View Full Version : Does riding at 70-80kph in a 50kph residential area impress you?

Well it doesn't impress me. So, to the guy on the Hornet who rides like that along Beach Rd, Harbour View Road and Te Atatu Road at about 8am every morning, you're riding does not impress anyone and when you finally lose control of your bike, fall off and put at risk the lives of MY kids who are walking along there at that time, you'd better hope that I'm nowhere near you.
It's riders like you that give all riders a bad name.
Rant over.

Don't worry about it mate, its unlikely that a bike will plough off the road and kill a pedestrian....you don't hear of it happening.
None of your business how he rides, he may be a far more capable rider than you! If you have a problem, call the cops.
If it was a Rav4 or something then I'd worry.

Lol, it's not that he normally winds me up, 'cause he does it every day, it's just when he chooses to intimidate me by riding close to my drivers side door and nearly clipping my car like he did this morning that it pisses me off. I am rarely in the cage but one of my kids was sick this morning so cage it was briefly.
His behaviour reflects poorly on all of us and I don't care how competent a rider he is.
Oh, and I have never been known to shirk from calling the cops about poor driving/riding. I ain't no saint, but when I want to go fast I choose the right time and place.

Ah, I see theres more to the story ;)
Drive into him with your cage next time, may as well give him something to moan about, cage drivers being crap etc. Just mention to him that you didn't see him as you were on the cellphone and drinking a Latte

Bingo! Anyone can ride fast, some can do it and be safe but when other elect to emperil me and mine - yes... expect me to get pissed off.
Tracks are good for going fast and competing - show how you you are, against other that want to do the same. Roads can be fun and if you're alone and the only one you put at risk (physical and financial) then go for it.

Keep the speed down when kids are around. I want to encourage parents to let their kids walk to school. To do this they have to have the perception that it is reasonably safe.
Right place, right time.
[Edit:] strange poll, i don't really ride under 50kph, but I do *normally* try to stay under 62kph-ish....

It does if they are on one wheel!!!!!!:blip:
Nah seriously I find it hard as hell to do 50, the ducati gearing is really tall, it will do it in second but it can get away on ya in about .5 of a sec.
In saying that I tend to keep to the speed limit in built up areas........mostly

Your right jill, Thats why you own a bike that can do 220km/hr, right?

No that'd be because anything only capable of 50 would get her killed on the Motorway, and anything capable of keeping her alive ion the motorway would fall foul of your argument.
What was your point again?
I voted yes cause I'm assuming you mean within the 10kph tolerance?
Put it this way, I try to ride in a manner that will keep me safe (from both accidents and taxes). My speed is just relative to that, with a margin occaisionally (and cautiously) added for the "enjoyment" factor.

Ya gotta remember that with these plastic rockets, you can't go under 70-80kmh at all, cos the weight on your wrists puts your hands to sleep and then your grip on the bars tends to get tighter and cos you can't feel your fingers you end up going even faster than you intended to in the first place.
I've heard that 110kmh is necessary most times as that is when the the wind blast becomes sufficient to take the weight of your wrists in order for the rider to maintain a safe cruising speed and also helps the ergonomics which boosts comfort levels considerably.
That's what I've heard, anyways??? :)
Considering the reckless speed this hoon was doing, there's a fair chance he originally started out at 50kmh and his hands went to sleep and when he passed you he was struggling to get some life back into his mawkers so as not to upset you, but found he was totally out of control. Poor bugger. Must have been real frightening for him. When he came up behind you, did you happen to notice how white his face was and big his eyes were??
I'll close the door on my way out okay? :)

Ooh, look, SpankMe has attached a poll to my thread.
I must admit that I try and ride at or under 60kph in a 50kph zone. Does that make me a hypocrit given my first post?
My concern is excessive/dangerous speed. But then, what is excessive or dangerous speed? Certainly a subjective call, but I do think that 50kph and for that matter 70kph zones are there for a reason - mainly built up areas where the risk of children, cars, dogs etc running out in front of you is higher - hence the reason I try and stay within 10 km of the posted speed in these areas.

I'll admit to doing 70-80 in a 50 when conditions are suitable (IE at night with no traffic around, let alone kids!), but speeding when kids are on the road near youa nd could run out is just daft..

I'm a bit confused about the 10kmh tolerance? I thought it was 10% tolerance (coz the speedometer manufacturers will only guarantee their their products to within +/- 10% accuracy) which is only 5kmh in a 50 zone.
Personally I try to keep it within this 10% but will move with the traffic for safety - have found myself very uncomfortable on the way to work with an L plate on in an 80 zone. Th traffic all around me are doing 95kmh so the choice is obey the law, do 70 kmh and end up a greasy smear under a Truck/white van or risk the $400 and 25 demerit points of going with the flow. I think I will recover from the fine and the points so unfortunately I do break the law sometimes. I've got 2 kids myself though and I would never speed outside a school.

I find that a comfortable speed through Clyde is 56 kmh in 3rd gear. Where the streets are narrow or busy then I go quite a bit slower. Basically its ride to the conditions, but I would seldom hoon it in a built up area.

I cant say i try and ride under 50 in a 50 zone ALL the time, if its busy or lots of pedestrians then yes, but otherwise more like 55 but keep it under 60.

I try and stay around the 50k mark as I remember seeing people speeding through my suburb and I know the people there that could get hurt. So I believe it is a respect situation! You respect their home suburb and friend as you which your home to be treated!

im the same...ride usually just over 50, and HAVE known to get to 70k....but usually only for a few seconds and before school lets out. if im going the route that takes me right outside a primary school, im the opposite and closer to 40k.
if theres kids around, ill keep the speed down, simply cos ive the buggers pretend to run out in front of me before [and i pretended to run him over in return] if its on a busy road though, ill keep my speed down and certainly dont overtake... only time ive overtaken in town was when i had a crawler in front of me. but i try and find an alterante route that will get me off their tail.

just ride to the conditions...i keep up with traffic, usually about 90k in a 10 zone, and still have cars up my exhaust.

How do you know he's doing 70 -80 k's?
When I'm doing, say, 59 km/h on an accurate speedo I'm passing everything around, because the law-abiding people are probably doing 45 k's.

I read the title of the thread and assumed the poll was the same. However it turns out its actually the opposite and I have inadvertiantly answered the poll with the wrong answer. I tend to disappear into the backroads/wops to find twisties and places where I can run amuck. However residential areas offer too many dangers not only to myself but everyone in the area. Not to mention how friggin stupid it is to speed in 50kph areas...

I tend to stick to the speed of the traffic around me. If there's no traffic I just do what feels appropriate to the conditions/location Tonight on the way home where traffic wasn't an issue I did some of it at 50kph, a couple of wee bursts up to 70kph but generally just on 60kph.

Must be a lawyer, and I ride a cruiser so it sounds cool at 50kph. The open road is a slightly different story so maybe they should do a pole on that next. I guess I have kids so I stick to 50 in town.

time and place...
i live opposite a school, there are certain times and places in the neighbourhood that i will stick to or close to the speed limit (about 61kmh) but otherwise dont worry about it.
I know *all* the places where kids could possibly magically appear from and so its around there that i keep it sensible.
** being that both sides of the road are 99% clear for atleast 2-3m back from the road in the built up area

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't that stoooooopid advertisement say "drive to the conditions, when they change REDUCE your speed"
As we all know, that would eventually result in a pack of parked cages and bikes all over our roads. It annoys me every time the stinking ad comes on.
