OK ppl

Bike

1985 kawasaki gpz1000rx (zx1000A).

Problem

Starter button dosent work (i.e bike wont start when button pushed no sound no nothing)

Dianogistics.

At first I thought maybe water had got into the starter switch and corroded the connections etc, stipped the switched cleaned and put back together and nothing happend - tested it with multi meter and its working.

Then I thought 'starter relay' so I checked that, and its still working.

Next Idea was to check the starter relay diodes, I havnt got around to that just yet - will let you all know how that goes.

Then Of cource Ive checked the tyre pressures and they are fine.

Help

What are the other main causes for this? any help would be great.

Starter "relays" (actually, solenoids) don't have diodes.

Y'r fuse is blown.

Kill Switch :wait:

yea i had similar problem. yea could be fuse/side stand switch/clutch switch or as i found out the main loom lugg had a pin pulled out....its a long process, you just gotta go back to what you did last before it used to start and track down from there.

Real men don't need starter motors... :motu:

Well according my schematic and the diodes (3 of them) sitting in there it does....

There not part of the relay but there part of the circut.

No blowen fueses. (sorry should of noted that at the start.)

Yes its not the damn kill switch.

And what is a clutch switch?

And what is a clutch switch?

A switch activated by the clutch lever (it is mounted under the perch and clutch lever)....... You normally have to pull the clutch in to start.

It might be easier to work from the starter relay back by using a Ohm meter on the 20v DC setting and checking for power at the relay wires from the loom with the start button depressed etc..fwiw

Then I thought 'starter relay' so I checked that, and its still working.

If that is what this test was..You could try shorting the poles, bypassing the relay.

My dad's GS500 requires you to have the clutch pulled in to use the starter or else its the same as pressing the starter with the kill switch on. I guess it's for old people who forget they've left the bike in gear and hit the kill switch.

Starter I mean, not kill switch.

According to the diagrams there's one diode & a relay (circled in the 1st pic)
the clutch switch is circled in the 2nd pic

How good the batt?
Had the same prob on the my ZX - Batt terminal was poked

Or, at least on my bike, have the gearbox in neutral. How about the neutral switch?

Where did you get those pics from? they have minor differance with my actual circuts...

In my haynes book it says it only has one diode but infact it has 3.....

OK, can someone please tell me how the cluctch switch works?

My bike starts now only with the clutch pulled in, It didnt use to, is this normal? (and the reason it started before was becasue the switch was gone?)

Thanks heaps for all your help :)

More probably it's your neutral switch is OS. Neutral switch and clutch switch are in parallel - so you can start the bike EITHER - in neutral OR in gear with clutch disengaged. I'm guessing before you started it in neutral. Now neutral switch broke (or maybe liuttle light bulb not work?) so the only way is with clutch out (in neutral or in gear).

is your neutral light lighting up when it's in neutral?....it's basically part of the circuit so you don't wind the starter in gear with the clutch out or else you may look a bit silly,

so they make it so that the clutch must be in if it thinks it's in gear...if your neatral light isn't working / doesn't know when it's in neutral the bike must have clutch pulled in as it thinks it's in gear....basically safety features.....

if you can live with it not starting without clutch in sweet as but otherwise refer to the manual and find out where the neutral position sender is.....if your neatral light isn't coming on , the wire may have just come off ...it will probably be by the sprocket cover somewhere genrally but check your manual

hope you can make some sense out of that i suck at wording stuff

Side-stand switch? clutch switch? Such technology!!

Never had a bike with those.

The Pastor

Ok, I dont have time to play around with the switches now, but the nutreal light is working.

I might have to replace the diodes (they say there saftey diodes)....

Cheers for the help!
