Haven't been to KB in a long time.
I'm not a mechanically minded person and I have only had my bike for about 6 months. It’s been sitting in the garage most of that time as I was given a company car (free diesel + free use = WIN)
So here I am a computer geek with a bike that I love to ride once in a blue moon…
I took it for a ride the other day and when in gear it made a whining noise. It’s hard to describe, like a mechanical whine and when I pulled the clutch in it would go away but only after a few seconds… Also it wasn’t in all gears all the time…
Any help?

5000-7000Ks can't think off the top my head but its around there.
It's a 2004 model.
I think it's loud. Didn't use to make the noise.

Is it a whirring, tapping kind of noise? Or is it just kind of "squeaky"?

I would say its more of a whirring than a tap.

Lube your chain
BINGO!
If it was tapping as well I would have said check your oil, those things literally eat oil! But yeah, lube your chain...

Thanks for the quick help. You people are a lot more helpful than some of the other forums I visit. :)
Oil is fine, was the first thing I checked.
What do I lube the chain with?

Chain lube preferably. Should only be $15 or so from a bike shop.....
Oh, and do NOT put it on the centre stand and put it in gear so that you can apply easily. That's a great way to lose fingers... Just turn the wheel by hand, apply lube to the chain and wipe off.....

Heheh should have thought about that :P
So centre stand it then just cover the whole chain and wipe off excess?
Sorry, I like to make sure I understand things, making me sound stupid :)

As easy as that... Has it been in for a service? (As it is a new bike and needs one in the very first few 1000's!!!)

It hasn't had a service since I got it in December. I plan to take it in on Saturday. Can the chain lube be bought from Supercheap or Repco?

No problem!!! Just get your bike to that service... (I think it's been due for a few 1000km's)

What he said, if you treat those engines well they keep going forever. If you dont they will fall apart fast, check with your service guy for an appropriate timetable for your bike to be serviced.... then follow it.
Good luck

Welcome to KB... Make sure there are sufficient oil in the motor and the correct type. Synthetic oils are very good as specially on start up and cold times. But they are a bit on the expensive side...

Good news. The noise wasn't coming from the bike. It was the rev counter... It's at the garage now for a service...
