View Full Version : Dropped!

Hi all. I had my first drop today. Was going around the roundabout at the bottom of Astley ave, was a fair bit leaned over i guess, and I suddenly lost grip on the front tyre, probably because of oil or something. Long story short I lowsided and found myself on my ass. The bike and me are mostly alright.
Anyway, I was wondering about this after. I just got my bike about 2 months ago, and I already had my first drop. I've heard people say that everyone drops their first bike.
So, do you reckon it's better to have dropped and walked away, or never to have dropped at all?
I think I've learned from the fall, and it wasn't too bad, other than fixing those scratches on the cibby so I'm looking at it as (kind of) a good thing.

as long as you learn from every mistake, you should be fine.

Best thing that ever happened to me as a rider was having an off.
Gave me a reality check I will never forget.
So in my opinion be grateful that you've got your first out of the way and that you and your machine are relatively unscathed....but hey,it still sucks eh mate!

I've been riding for 3 months and have had 2 drops so far. First one coz of a bad driver that didn't understand the give way rule. second one for trying to go round a corner in the middle of a rain storm. Important thing here is get back on ASAP otherwise you could lose confidence from being off the bike too long. I wish I hadn't dropped my bike but shit happens and it's not damaged as both accidents were in slow moving traffic.
If you can show me someone who never made a mistake I'll show you someone who never learned anything.

It took me a while to have my first bin, only a month ago actually, but yeah, learn from the mistake, as with me, too fast into sunstrike...missed the corner all together :). Learn and move on, and remember that you do not always get away so lucky, rather learn on a crash that didn't hurt too much than one that leaves you with months of rehab!

Same, was my 4th bike, after years of riding (and a 10 year break), and was only 2 weeks ago, on my first KB ride.
It sucked!
But like you, un hurt, bike relatively unscathed (you need to look hard to see the damage, but it is there, my poor baby!).
So, hopefully, you learn, and ride on. I learnt, unfortunately I already knew the leason, but for some reason thought physics and a truck could not compete with me and my bike....WRONG!

Ive been riding for almost 2 months...dropped mine on the weekend for the first time.
Was i hit by some idiot in a cage??
Was i getting the knee down whilst doing 100km/hr round a 35k bend??!!
Or was I 2 wheel drifting in torrential rain?!?!?!!!!
NO!!!
I dropped the bike in a bloody service station after not putting down the stand properly.:doobey:
Only damage was a couple of cracks on the opposite side of a fibreglass reinforcing job i did the previous weekend....ah well...some people are born to fibreglass i guess

I did exactly the same thing on saturday. Was pretty pissed at myself. But no use crying over spilt milk. Broke the screen and top fairing.

I binned the SV I used to have,
Too much gas, too soon exiting a corner whilst still cranked over.
Back end slid out sending me and the bike sliding along the tarmac for a while.
Lesson learnt
Respect the throttle and use it wisely.....roll on, roll off.

yea must say i was pretty dark at the time.
My screen emerged unscathed with the front fairing cracking around the left indicator. The rear fairing under the seat has a nasty crack that'll need teding to soon though...fairing is under a fair bit of tension which is opening up the crack.

One of the joys of being on a 250 is that you can open her up midway through a corner and she doesnt bite...unless you have grease on your tyre from excess grease spraying off chain....hmmm...another lesson that was learnt on another day.

The worst thing is when you do it to someone elses bike, worth twice as much as your own:doh: witch happend to me on saturday as well.
but crashing isn't that bad, yea its a bummer, but all the best come off some time. i came off on a roundabout as well doing the same thing leaning it to much, now i take the out side lane, because their is aways heaps of oil and deseil at roundabouts, commen place for binning.:innocent: :oi-grr:

Yeah, have dropped my bikes a few times. If you don't drop it you are both a nana, and very lucky. Also note my signature, if you ever get any bad drops, give me first dibs to look at it. Will pay more than any wrecker for damaged bikes.

First time I dropped mine was trying to do drifts on the lawn, ummmm grass was a good place to drop it tho.
I also gently placed it on the road doing a slow speed u turn.
Had a few close calls with tyres sliding out but thats all fun - not at any serious speeds. Front tyre going definitely gave me a fright tho

Mate if that roundabout is by Long Bay college then theres enough rubber on the road for a Moto GP bike to fly around it. Just watch out for the kids:nono:

I dropped my street magic once outside uni with a big crowd around. Got the leg of my pants hooked around the little plate on the inside of the footpeg.. went to put my leg out when I stopped at the lights but was on my side before I could do anything about it! piss.

yea had the front tyre drifting round a high speed corner before...it was when the tyres were cold and was quite gradual so i was able to back off without dramas.

Lol so many lessons to learn eh. At least we all don't have to crash to learn each one. We'll learn off each other too!
But like somebody said on this thread (I forgot who) it really is best to get back on quick. There was a nagging fear when I got on (like 5 mins after the crash). But that left once I got my rhythm back

awesome
My folks didn't think so....
Thing was they were both slow speed (first about 50km/h second about 25-30) and was a bit of my fault a bit of the bikes (really shitty tyres they did not hold... new tyres sorted it out and made it heaps better to ride) but I was riding the next day / later the same day.
It phases some people when they have an off, I tend to just be pissed off (mainly at myself), fix the bike up and get on with it.......... Oh and try throwing a bike up a driveway... yes up ... that was the third drop and man I was almost crying before I hit the ground at the thought of my bike getting all scratched up.... again.

I don't feel half as bad as I did about dropping my bike twice in 3 months after reading everyone elses input. There's me riding round Auckland in scuffed boots and leathers thinking 'All the other bikers will be looking at the scratches and thinking Wot a Twat - he fell off' but in reality loads of other peeps have had slow speed spills.
Bling to the guy that started this.

I have a habit of dropping bikes... I wrote off my first bike in the first 2 months I started riding and I probably couldnt count how many times I have dropped the KR. The most embarrasing time was when I forgot I had my disc lock on, it was just after 3.30 and all the high school kids were right across the road waiting for buses, there were people everywhere and it made quite a loud bang so everyone saw me. :o
Just went on the scenic drive ride with the KB crew. I was leading Buddy L and Rookie back to Westgate...long story short...the front wheel went from underneath me at about 30k's trying to turn into Waitakere Rd from Scenic Dr and I ended up having a nice body surf over the tarmac.
I was fine. Good thing i just got some amoured pants last week, but now i've put a hole in them  ...at least it wasn't a hole in my knee-cap!
Fairing has a few cracks on it (not too bad now that i've put it back into place). I also managed to warp the front disc brakes or something some how. Other than that everything is fine.
Not a bad first 'off'. Kind off fun not that i want to do it again. :innocent:
Cheers to Buddy L and Rookie for the helping me out :niceone:

you're a true champion for brushing yourself off and getting back on so quickly:rockon: . Everything that we didnt fix this afternoon should be fixable without too much cost.

yea have to admit, the tarmac body surfing looked so dam natural

Just read this thread,
Thought i was doing all right, coming up to 6 months of riding and i thought i was doing alright then hit by a 4x4. Learnt heaps like 4x4 are pretty solid and we are only squishy. It happens to us all, sometimes your lucky with only a minor one.
