Gonna take a short ride out to piha if the weather is looking good in the morning. Probably depart westgate at 10am, go down to lincoln road on the m/way then across to the start of Scenic Drive, Swanson/Ranui end.
Pace will be 'medium', i'll only be stopping at the turn off to piha, at piha for lunch, and again at where piha road joins scenic drive again for the finish to titirangi end.

good stuff bug-man! as i said the pace wont be too hot, partly because of me being a twit and introducing myself to the northland bush on the weekend, so could possibly be a good ride for the 250's to come along on if they want to.

yeah, the 'guest' isn't real nippy on the corners, gotta get used to that!
*must pull finger out and fix it!*

came up too hot behind another rider, thought they were holding speed but they braked and i went wide, locked the back and didnt let it go :nono: so had no real directional control cept for straight ahead which involved a 1m drop and bushes... as i said no damage and glad to say i thoroughly enjoyed the experience!!!

Firstly: Migh try and make it if im not getting pissed for a mates bday! And if i do it will sadly be on the straightlining only 750turbo, but what the hell, i havnt ridden in ages!
But SEcondly and more importantly? Do R6's have rear brakes?! Gareth dude u shoulda dropped that style before you moved off 250's. fuck the rear brake its what sends people into trouble i reckon! Unless its a 5meter long 1tonne piece of crap like my turbo, or the likes, that will lock the front wheel as quick as the front, thats the only time i reckon its all hands/feet on pedals!

Hadnt been using it much/at all during the day, just a tad here and there to help add a little to the front braking i had been doing if needing it. I think it was an old reaction thinking 'fuck i'll just stop' instead of brake harder and lean more. At the end of the day it was the fact that i was too close to the man in front - if it was the track i wouldve just gone around him but didnt like my chances on a blind corner on a road i hadnt ridden before.

Ok this is just a question not trying to be a downer on your ride ..... BUT out of all the roads out west why on earth ride scenic dr, on the weekends (esp if its a fine one) there's SHIT loads of cars on it?????

26th July 2006, 18:32
nah, only in the summer.
Only thing to bear in mind out that way is cos of the crappy weather, the middle of the road will be slippy with moss and crap.
But it'll be pretty dead..

Another thing to be cautious of is there's a fair bit of gravel between the car tracks on scenic drive from the titirangi end to near the piha turn off to (well there was a few weeks ago last time I rode it and it had been that way for ages, so I doubt it'll be any different now).
I reckon there's more interesting ways to get to scenic drive from westgate than going through henderson.
If you head down Don Buck rd past the roundabout and turn right into Red Hills rd, then second left into Sunnyvale rd you get a few more twisties and not so many 50k residential roads. You could either go left into Kay rd and join Scenic Drive North or continue along McEntee rd and go along Bethells rd and Te Henga rd (which can be a fun little detour) to join scenic drive a little further down.
Anyway, just a suggestion.

I'll be there. Where exactly do we meet at Westgate?
I hear the warning about the gravel, I destroyed a 9R on the second corner from the top on Forest Hill Rd :bye: (unmarked road works:angry: ). Corners shouldn't be too damp with the good weather over the past week tho'.

Meet up at the shell station. We normally congregate towards the exit by that is closest to the roundabout/kfc opposite the pay phone after we have filled up with gas. If you are there before 10.30 you'll see a group of bikes and likeliness is it will be us

Has anyone cruised over the route recently??...would be great to get some feedback as a warning of what to look out for and where. Particularly with ruts or any patchwork.

ok, can't make it :weep:
brake lights still playing up, which means no CoF, which means no legal ride..
So Classic Zed has offered to have a look in the morning, so I'll be heading north (the longer way, cos it's safer Mr Officer..)
Have fun guys

oh and we'll be taking the route that erik suggested, looks a tad more interesting than the lincoln road - swanson way.

haha, yeh man was a good little ride. I even impressed myself with my low speed wheelies and semi-decent stoppies in the carpark too!

was a very nice road to ride over....plenty of wet patches with moss and gravel in places made sure that the pace was kept to a cruise. There were some pretty nice corners with a decent surface though, I didnt know roads like this existed this close to auckland!!!
Cheers Gareth...nice effort with the spit shine and elbow grease.
