View Full Version : Canterbury: 27th August Off-road ride

OK folks that like to ride and get dirty.
It seems that the 27th August is a good day for a ride.
So where would you guys like to go?
Do do the river again? North or South?
Both, that is if we pull the lead out.
Edit 15-8-06 This is the ride we are going to do.
I think we should do the North and stop in at Oxford or Cust for a coffee, that is if time permits.
And could go down the Eyre River most of the way home.
And are meeting across the road from the boat ramp on the North side under the motor way bridge at 10:00 O'clock.

My suggestions are ...
South & North Waimak
or
North Waimak and Eyre River
or
Ashley River
or
Selwyn River
or
Rakaia River
I haven't played in the Selwyn or Rakaia before, so I don't know what we'd find there, but I'm keen to cure the curiosity sometime.
Other areas I'd like to check out for day rides when the longer daylight hours return are ...
South side of Banks Peninsula between Birdlings Flat and French Farm
and
Waipara River and the surrounding area

Why don't you guys go over Rakia? Not sure about the area. As I've only been 4x4ing out that way. But I remember at the time thinking that it would be fun doing on a bike.
Looking forward to being able to join in the fun after October.
Make sure there's lots of pics.

Done the Waipra on four wheels. It would be a high speed blat - dont think there is much "technical" stuff like the south of the waimak. Also have to watch the river levels as was a little deep (bonnet) last time I went through.
Selwyn is a little different in that Coes Ford up to the next road is soft gravel with clean water crossings (knee deep) then up to about 5km upstream from the main road bridge is fast loose grave with a few banks then back to water crossings up to the Bealy Road fords. Also have to watch the river level - did this about couple of months ago and river had started to come up and found a couple of crossings that were top of engine deep up near the Bealy fords.
Worst thing about both these ones is that there is a long ride home when you've got wet boots and pants.
Whilst I like the motorbike tracks (alot) I'm keen to actually beable to take the time to look around ie slight more open track. North side of Waimak up to Oxford and then back down Eyre is sounding good but really dont care what we do.
At home I've made a bit of a list of potential trips I'd like to have a got at some time but they are longer summer trips though - like circumnavigating Mt Hutt on the gravel roads then into the Ashburton lakes where there are some tracks. Will bring some maps next trips to show you all.
Cheers

Also have to watch the river levels as was a little deep (bonnet) last time I went through. I've had a wee surprise like that before in the Waipara River. Spent an hour or so extracting a landrover from an unexpectedly deep bit at 2am one night :eek5: The river was flowing through the vehical while we were doing this, so was thoroughly soaked by the time we got it out. It was like sitting in a sauna with the heater on, on the drive home. I've only played in this area in a landrover at night, hence I'm curious to see it in daylight on a bike. It was a mates vehical - he was having fun doing all the driving, I was having fun standing up in the sunroof shooting the bunnies :blip:

Mt Hutt and Ashburton lakes sound good.
I reckon we should all come up with a couple of areas that we want to have look at. That should give us a bunch of places to explore over the coming Spring, Summer and we'll all get to see the areas we've been curious about with the confidence of being part of a group. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm keener to venture further off the beaten track when there's someone around to assist if get in the shit. I'm also keen to do an overnighter somewhere too - not stay in a cabin, but take everything with me and camp in the middle of nowhere.

The heater actually worked in the Landy? Only one of mine that the heater has worked is the ex military V8 - mind you with the amount of petrol it drank you'd expect it to produce a just a little bit of heat.

I'm hearing you with this one. Righty-O peeps, homework for this month is to come up with some places to go riding during spring and summer.
The overnighter sounds like a good idea as well. Thinking of digging the treadly panniers out and modifying them to work on the motorbike - only used them once so might be worth a shot. Damn now I need my welder and tools back  I need my shed! Its been almost a year and I'm getting serious withdrawal.

I am keen to go play anywhere, have only been in Christchurch for a few months so dont really know where to go yet! I have a bike trailer for those that dont want to ride too far and take the easy option out for getting a bit further afield.....
Has anyone tried up Ohau way? I have been tramping up there a few times, and there is some pretty awesome open country.
I am in the process of sorting out my garage at the moment, but I have a welder (small home ARC welder) and a few other bits and pieces if you need a hand!

Sounds good to me and plan some longer rides when the days are longer and warmer.

I'd rather ride thanks all the same. Mind you, they're OK if you're going to an event which is just a loop ride.

Love to ride up to Reefton and in to some of the stuff there too. (although once there some of it is more CRF suitable again.

Done the big river track in a 4x4. Always wanted to do Napolen Hill track (has the infamous natural tunnels with the stream flowing through). Also know of the Waitahu track which could be fun. These are all from the Ken Sibly 4x4 book so reasonable guides if you need that sort of thing. All of these are old mining roads though so as for single track - I know nothing.
There are other tracks such as the New Creek to Densiton (done), the tv transmitter near Greymouth and lake Hochsetter (done) but again are gravel roads and wasnt looking for single track. Suppose to be some reasonable riding on Deniston if you know where to look and the weather is OK.
This is exactly why I want the DR650 - to go places like this and then do the tracks. O well only two months and two weeks exactly till the F licence test.

The DAS guys take you to Napolen Hill on the second day of their trip. Day one goes in to the Big River Mine by dirt road and some quite steep (not Transalp friendly), but possibly still constdered 4x4 track.
I reckon we should get together and do one of their tours. Need about 5 of us to start i think but will take about 10 or 11 if it grows. at 11 they start running out of beds.
We could proberbly find our way around on the easy stuff, but there is no way i could remember my way around in there enough to be a guide the CRF suitable areas, even after two trips.

Doubt you did the ken sibly 4x4 track into Big River then. It is pretty flat and boaring. It is the road they took a 4x4 3 ton truck in and out when they did up the mine head etc.
Kinda interested but I'm happy in a tent - last time I stayed in Reffton whilst doing bridge inspections, the pubs rooms were so cold the inside of the windows were frozen. I think my tent and down sleeping bag would be nicer!

I was quite gutted not to meet Phil on Saturday. Went down to sort them out for the prepurchase they did for me. Meet up with Nigel (soon-to-be former CRM owner) there to give him some dollars, as he was getting some knobblier tyres put on his new Dakar.
Nigel went on one of Phil's rides yesterday.
I have a feeling DAS is going to become my second home, certainly until I get some tools together.

I assume Nigel is the guy you bought your bike off, and not the nigelp who's already on here. In which case, what's he doing with the Dakar? As he's fitting knobblier tyres I guess he wants to get off the track a bit - is he interested in coming along on some rides?

No it's not NigelP. Nigel Flyer is his name, older ex-Pom. Very nice guy. Has a few different machines. Think he also has/had an old 70's Z on trademe as well. Always a shame when you have to get rid of old bikes to get new ones. Then again, if he hadn't needed to, I wouldn't be getting my hands on my new baby.
He bought the Dakar as his wife is getting rid of her bike and just wants to pillion. So needed something comfy that could still handle the off-beaten-trail.
As for DAS. Although I've only got a pre purchase from them (so far). At $30 for the incredibly thorough job Phil did (compression test, ride test, found the only thing wrong was ONE spoke was coming loose - think how closely do you have to be going over the bike with a fine tooth comb in order to spot that), etc. I'd rate there value for money as 10/10.
Nigel was obviously also impressed with their service. Hense him taking his new bike straight there. I have briefly mentioned KB to him. Will tell him again when he drops the bike off later this week.

Or fix your bike.

It should be fine as it is normally dry, with just bits of water here and there.
I have only once in the last year or two I have seen fast flowing water.
And we got though quick just in case it was going to flood.:gob:
There is plenty of islands so we should be able to ride down the river.
As you know there are plenty of fords to escape the river bed if it does start to flood.

Oops, you just want to much info.:innocent:
Seriously we talked about it and I forgot to post the info, sorry PLUG.
We are going for a ride up the Waimak river on Sunday the 27/8/06 and are meeting across the road from the boat ramp on the North side under the motor way bridge at 10:00 O'clock.
That is unless the weather is real crappie.
We are going to ride the tracks along the river and there is a softer route, which is the road and the stock bank that runs by the river.
We will be riding mainly between the river and the stock bank and or road.
Through the mud and ruts and the trees.
Some of the tracks are easy and tight and some are open and flowing.
The same basic tracks as last time.
But because we are going further, we maybe doing more open tracks and less and shorter stops. (play it by ear)

I can chuck on a different rear sprocket if need beI’ve attached a map for you with the approximate route we’ll be taking marked on it, this could vary depending on who turns up, where they’re comfortable with riding, and the condition of the various tracks at the time. You’re looking at around 55km of shingle road, river bed and single track up the Waimak, around 16km of seal to the Eyre river via Oxford for a feed, and around 30km of Eyre river bed (soft gravel) and Waimak back to the starting point. I wouldn’t be gearing the bike too high, lower is better in this case, although there will be a bit of 100kph stuff on some of the shingle and on the seal. But it’s not a race, ride at your own pace.

It may take most of the day for the ride I guess, that why I want to start a bit earlier. (could be 6-8hrs, you can easily turn home at any point)
And now the days are getting longer and is not as cold in the mornings (not to day of coarse) so a earlier start is not so bad.
I would still bring something to eat and drink on the ride.
Even though we are going to have a lunch and a coffee in a town.
As the ride will still be a long one and you will appreciate a top up.
And dress for all types of weather, as it can change as you go up and down the river (winding and colder), so don't under dress as you may get cold.
But don't over dress (unless you can carry it) as if it does turn to crap we can bug out in about an hour. (does that make sense?)
As for gearing (as said) the ride is basically flat with small mounds and stop banks to climb over.
As long as you can take off and ride in deepish mud/sand or gravel and ride in the tighter stuff (in and out of trees) you should be alright.
It would properly be a good thing to be able cruise at about 100k's on the bits of road (tar and gravel) that will be on.
But don't worry to much about that to much about that.
See you there

… “I agree with you on the looking around thing. The Waimak is good, provides a challenge, and is close to home, but it's nice to explore new areas too.
I'm also keen to do an overnighter somewhere too - not stay in a cabin, but take everything with me and camp in the middle of nowhere.” …
… “I'm hearing you with this one. Righty-O peeps, homework for this month is to come up with some places to go riding during spring and summer.
The overnighter sounds like a good idea as well.”

Um, yes this trip was decided and expected to be following the map before mine. (same as mine but with out the red line).
Refer to lemans post #28 and Farqueues distance summery and map post 30.
The homework is more about what could follow in the comming months.

Now that the BMW1150GS is coming along for a ride as well.
And as it could hardy fit between some of the deep ruts and tree's.:gob:
And we also have a new rider that maybe an X MX champ or may not be.
We are going a good distance and I do not want to break up the group and have me riding like a mad thing to try and find the missing riders, like last time. (Which is hard in the thicker bush with all the other tracks)
Or us digging pulling and pushing the beast out of a deep mud hole and costing him damage.
I did a recon today in the 4X4 to see where the big Beemer should fit with out too much trouble as it is his (Mr S's) first off road ride on the beast and we can ride together and all enjoy.
I think the route will be good for everyone and challenge with out scaring the shit out of anyone.
As for the Eyre River I now think it would be too hard on the BMW and SDU (maybe coming out as well, she hates soft shingle) and will have to play that by ear and see how the trip up the river goes.

I stand corrected but it is my understanding that Rapaki track, Huntsbury track and Worsley Road are all paper roads hence can ride them. I dont think the Bridle path falls into the same category. I think it is a track over private land so not necessarily allowed to ride it.
I just checked on Ecan's mapping site and there is a land parcel that "looks" very much like a road reserve along the Bridel Path, Rapakai, Huntsbury, Kenedys, and a couple of others from top to bottom of the hills. Couldnt figure out who owns the Bridle Path track though but if it is council then it is my understanding that you cannot actually be stoped as long as you are road reg. Given the typical users I'm not supprised that you got some funny looks though.

B.P. is so well groomed I doubt it would have been all that much fun for you either.I used to ride it years ago when it was still very rough and rarely used by walkers. I last rode it around 3 years ago, just after I got the DR, after about 17 years away from dirt bikes. It was for nostalgia as much as anything. I rode the Bridal Path, Rapaki Track, and Mt Vernon track that day. Yes, they were all easy, but I got it out of my system and haven't been back to them since.

Very nice! Am gutted I couldnt have been there! Looked like there was some nice slushy gravel there to catch you out unawares on the return part of the trip!
Was the camera mounted on top of your helmet? You have a relatively steady head!

Damn, that's the one I wanted to download now (even on dial up cause work filters out all video ).
FQ, who was the silly bugger going along quite happily then kisses the dirt and wraps his bike around a tree? Must try that it looks likes fun :innocent:
Great video Transalper, top effort, especially with the mighty GS getting a fair amount of attention :niceone:

I'm uploading to a new location now. The only difference in contant (not quality) between the 3minute47sec and 5min version is that i included the sheep, cows and cafe in the longer version (youtube/google video ones) for the overseas viewers.

Hopefully you'll make the next time.
Camera under the peak on my MX helmet. Standing helps steady the picture...and not going flatout helps too. I cut most the jerky stuff out of the final cut.

Nice vid TA.
Very well done on getting FQ's little planting test. Glad he didnt have to pull the thing outa the hole though. He might had more offs after that!
the roost from Plug looks cool - maybe we should shower you in roost next time :dodge: :innocent:
That little woopsie of mine didnt look anywhere near as bad as it felt. I though that one was going to be a sunking for sure.

The GS never really got stuck - just couldn't get enough traction to go through one real soft patch of gravel and a slippery grassy slope.
