Did anyone else hear The Rock radio station this morning?
I was a little concerned about Leah Panapa's comment that "she gets annoyed when bikes filter to the front of the queue - and she would like to open her car door on us" (or words to that same effect).
OK, that is her opinion, but I would have liked to have seen a decent response from "Alistair" who aparently is part owner of Colemans Suzuki!!!
A darned good promotion of bikes in general, but let down by a comment like that...

I quite like Leah and her sense of humour. A darned good DJ really! Just provoking cagers to start doing those types of things.
Leah is thinking about buying a bike (scooter) and getting into riding as well.

Its funny before I started riding I too used to get annoyed with bike filtering and lane splitting etc. And when a bike used to go zooming past I would always shake my head and think that it was sooo dangerous. If I didnt ride now I would probably still think the same. When people get out on the roads in NZ it always seems to be a race, so when bikes filter to the front others will get offended cause they cant! Dont know why people have this "race" or must get there first mentality its not like you actually even know where the other person is going...

Well opening your car door and injurying someone is a chargable offence, plus a door is going to get fucked opening on 300 kg of bike and rider, but the clincher is cage drivers seldom see me when I am splitting so how would they know when to open their door?

For good reasons I don't listen to The Rock.
The above banal comment is right up there with the reasons.

Not everyone does get it (which is the problem), so they'll take her seriously

Yeah?? That's funny, I try to make sure they see me.
Between a combination of exhaust noise, headlights, my road position and lining up with their line of sight in their mirrors. If I'm not sure they've seen me, or if I think they aren't settled in their lane, they'll get a couple of blips from the throttle. That seems to signal intent pretty clearly. And if a driver does see me and change lanes before I come up on them, then no big loss, they are the ones stuck in traffic, not me.

If they were going to start targeting bikes lane splitting at least they might discover what the side mirrors are for and start using them :blip:

I have always moved aside to help give bikes room, and the only problem I ever had with bikes going to the front of the que was that I wished it was me, i would think "lucky bastards!" Had a Harley or 2 sneek up on me and give me a hell of a fright as they flew past but never been a concern. It is only jealousy that makes people say things like that.

Never listen to the rock because of the 2 brain cells shared by the dj's. And the same bloody songs day in, day out. Oh, wait... play us another ad...

What made me laugh about the whole thing was the number of callers who were going to get on a bike to save money of fuel. Well they will, but I figure they are going to end up pooring their money somewhere else.

Didn't something similar happen in the US recently? The DJ made some inflammatory anti-bike remarks, and several days later was forced to apologise and carry out some sort of penance after a co-ordinated letter/e-mail campaign by bikers in the US.
Perhaps 5,000 e-mails to whatever their addy is might make her shut the fuck up?

clarkson made a worse crack in the Uk, about stringing a wire across the road outside his house to take bikers out, I guess you are gonna get the mindless minority takin it seriously, but what happened to any publicity is good publicity?.
The piece on bikin on the rock was mostly pro bikin and that's gotta be a good thing ain't it?!

It's all about point-of-view, isn't it? I remember getting annoyed before I got into biking...I think it's just a natural reaction for Auckland drivers because so many cages try to get to the front of the queue that they can't help but pass their feelings on to bikes too.
There's just something about it that makes people annoyed. I don't think there's any way to get around it without making cars illegal.
Now there's an idea.

Thing is that 'filtering' to the front of the queue at the lights is 100% legal as long as you are between two lanes heading in the same direction.
If someone opened their door on me I would soon be finding out just how well Quasi's 'rage' streetfighter gloves go through glass windows or alternately through side view mirrors.

I think I'm more scared of someone half-opening their door and me going into it. A head-on with a window pane doesn't strike me as nearly so terrifying as a head-on with the corner of a door. Just the thought of it gives me the willies.

More cager prejudice, just what we need. I wish public figures like radio DJ's would watch what they say on air. Some people ie the lunatic fringe could take her comments to heart.

I have had a very nice email back from Leah.
Yes the comment was made "tongue-in-cheek", and she hopes that drivers do not take her seriously over it.
I think the Colemans representative should have nipped the issue in the bud, by saying something at the time. In fact ANYTHING, not just sales talk... thats SARGE's job anyway!!!:nya:
