Rode past there just after they had blocked off the road, wanted to know the details, knowing a couple of guys out east on bikes. Asked the police what bike it was, but she didn’t know. Talked to her about what happened, she was understandably vague. All I heard her say was that it could have been a yellow or blue bike, but she wasn’t at all certain, she was more certain that it was a "sports type" bike.

Sorry to hear, it’s close to home when anybody gets hurt, but when it happens on your neighborhood…

Condolences to the family, my thoughts are with you.

Just want to say, isn't weird how most of us have never met this fellow and all of a sudden it feels like you have lost an arm or a leg. The biking fraternity is so close that when a rider goes down for good, it hurts real bad and brings a tear to the eye. :(

You don't get this with a group of cagers. Empathy is deep amongst bikers and it's a good thing in this age of machoism.

Thanks for the phone call zapf...

I saw some bikes there (some naked vtwin I didn't know, and a black zx10, *I think* - I was in the middle of traffic, he/she was oncoming... def a big black sportsbike), but would have been about 1610... Coming back through there after visiting a client, at 1840 ish, all shut, and havoc in the area with cars all trying to get around the road. Did 60km for a normal 22km round trip.

A word, if I may
I suppose one could say
This constitutes
An attempt to pray

My sincere condolences to those he left behind - Rest in Peace Steve - In my heart I truly wish these things never happened to anyone. This happened about 300 metres from my home - police were still there around 8:30pm last night blocking Botany Road when I went out on my bike - I had hoped it was a burst water main, came back in from the ride and read this post last night - gave the wife and kids a big hug - deeply saddened - as someone already said, "There but for the grace of God...."

Always sad to hear and we all feel for his family. Keep us posted if anyone can confirm the details. Someone said he'd just done a wheelie? Makes us think about when and where we have our fun - too many risks to be casual in traffic. Can't judge him without knowing the facts of course but one must be on full alert in city traffic these days and even then we can be taken out as more than a few on here can testify! Condolences to those affected.

Given the wheelie thing, has anyone heard from Patch, he lives out that way?

I hope not, but having said that, I would hope it wasn't anyone. Take care peeps, want to ride with you all one day!

That Botany / Mill house intersection is a piece of work.

Yes, its one of the worst intersections for crashes around the area (and another one I frequent) so it wouldn't surprise me if someone crashing a red light was the actual cause. I wasn't working so don't know anything about the crash unfortunately.

Brett
23rd July 2006, 14:29
The whole area is fricken piss poor with cages running reds, sometimes lights that have been red for quite some time. It just doesn't pay to be quick off the lights anymore, and if you are going to, please check both ways first!!! Enough poor buggers killed on bikes, so sad to see.

I knew him and I'm not suprised. Youth+mean bike+no fear=Just a matter of time. Nobody that knew him is blaming anyone else. I also feel for the person/people in the car that he hit as it would be a life changing incident

I too use that junction everyday and even see buses running red lights on Botany Road. It's about time that they started putting cameras on the lights to stop this.
