well OFFICIALLY anyway, got my first stamp in my race licence
and what a fun day it was too!
I had a borrowed bucket...again...still TRYING to get one, but no luck so far.
So thanks to Stanko again for lending me his beastie...shes a good ride actually, nice and sure into the corners, but being a heavier bike not quite the same pickup as some of the ligther ones. Tho i reckon she could do a lot better with a good racer on her...but I am improving!
I'd say TonyB may just agree with that eh Tony?? :innocent:
I'd say by the end of the BOB endurance race next month I'll either have her completely sussed or I will be crying with the pain of trying to get her round the track for an hour. :blip:
Just gotta work on my technique, which altho improving, still has a long way to go. The pegs on this bike are not quite right for me and I have trouble getting my feet back far enough, but I WILL get there. Think some practice in the garage is required
So will post a few piccies courtesy of SuziQ mostly, tho i did manage to get out for the pre82 to take some pics. Was quite nice and peaceful to be out taking pics again altho briefly.

Had a great Time! Was a bit gutted because there wasn't a third non points race, was gonna swap bike with Frank Thomas (Johnny Boy) but unfortunatly there wasn't enough time!
Had a pretty near off when the top quality bauld in the middle Chengy Shin on the back let go shuddering and sliding, almost lowsiding me, but I just caught it in a huge wobble when the back gripped again sending me towards the side of the track, just staying on by a couple of inches!
Happened to me on the hairpin as well, any suggestions of why the back end might shudder and slide around? Would it be the great quality of the cheng shin, or might it just be the shitty old 28 year old shocks on the back?
Bloody throttle cable came off the twist grip just as I went to start out on the first race! Ment I was a lap behind, although I started out right at the front which was fun! :scooter: A winner out the front, if only for a few seconds as they blasted past!:bye:
Was a bit less agressive in the second race due to the near off in the first race, gonna have to check the fork oil and sort out a fork brace which I don't have anymore after the front mudgard snapped off after a couple of accidents. Will check the oil in the back shocks to and see what thats like.
Didn't seem to be as many buckets this time, was very amusing at the start of the second race seeing everyone coming into the first kink REALLY close, IE Wheels touching etc, was good for a laugh. I backed off a little though as I didn't want to see any accidents, was really funny as on the last lap Frank Thomas (Johnnyboy) slowed down around the hairpin for me to catch up as he wanted to have a bit of a play and WHAM I flew past him, beating him which was really funny.:first:
Was good to see some of the usual suspects out there, was REALLY stoked at the BBQ after to have some actual nice tomato sauce, not like that gross mad butcher shit they had the other times, was a great change.
The weather was looking a bit doubtful in the afternoon as a large storm cloud started sifting towards the track but it held off which was good.
Was great to see everyone and I'm looking foward to the battle of the buckets! WIll get in my entry when I get paid!

only 20 this time, a bit more manageable than last time. And hell yeah i saw all those elbows going out, was like kiddies trying to get to the front of the queue for the icecream  Happy enough to just stick to the back of that lot! WEEEeee HEEEeeeeee, good shit people... as usual. The day didnt start of the best with a trailer tyre being riped open from them wee punk fuck wits that litter the road that Ruapuna is on, in there dumb arse wipe pishhhh shit boxes spilt diesel and glass for miles, the wee runts should trash there own pride n joys.
Anyway the trailer was a problem for a while as one of Rashika's pics shows... but after that pratice went well in F4 and Post Classics.
Race 1 F4: and was well off the pase that I have been at, I put it down to changing the gear pattern to match the Kat, which had me ballsing the gears up something big, still managed a 8th place
Race 1 PC: the old Kat is a handfull and I dont get the best start but finish a nice somewere mid field.
Race 2 F4: way beter start and only cocked the gears up a few times and beat a few lowsey riders like Bren infact 2nd KBer home.
Race 2 PC: awesom start 2nd into line, but was soon passed by some of the hot shots 5th over the line I think.
And due to a big wipe out that was the day, beer, snag off the BBQ and it was off home.

The weather was better than we expected - needed the sunshine for my cold!!! Got to take some cool photos of the guys and girls and here are some others.

Diesel pig’s Rd4 meeting
Saturday
Well the weekend started out all right. Having had the porting in my bucket attended to by top kart bloke Brian Day, I would need to sort out the jetting so my old man and me headed out to our favourite bit of quiet country road, We started out with a 260 main jet we had used before but it was way lean, problem was the only bigger main jet I have is a 350 which is a big jump in one go, So we put it in which help a lot but it was really a bit rich now. Gave Kickaha a call but he had sold all his big main jets along with his superkart not even stopping to consider my needs at all when he did so, typical!
Kickaha did say to give Stanko a call and my new best mate Stanko did indeed have some and he would bring along on Sunday, so that was sweet as.
Race Day
Rocked down to Ruapuna on Sunday early to track down Stanko and his lovely jets.
Got a 310 off Stanko and tried it out down the access road out the back of the pits.
It was a lot cleaner at the top of the revs brilliant.
Bucket Practice
I hooked in behind Tony Mac on his FXR on the second lap of practice and managed to inch pass him by speed alone on the back straight. This boded well I thought to myself then DC blew right past me. Damn, Still some tuning to do!
Pre 82 Practice
James had asked me to show him some lines around the B-track in the practice so I went slow on the straights so James would be right behind me when I went into the corners so he could get a good look at my lines. James said he got a lot from it so that was cool.
1st Bucket Race
I did some stoppies on the dummy grid to get me in the mood, as I wanted to do well. When we were let out on the warm up lap I pushed hard to get on the front row, netting a spot on the right side of the front row for a straight run to the kink. I got an O.K. start with less than half-dozen buckets in front of me at the kink and only James, Tony Mac and Dangerous by the hairpin. I pushed hard to get in the lead thinking DC must be close behind. Got the lead by the second lap and strung together three fast laps thinking all the time that DC must be closing me down. Saw the white flag, Lapped Rashika (so I must have been going quick as I did not manage to do that at the last meeting) on the back straight saw the marshals pull out the checkered flag and realised I was going to win the race I was so stroked I punched the air. On the warm down lap I looked behind me to see James behind me his best result so far, DC had got fourth behind Tony Mac. Turns out he got a bad start but shit a win’s a win.
Damn that first Bucket race was the highlight of the day for me. After that I got knock off Black Betty in the first Pre 82 race at the hairpin. Black Betty got slapped around a bit and I dnf that pissed me off. I was still put off by the knock off in the second Bucket race and only got fourth. James his old man and my old man kicked Black Betty straight again. I wasn’t interested in any more crap so in the second Pre 82 race I got out the front and stayed there to the finish.

Sorry for the late participation....
Was a good one over all. Just the cold that freezed my brain over in the late afternoon...
My heart was in my throat there for a while when DP came off... thats not supposed to happen Neil... glad you are ok though mate :first:
2 great riders of day I reckon:
DieselPig - what a recovery... Black Betty came out screaming as did the rider in the second run of pre 82, great stuff! Stay out front mate... less complications
and Bren_chch - had only been on a bucket once before, gets out there on a foreign bike and runs top six... stunner Bren (extra marks for kicking dangerous's arse as well)

Yer it was a pretty good day, also the first bucket race the highlight for me, suprised to see Tony Mac get third in buckets buts thats all good.
However, I was keen to see what Tony's new cams bike would go like. An 1976 XL350 with a hot cam, different pipe and carb it was and being a dirt bike I didn't think it would handle too well. He persisted that it would, the old 250s sat fine on the road, so out he went... and dissapointed he came back in. He said it definatley had a lot of go, but whenever he tried to brake or corner harder, the damn thing felt terrirble at the back! Spud racer came over after riding behind him for a few laps and said that his back end looked horrible. So when we got home, out came the back well, and what do you know, it was buckled.
So next time then, it'll be out there and probably faster, as the wheel is due in to be fixed.
Oh well still a good day in all cept for the crash in a BEARS class which ruled out a third race :(
see you there next time!

So just how much coin is required to enter bucket racing?
A list of things I can see I'll need are: boots, 1-piece leather suit, trailer, bike & prep costs. Rough figure I've arrived to is $4,000 :gob: and that's with purchasing a basic FXR150/KR150 and not an RS125.
All this time I thought bucket racing was like budget racing, i.e small amount of coin required, but that idea appears to be incorrect.

I bought my bike for $300 and spent a further $100 or so getting it up and running. I already had the leathers etc but you could get kitted out for under a grand.
P.S. Can't run a kr150 in buckets, max sized 2 stroke is 125cc.

You have allready got a bike borrow some gear and for under $100 you can get a day licence and try it. But as K14 said go racing for under a grand you dont need to buy new or the best that money can buy.

It really depends on your personal situation. The amount it costs expands to exactly fit the amount of money you have available. You already have the bike. One piece leathers are not essential, 2 piece are ok (zip together) Say $700 new $100 to 300 used. You dont need a trailer, but should you feel you have to have one they are about $20 per day. prep costs for your bike 1roll of tape $10. maybe some tyres, used often free, new up to about $500 if you are silly.
Race licence $90.00
Entry $40.00
Food $10.00
Fuel $10.00
Trailer$20.00
Gear Say $500.00
Tape and number boards $25.00
Tyres (shitty tyres ok, free) good tyres used maybe $100
So $800 to get to the track the first time on your FXR, $500 of that is saftey gear,
After that allow $100 per meeting
It is cheap, compared to any other class.

Sounds like you want to talk yourself out of going racing?
Boots, 1-piece leather suit and trailer are things you would need if you were going to campaign a F1 bike or a Bucket.
$4000 sounds abit steep to me. In Buckets the idea is beg or borrow as much as one can, as well as looking at what you can get away with e.g. Boots; the rules say they must be leather and cover the ankle, well a set of old work or army boots can cover that.
At the end of the day it comes down to what you are prepared to pay.
Motor sport in general is not cheap, Buckets compared to 90% of motor sports is budget racing.

Well, looking at Stanko's cost which are pretty accurate, it was costing me that to race my ZXR400 in F3, infact apart from tyres the costs for most bikes will be the same. ie Its not any cheaper to race buckets, just the intial outlay for the race bike should be cheaper. But you could race in Pre 82 for the same amount of coin. Not sure what Spudracer paid for his CB250RS, but you could probably pick up something for around $1000 maybe?
Bucket racing would be cheaper probably for the guys up North etc racing on car parks and kart tracks, they may not have the same licence and race day fees applicable down here.
But it also depends what your aspirations are, do you just want to race or are you expecting to be at the sharp end of the field?

Paid $300 and another $250 to prep the CB250 for the track, cheaper than most buckets. The only problem is my B track lap times are slower than on the bucket, but its a second ride.
As for carparks v Ruapuna we a VERY lucky to have the chance to run on full circuit race tracks.
As for anyone thinking of road racing bucket racing is equal to any class (in my eyes) for excitement, we race hard & corner speed is as fast as most classes its just the straight line speed thats lower.
