Just curious, has anyone here owned one of these?. I sort of saw them as the bridge between the old school FZR thou's, and the R1. I rode one to Tauranga and back, and absolutley LOVED the damn thing, it had some serious stonk, and went round corners pretty tidily. I would love to find one.

I haven't seen one on the road for donkeys. The name was a bit gimmicky, the ThunderCat was even worse, but this bike bought me much pleasure.

There was one for sale down here not so long ago. They use the FZR1000 engine with the internals reworked to give more midrange. Not sure, but I think they had a 6 speed box rather than the FZR1000's 5 speed. I guess they became a bit of an orphan cause Yamaha made it obselete (in Sports bike terms) with the R1

They used the same frame, engine etc as the previous YZF's but with different fairings. They were restyled so the marketing department could tug off by using a cool name and look. Very good bikes though.

Had one of these before the R1, great bike however found once I had bought it they had a tendency to chew through oil, there is a site in the UK dedictated to them http://www.thunderace.partbikes.co.uk/ace/index.php and thats where I found out about the oil. If your still wanting one I was in New Plymouth about a week ago and there is one for sale at New Plymouth Motorcycles, looked pretty tidy.

I think the owners hang onto their Thunderarses. A comtemporary to the RF, but not many seemed to come this way.

I remember a lot of them in the UK and thundercats as well, they got left for dead by the R1 and R6 when they came out, then effectively went on to become the original fazer 600 and 1000, which are now DEAD due to eu engine emission. So a solid enough bike that will commute and tour well, but probably not for the track.

No kidding there. Mine is currently using 1 litre of oil per track day!!!! Yeah, it's time to get something done about that eh.

Umm........thats why I sold it..............

(actually wish I hadn't, now, but......)

Performance bikes did a set up session on a T/ace and found it could be hustled around the track as quickly as an (original) R1, if set up right. Another very underrated road bike.Know a couple of people who have them and they call them their "do anything" bikes.

Not sure whether this is a different Thunderace for sale at Phil Turnbulls, but appears to still be for sale: http://www.motorcycletrader.co.nz/DesktopDefault.aspx?UsedBikeID=1558605&TabID=3553&Alias=motorcycletradernz

Well you're definitely not getting it back :nya:

Especially as I'm about to take up a new position at a bike shop!!!! The old girl isn't going to be using that much oil for much longer.

The Thundercat is the baby on right?, well I know of two Thunderace'i (1000cc) and one of the guys was thinking about selling a few weeks back but has since changed his mind... I'm sure if you offered he'd reconsider.

He was thinking around the 4 - 5k mark, has high kms but it run nice.

PM me if your interested and I'll send you his email.

The old girl deserves a good freshen up!

Surprisingly, the ZX9R feels very similar to Barby in her prime, with just a bit more mid range and lots more top end. Similar general "feel" and a tad lighter. The Akropovich system sounds the same, as well.
