Hey all,
Im going back to a bike this weekend hopefully, and have been ringing around for a few insurance quotes, My previous bike was insured with AMI, til it was stolen around 4 years ago, and I have had car insurance with them since.
They have offered me comprehensive for $789 for the first year, and $477 every year after, with a 250 excess on accidents and theft. (apparently they cant give a no claims bonus in the first year regardless of my bonus on car insurance i.e. 40%)
Protecta came in at $882 P.a. with a whopping 20% of the bike value as excess. = $1000. When I told them about AMI they offered to give me the 40% no claims straight up, =$530 PA, but refused to change their excesses.
Given that my last bike was stolen, and this one is only worth around $4-5K Im not really keen on that high an excess.
State were completely unhelpful, the girl tried to tell me that they wouldnt insure me as you couldnt ride anything larger then a 50cc on a restricted licence! LOL Even after I set her straight she was unable to offer anything remotely competitive.

Anyone else got any others they suggest? At the moment I am thinking I might stick with AMI, maybe try haggle a manager into trying to give me the no claims bonus?

Yeah, AMI were brilliant and did a great job with my claim. Their excess is sooo cheap compared to others, however after my write off they took all my no claims bonus leaving me with a $1300 premium on the new bike:gob: So I took my business to Classic Cover in Hamihole for $560  They were loads cheaper than kiwibike, ebike, protecta etc

check em out at

I know I know, another farking insurance thread......but I am so stoked with my new quote for full insurance that I have to share.

Was with NZI (they do the car and house contents as well) but it was expensive at about $1000/yr (I only had 1 year of NCB in NZ when I was looking initially).

Emailed CLASSIC COVER my details and they have come back with $580/yr, so am stoked and would encourage others to give 'em a whirl as well, they are underwritten by VERO, so should be okay, however you need to be over 30 i believe.

the best kiwibike will do for me is 680. also your bike is 16 years old 400cc/250cc??? and worth about $4000 or there abouts of course your insurance will be cheap, get a quote for a 2 year old gsxr600 and come back to me then!

just got a quote from star insurance, a bit pricy compared to classic.

$838/yr full comp unlimited mileage

$713/yr full comp limited mileage (5000K/yr)

$122.50/yr clothing replacement up to $2500

SOS roadside $39.95/yr

$750 excess (standard and theft) $0 theft excees with datadots

A real pity the premium is so high 'cus the roadside and clothing seem reasonable, maybe I'll ring 'em back and wave classic quote in front of them.

watch this space.

ah bugger now I have to log off...damn dial up

yeah, thats true.

Just off the phone with star...they can't match classic...in fact the woman nearly feel off her seat, very interesting indeed.

So classic will win the day I think.

I'm with NAC for my Marauder, my premium was a bit higher ($600 vs 450ish) than what Swann offered (via Kiwibike), but Swann wanted me to have a $2300 excess purely because I have a 4.5 year old assault conviction. As opposed to NAC's more reasonable $700 excess, which is weird when they are both underwritten by IAG.

NAC's also been really good to deal with so far after I got taken out in May.. Accepted my claim without dramas, waived my excess when the other party admitted liability etc.

When I re-insured my GN250 to ride while the Marauders in the shop, NAC would only insure me for a year thou.. So I rang NZI (who have my contents/car etc) and theyve given me full insurance on it for $20 a month, and I can cancel it at any time.. MINT!

*EDIT*

Oh and Classic Cover will only insure you if your 30+ with a full license for 2+ years, or I'd be with them too, hear nothing but great things about.

Well after several phone calls and a couple of emails, I have managed to cut my yearly insurance premium by over HALF, admittedly I was paying way to much initially, but when I got my bike first this was the best quote I could get, I guess I now have more NCB and have had my kiwi licence for over two years I really don't know, but I've saved a WEDGE of cash and got a better policy as well.

Sarge, Star Insurance where top people to talk very nice and could do me a good deal, but not good enough - no one else knew what datadots where.

Now what to do with all the money I've saved...hmmm lets see trade in 600 and get 1000....I have a cunning plan

Classic Cover is the bizzo - I've got both KTM's insured there and they came out best in our Kiwi Rider survey of 2001. Their policy automatically includes helmets and dedicated riding gear up to $2,500, + roadside assistance provided by AA at an all up cost of just $25.

Classic cover is almost 8hundy cheaper than the quote from the bike shop.
Anyone have any experience of hassles or anything with claims? Should you need to.

yeah, those data dots, waikatoyamaha in the tron are doing them too. A little more than yours Sarge, but makes your theft excess zero iirc

The owner of Classic Cover is a great guy.
He has an interest in all motorsports and has onwed bikes in the past.
He came with us to the 2004 & 2005 MotoGP.

You can try Golightly insurance of Timaru if you want another comparison. They are specialist bike insurers (underwriten by Vero). My full cover is about $500 p.a. Have had one claim and it was approved instantly with no hassle. If anything they wanted to repair too much would you believe!

The speed with that they responded to the quote request was excellent, and with the positive feedback about them I think classic cover will be the way to go when I finally get my bike. Hopefully this year!!

I was with AMI - ran around $1200 per year for the RG500, BMW k100RS and Yamaha RD350LC (3rd party only). I changed through Kiwibike - now $750/year, with the Yamaha now full comp and a higher value, and the RG up in value as well, reflecting market prices. THe BMW excess also dropped slightly. I have limited (5000km year) on the RG and RD - not a problem as they will never get anywhere near that.
The car and house are with AMI still, and AMI have been very good with car claims in the past.

Classic cover have been awesome. I have had one claim when a bike was run over while parked and a current claim for a solo off. No hassles with either.

easier to do a google search on them, but very simply they are a security system you place on your stuff so if it gets nicked and recovered it can be scaned and returned to you.

I just got my AA insurance confirmation in the mail today, its $528.57 for my ride with a $300 excess, which is the comprehensive cover. The stupid thing about this is, when I tried to get it at first - they turned me down so I went through my parent's AA policy and lo, all was right with the world. Go figger!

Hi its shazzygirl here. Just adding something to your post here about your insurance. Through the internet today I got insurance on my new bike, a 06 VT Shadow, 750 from ebike insurance for $533/pa. I am over 40 years so it must have something to do with the age of the insurer and the fact that we have had our licences for years!

To drag up a long isnce dead thread, i just 1 min ago insured my gsxr 600 with state for 12500, and they gave me a $680 premium with 2k excess on me and theft. Happy with the premium, but excess is a bit heavy...however i have only had my full about 3 hours. Might have try that classic crowd...

Second that. Ring 'em up and talk to Dave or Donna.

You might want to grill them about prices/excesses etc, but the service they'll provide you is superb.

Yeah, but they were/are a joke. I would ride without insurance rather than pay what they want.
