View Full Version : Political Spending Outrage

The Labour Party has been found to have improperly spent $400,000 of your money on political advertising. Instead of paying it back, Michael Cullen proposes retrospective legislation which will legalise unlawful spending. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10395688
I think this is outrageous. In the first place this is taxpayers money wrongly used by government MPs to shamelessly - I repeat shamelessly, promote their own political interests.
Secondly retrospectively legalising a past wrong is frowned upon in most democracies. It is very rare. And this is particularly true when it is solely the politicians themselves who benefit.
It gets worse. Cullen is now saying that all political party spending in NZ should be funded by the taxpayer. An open chequebook from us so they can send smug self-congratulatory letters to us about how wonderful they are. Makes me sick.

Every three years we have a choice. I can't believe that the country wanted more of the same last time...
Yes I know that all pollys tend to be tarred with the same brush. Time the taxpayer added the feathers??

It is just another sign of the complete lack of integrity the pollies have, and the total contempt they have for the voting public.

The taxpayer would still be paying...who pays the pollies anyway?? Besides, not many of them exist solely on their MP's pay, so it's not likely to be a big problem for them. Best thing is change the laws so that list MP's (career bastards) have to be voted in too

Didn't they do the same thing to save Harry Duynhoven (sp) committing a crime too?
Holding two passports or something wasn't it?
I think if you look back in depth it tends to be their stock in trade style of dealing with their own crimes, starting with the painting, I believe! :blip:
They don't call her the "teflon" prime minister for nothing. John.

Cant see that anything will change with the next election.........they have built a rather healthy war chest from the hard working taxpayers to buy their way back in next time.
All I can say is Guy Fawkes had the right idea :blip:

And the taxpayer just keeps on taking it. Local council here in ChCh wants to spend multi-millions on a new 'WOW' office building for themselves, at the expense of closing public pools and libraries.

The very short attention span of kiwis.....
The three years of government (in a nutshell):
1st year after election: kick the voters in the balls.
2nd year: pick them up off the floor.
3rd year: dust them off and tell them what good people they are...
re-election time.
Unfortunately the kiwi cannot remember being fu*ked over longer than a year ago. Hopefully you can remember the enjoyment of being told at the last election, that you will get a tax cut? When there is billions of surplus tax dollars being collected in various ways, you will get a tax cut to enable you to spend the same amount as a packet of chewing gum... in 3 years time.
Remember how you have been treated by YOUR representatives at the next election.

National wont take my hard earned money and give it to people who earn more than me just because they have *decided* to have children.
I am on an above average salary. I cannot afford to buy a house. My tax money is going to other people who earn more than me.

They will if it suits them - lets face it - they're all a bunch of crooks! Just that they get more arrogant the longer they are in power!

Well on this particular issue they are. National wrongly spent $10,000 and have repaid it.
Labour wrongly spent $400,000 and aren't going to repay it. New Zealand First are squirming too.

I have to admit I saw red on this... it's not the amount of cash involved - it's the principle.
They blew their budget which assisted to get into power only to change the rules such that their budget was not blown...??!!??
WTF?
This sets a precendent for any future parties to spend all they want, call it taxpayer money, then change the rules after they get into power to suit themselves and/or disadvantage other parties. They've gone from being too PC to full of BS
