Got up walked over to Golf November Two Five Zero - didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Laugh, because I deliberately set off to do an emergency acceleration immediately after an emergency stop, Or
Cry, because I was in the carpark when it happened, and now all the guys and girls on Kiwibiker, will say 'Buck - you had your first off, but it doesn't count.'
Was able to ride it home, tomorrow will be down shop to replace handle bars L-rear indicator housing and bulb, L-rear tail light cover, L-footpeg.
Only have a sore left thumb and glad I had the full riding gear on.
Heads Up and Enjoy [At my expense....:nya: ]

I think ANY off should count as your first off.
That way you can get it over and done with with a minimum of fuss (and maximum skin retention).

Oh no, it so doesn't count. My first, and only, body meets ground event happened in a carpark 8 years ago. I don't count that.
I am the arbiter of what counts and what doesn't damnit. I am god.
On another note, good to see you are okay. I totally ruined the muscles in my wrist, didn't come completely right for about 6 months or so, if I remember correctly.
If you are still in any pain tomorrow, see a doctor. You may need to do something to prevent lingering injury, even if it is only your thumb!

Of course it counts. Any impact between the ground and any part of bike other than tyres or stand is a drop. Any impact between any part of body other than feet and ground is an "off".
In my early days of riding I used to go out on a muddy piece of ground and practice every type of "off" I could think of so that I'd recognise the signs when it happened in earnest. My later experiences proved that there are a few types of "off" that I didn't think of at the time.

Sorry to read about your "off" there BuckBuckNo1. I have been following your progress to date, and have been impressed with the way you went about it. Biting the dust sometime is almost mandatory for learners, but best at low speed (preferably not in front of witnesses)
PS: You have done much better than me. My first "incident" was less than a week of getting my first bike.

I had a tiny insy winsy lowside a few weeks ago :innocent: - fortuantly virtually the only damage was the right hand mirror and brake lever and a very minor scrape on the muffler.
Brake lever =$35
Mirror=$35
so i guess it looks like youll be in for a couple of hundred $$ then if your getting new components. At least there are no fairings
Good luck

I guess you found the limit..... Better in a carpark than in front of an 18 wheeler.
What actually happened?

Like they say - welcome to the club. I'd only been riding 3 weeks when I got knocked of....right outside Auckland Hospital. I cleverly put my knee between the tank and the ground to protect the bike as I slid gracefully along the tarmac.
As a result I still can't straighten my leg but ACC are paying for the physio - I had 3rd party insurance which didn't cover me for being creamed by an uninsured idiot but I was able to claim for Helmet, Jacket, Pants and boots through home contents insurance.
I say if you bit the dirt you bit the dirt (even if you do it in your own garage).
All the best.

BuckBuck1 - I am pleased to hear that you are ok.
Yep go and see your dr if your thumb is still sore... you may need physio on it.
The bike can be fixed.
Yep it is classed as a bin...... you came off the bike.
From what you were doing at your practise session, you will have learned heaps from this.
Have a wee chat with your mentor about it and see what you have to do different so this won't happen again.
Good to hear this wee bin hasn't put you off.

Thanks all for your comments. Golf November Two Five Zero is looking good, with change in riding style handlebars and new after-market mirrors, fixed tail light. Got the bars and light from Richards Motorcycles in Johnsonville. This morning had the footpeg arm straigthened at Cycleworks in Taita.
The bike with the new bars and mirrors I m pleased with, actually I was going to swap over to these bars and get the after-market mirrors in a few months time - perhaps sooner than I expected now
I want to post some pictures but the file sizes are over 1mb, in either jpeg, bmp or tif formats - any help in doing this appreciated.

Thanks for tht lead TLDV8. Here are the pictures still a little bit of work in progress but I am very pleased. You know it was a complete and utter ...whatever that the tank or side covers never suffered any damage whatsoever.

Hey BuckBuck, 1st let me say how grateful I am as another noob biker that has someone like you reporting and recording all your efforts and experiences. I'm glad you are okay and hope your thumb heals quickly! I've just been getting on my bike today and was so impatient to get riding, I started off in the wet!
It's thanks to your sterling and honest reporting that I've managed to take onboard some of the things you've said and encountered. You've inspired me to also start my riding diary and enter in it the format and details you've done!
So now, all I need is a mentor! heh ... as for your carpark incident, at least you were doing it to improve your skills - I almost took a drop myself after I was stationary and trying to take off! Fortunately I recovered and ended up taking a few deep breaths while parked on the pavement!
Keep it up BuckBuck! I would also enter my riding experiences, but I think it would pale in comparison!

Hey Buck,
Bummer about your off - at least it sounds like it was relatively minor. I haven't done it yet, but I came embarrasingly close while I was backing it up in my parent's driveway with my Mum watching (I don't think she realised that was a grimace on my face as I realised I was slowly tipping to the left!). That certainly wouldn't have counted since the engine wasn't even on, but I reckon yours does - heal up fast!
I'm looking at the day today and thinking WHY AM I ON CALL SO THAT I HAVE TO STAY IN EASTBOURNE (volunteer fire brigade)????? Aieeee!
*sigh*
Take care mate - hopefully meet you at one of the rides over the summer!

There'd be worse places to be stuck than cruising round Eastbourne on a nice day.
I'm also on call this weekend; my range is a bit better than that, but I don't think I'd be able to hear my pager over the bike - which may be the same for you :(
[and there it goes now :weep: ]

Yeah, that's pretty much my concern as well - never mind! It's only one week in 4...hope your pager wasn't anything too serious...take care!
Sorry to hijack your thread Buck! I hope you at least are out there enjoying a nice ride on your GN!

Gidday A_H, was a bit of a bummer:yes: ouch when I let go and my butt kissed mother earth.
Got up the Takas today. The bike has had a makeover and the new bars and mirrors have change the style. Look forward to spring and some rides to put names to faces.
You have a quiet day at 'the house'?

Yeah - which is all good I suppose. Except I was out in my garden doing some weeding when brrm brrm brrm about three bikes went past. Made my fingers itch..... :bye:
Was just reading your Sunday ride thread for today. Sounds like a good one. I haven't done the Takas yet - perhaps in a couple of weeks!

Prophetic words BuckBuck! Just today, I binned my bike in the back bushes! A stunningly simple thing to do, but at least it didn't cost $$'s nor flesh so it was a learning point!
So, I binned my bike on the 2nd day I've owned it! :innocent:
Total km's covered to date before binning : less then 300!
but I just picked it up, and go on riding again! A bigger grin on my face then ever before!
On with the learning, and learning safely that is!

Dang GI Joe
On the positive side, perhaps it's best done sooner than later. Now make sure you park it up, give it a good clean, and say sorry:yes:
Though it is only early days hook up with your mentor and talk about what and how this happened from your perspective in the first instance, then seek constructive feedback from your mentor and as time progresses, go back and revisit the circumstances that lead to you second day 'binning'. You will benefit from getting your mentor's input and in a few weeks you can both discuss the case with your having gained some more insight during your riding to appreciate more fully what went wrong.

Welcome to the off club Buck buck. You join an elilte group of luminaries with battle scars and a good tale to tell over a coldie down the pub.
My first off was in front of my mates in the bloody driveway of my house of all places. I clipped the carport pole with the edge of my handlebar and hello ground.
Had a couple since but that has to be my most embarrasing.
