I've got the ability to live in a reasonable area where people don't break into your house, and the conscience to know that however fucked up someone may be, they're still someone's son / brother / whatever...

Besides... guns don't kill people, rappers do.

Ok, maybe I shouldn't have put the words Home defence in the post. What personal weapons do you own for hunting or collecting?

I ain't allowed any guns. Long story.

I do have one antique crossbow with history, bits for another crossbow I'm building, and a 60lb 32 inch draw competition browning vanguard with all the fittings.

Plus the usual blades, because that place is used to store all my leatherwork stuff too.

I was thinking about getting me a licence and guns... I especially don't like the idea that when I'm away from home that all my girlfriend has to defend herself are, several knives of varying size, a baseball bat and a fire-extinguisher....

but... someone introduced me to bikes and now I have no money for it...

I used to have about 20 odd guns in the cabinet, now down to about 10, mainly old .22's.

My two workhorses are:

WW Greener 12 bore Empire double barrel, 28" barrels F & M;

Brno Model 2 Bolt Action .22 with 3-9x40 scope - will consistantly head-shoot rabbits at 100m.

Ahh! Another societal problem brought about by cops not doing their job properly!
Gray made himself known to the cops for an incident in the local shop shortly before his shooting spree, yet they did nothing of substance about it.
Then what happened...

Statistically speaking, you as a motor vehicle owner are far more likely to kill someone than a firearms owner is.

As a "statisically safe" firearms owner, I must therefore regard you with the utmost suspicion and distain.....

Oh yeah ... I have a Stirling 15 shot semi auto .22 locked away as well as a scary old semi auto .22 of undetermined brand that was my father-in-law's.
Also an ex Japanese army samurai sword that my father souvineered when he was released from his POW camp at the end of WWII. Also a couple of bayonets and a Pacific island war club of some description. It's the club that finds itself in my hands when things go bump in the night in our yard and I feel the need to go investigate.

Sawn-offs? Vastly over-rated exept for the 'fuck-off appearance perpetrated by them being in too many gung-ho movies.

Oh they're deadly all right inside a house or at real short range but give me an 8-shot pump action in preference.

BTW: Don't try firing a sawn-off one handed from the hip, there's a good chance you'll hit yourself in the face with the muzzle during recoil.

We've done this thread before, you know. My wee collection tends to turn over every so often, and are occasionally out on loan, and sometimes I spend a few months with someone else's gear in the cupboard, but at the moment:

- P-14 Enfield
- Model 38 Mosin-Nagant
- Akkar Mariner (18" 12-gauge pump) (home defense weapon du jour)
- Cheap-as-chips single-shot breakopen 26" something-or-other, I can't go check because my gun locker is 10,000km away right now
- A-classed ex-Australian L1A1
- Norinco .22
- Ruger 10/22
- Marlin .45ACP Camp Carbine
- M1 Carbine

And next month, or possibly the one after, unless I blow too much on booze and strippers, I'm going to buy myself a Savage .270, synthetic/stainless, with an adjustable Zeiss scope, a folding bipod and a suppressor from MAI Engineering in Glenfield. Reach out and touch 'em...

Given that we live in a polite and unarmed society, of course, my 'daily carry' is just a Spyderco Chinook. [Edit: see http://www.knifenetwork.com/reviews/review_02_spyd_chinook_al.shtml. Oh yesss, my baby...]

I went for my licence in my late 20's, despite a few run-ins with the law in my late teens / early 20's. No problem.

It depends what the convictions were for - if they involved serious violence you might have problems, but otherwise you should be okay.

Give it a go - and good luck!

2 - WW1 303 SMLE rifles with bayonets, 18 inch suckas.
3 - WW2 German Mauser 8mm.
2 - .22, one bolt, other semi auto.
2 - Winchester lever action, 307 & .45 calibre.
2 - shot guns, the pump action one as said previously sits behind our bedroom door as the gun cabinet is full plus one.

Also own a German MP40 machine pistol and a Thompson machine gun, and halves in a Vickers machine gun which is functional, and been used on a farm against wild goats.
Alas these live at a mate's house who has a secure armoury with all his heavyweight stuff.
Have'nt got around to getting the appropriate licence for the machine guns as its a pain in the ass with the conditions.

A dead end street, a bridge I can park the car in, cops for neighbours, and a damned good community that would make sure no-one really got away with anything.

Once they're past the bridge(which is at the very start of the road) - they're fucked unless they try to get out of foot... in which case they're fucked because of the tracker dog living about... hmmm 200m from our place?

There is a good way to defend youself in your home, get a high pich siren and some super ear muffs.

In America, where these "screamers" are legal, crims smash through windows to get away from them.

When I was a practising locksmith I soon came to realize that it was impossible to stop a determined lowlife from getting in, the only thing to do was to make it impossible for them to stay in. These sirens would work but we are not allowed to use them in NZ as they might hurt some skum's ability to hear.
