View Full Version : Bullied by another Biker (coz of my L plate?)

Last Wednesday I was riding home from Work along the Great South Road - so far so good. Now picture this - I'm in the inside lane and have a long row of traffic cones to my left coz they're doing roadworks on the section before you get to Blue Wing Honda and I can see this guy on an off road motorbike riding right up my ass to my left as if he's going to pass me on the inside - I hold my position to see what he does - he closes the gap so his right handlebar is nearly touching my back - now all this time there is loads of space on my right but it's as if he's trying to bully me - so I own the space and move to my left to shut this move down and the guy drops back, overtakes properly and then takes the next right turn (so he should have been in the right hand lane all along!). WTF was that all about?
Please respect L plated riders - it's bad enough worrying about cages without other bikes trying to show you how much of a wanker they've become. And remember that not all learners are teenagers that think this sort of shit is cool - some of us old farts will bite back.

thats just not cool...an advantage of having a 2 smoker which smokes more than a regular 2 smoker should is that when boy racers or anyone else for that matter tries to bully you on the road i just pull in the clutch and blow the muffler out in their face...after a week of mostly low revs and idleing in town there's plenty of oil built up to mislead others that my bike has a built in smoke screen function for secret spy missions....or something of the like
i don't ride with my L plate anymore for that reason though because people just think it's funny to bully learners:eyeroll: the police haven't pulled me up yet and i don't think they'l kick much of a fuss if they did

You did the right thing. I gotta say, it's probably just an Auckland thing though...

probably because you're welsh.

Are you sure he was "next" to you. Many riders will ride "in your mirrors" so you know where they are all the time. If you sit in the right hand side of the lane they will be in your left hand mirror, and vise versa.

A bit of topic but...
Wish I could say that worked for me... My bike tends to go quite "gluggy" when its idling so when Im sitting at the lights I have to give it a few handfuls of revs. I had filtered up to the front of the lights just the other day and was sitting there revving it a wee bit when the boy racers behind me started revving their POS boy racer car up to. I didnt think anything of it until I went to take of and these twats came racing up to me and then cut right in front of me without indicating so I blast my air horn and they start beebing their horn and I realised that they were just trying to harrass me so I just let them go. Got to the next set of lights and filtered straight passed them through the long que to the front cause I was really worried that they were gonna do something dumb. Im on a restricted licence so no L plate, they may have been worse if I had had one on though... Bet they would've felt stoopid if they knew I was a chick, lol!

Nothing to do with the L plate. He's just a dipshit.

Absolutely - I could see the guy out of the corner of my eye without the aid of the mirror. The road was empty around us at the time - 2 lanes available - for reasons best known to himself he chose to ride at my left shoulder. Just hoped he might be a KBer and could explain his reasons to me over a pint.:apint:

Yeah I agree that it's hard enough while you're learning to ride to concentrate and watch out for everything that's going on around you let alone some dip stick rider who "thinks" he's better than you to hassle you while your learning....HELLO there's a reason the 'L' plate is there. What a dumb ass
Be good if he could explain his actions here...

I can see this guy on an off road motorbike :
Thats twice now I have seen it for myself (now read it) that an off road
motorcyclists has attempted the left hand overtake manouver ??? Do they
forget they are on the road or something
Off roaders sit higher up than the rest of us motorcyclists......does that have
summit to do with it perhaps..........*ego*

I don't think the type of bike he had anything to do with the riders bad attitude in this instance - I know at least 2 guys who commute on dirt bikes through Auckland and they're top blokes. Nah - I think ManDownUnder has put it succinctly as always - end of story. I do feel better for having shared this. Cheers to all.

i had one do that too once, filtered through on the left of them at the lights, while waiting i hit reserve tank so i swapped over and revved it a couple of times, they thought i was challenging them? :whocares: anyway light goes green, car guns it.... (i hadnt even started to pull away)
my right footpeg was lined up with the side of his car, left a nice long scrape  :D
seems strange for a biker to behave like that to another... then again maybe he was just a cage driver using a mates bike...

He/she may have just been trying to ride in close formation with you, I have noticed that some riders do this for the hell of it. 2 bikes are easier to see than 1 kind of idea. Maybe an interesting 'brotherhood' thing Im not sure.
Normally this isn't something I like to do with riders I'm not familiar with.

hmmm yeh sounds a bit wierd. Only time I come up on the left hand side of a biker is it they are in the right lane and i'm splitting and they aren't.:scooter:
But if there were 2 lanes free just sounds like someone who hadn't taken thier meds that morning.

when i come up on another biker, i usually try to get into staggered formation. i let them chose their spot and ride diagonal to them, but never close enough to cause the lead bike to panic like the dirt rider in question appears to have done. same for if im lead bike, i will ride closest to the centre line and hope the others behind me stagger themselves. i check in my mirrors, and if someone is right behind me, ill indicate and move to the left [if theres room]
i dont do it so much for brotherhood, but more for safety. plus, if i was glued right behind, im wouldnt be able to see ahead, and hate having my vision blocked like that. with group rides, i hate having someone right up my exhaust, and thats what always happens.

Must admit ... i've had the same thing a couple of times with off-road riders ... either blasting by too close or just being stupid .. i've found people who ride sports bikes to be great tho ... i've been given the thumbs up far to many times to count as they fly by at god knows what speed. ha ha

[QUOTE=Big McJim] it's as if he's trying to bully me [-QUOTE]
Unfortunately it probably is your L-plate. Sometimes I used to take my wife’s FXR150 :scooter: (complete with L-plate) for rides or to get serviced etc. I definitely got treated differently than when I was on my Ducati. With a big bike you seem to be able to ride any way you like and be treated with at least a little respect. On a little bike with L-pates if you ride like you are on a mission to die and have a black tinted visor people at least stay back.
Personally I always ride like a nana and try and forget tossers as soon as they have gone by.:whocares:
PS I still love to ride an FXR150 soooo much fun... They corner like a house fly:blip:

Yipes! Thanks for sharing that experience. You kept your cool and managed the situation well - I hope I can do as well, if something like that happens to me!
Keep riding and keep learning safely!

Thanks - yeah, my wife has just got her learners but finds the VTR a bit heavy for her. I'm saving up to get her an FXR150 - will be like being back on my mountain bike again!

Don't worry about it too much - it really was a one off incident for me - I had just hoped the other rider was on KB and could explain what they were trying to do - maybe it was something innocent as has been suggested but I couldn't fathom it out at the time...nor on reflection yet.....
