Question - what's a 2002 Kawasaki ZX636A1 with 26,000k painted in black (professionally done, but not factory colour) worth? Supplied with clean and shiney factory numberplate mounts.

I told myself when I started riding motorbikes that they were a toy. Although I use mine for commuting, it is the fun factor that makes me do it. I have perfectly good public transport available to me. And in keeping with the toy theme, I vowed that if the money ever got tight, the toy would go.

Well I've just broken up with my partner. And since it's my house, my kid, and my furniture I keep the lion share of the bills. She gets the freehold stationwagon, I get the impractical little 2-seater convertible with finance on it, and the even more impractical 636 (also financed). At least the Sentra with 405,000k on the clock doesn't have any finance owing on it's $260 purchase price. All quite fair IMO, since I also keep the $100k my house has gone up by in the three years we've been together. But equity and cashflow are not one and the same.

The MX-5 is going. No ifs buts or maybes. And so is the Sentra. Now I can reorganise things and fit a $5k more suitable car into the equation, and keep the bike. But by keeping the bike that means I'm cutting into the "what if" cash, the stuff you can never budget for but always need when you have other responsibilities.

So I think it is time to honour my word... the toy must go. So how much should I expect to sell it for?

1989, red, 117k, Sony CD, 15 inch wheels, Dunlop FM-901 tyres, fairly good nick but it's still an old car. I think it's spent a lot of it's life around town, because the 2nd gear synchro is a bit worn. My previous one got thrashed within an inch of it's life for heaps more kays and the box didn't say anything.

Judging by trademe I'm thinking in the 4 to 5 range.

Sounds reasnoble to me but im just kicking tyres - I dont have the cash (or the want/need) to buy a cage at the moment.

Cowpoos - you can take that how you want, I like roadsters and have always wanted an mx-5.

MX-5s are pretty cool cars, but you have to a) have another car or no family, and b) be pretty comfortable with your sexuality. They're great for sticking it to young boys in fast cars through the twisties. Not so good when you get to the traffic lights at the end. Break up or not it was going to get sold, I'm too old to drive rough noisy cars.

How much are similar 636s with factory paint going for? Maybe 10-11k at a dealer, then 9.5k for private sale. factor in a discount for the respray. Maybe around the 8-9k mark.

I started a similiar thread today about current bike values, rather like this site.

http://www.parkers.co.uk/pricing/used_bike/

completly free site as well, I guess you could find your bike here and apply the relevent exchange rate and you should get a ball park figure. Assuming the original new prices where the same in each country and depreciation are about the same. unlikely.

Dumb question, but makes a difference; why was it resprayed? (you might as well mention it in your advert, because people want to know, bikes being crashed/dropped in all).

I think you should keep the bike and maintain a modest car for when you really really need it. I feel it is my duty as a member on this forum to try to persuade you to keep the bike. This is, after all is said and done, a good place for bikers to offer moral support to one another.

Go on...keep the bike....you know you want to...

Its on here somewhere but he did it to look more anonomous for some reason no crash damage, I suppose he could dig up the old thread as evidence for the prospective purchaser

Is selling the bike and cars and getting a cheap bike and cheap car an option?

Ive seen some really wicked MX5's: Toyota V8 powered, 13B rotary turbo you name it.

I would like to do one one day, but have other priorities at present. If doing the repower I would want to go thru the suspension, bigger brakes, better wheels... oh, and a rollbar. I reckon you could do it for ~10k maybe 12 and you would have something pretty wicked. And I like the noise an angry rotary makes.

as to your bike, sorry I cant help.

And the reason for the respray is well known in these parts. When you ride like me, you don't ride a bright green kwaka.

I was also thinking about the whole bike deal. I don't really classify myself as a motorcyclist. I mean, I don't know shit about bikes, I don't keep up with the latest in any particular field, I have no interest in the history and little interest in the racing. I don't practise to make myself a better rider, I don't read the mags, I don't do the training days, I have no desire to be the fastest guy in town. I figure I do it because it allows me to be above the law and do lots and lots of really dodgy shit... basically without consequence. And that isn't a recipe for a peaceful retirement.
