Damn 'Target Fixation'... happens to the best of us.

I was cursing myself yesterday when I went out for a blat. I had been off the bike for a couple of weeks and it's crazy how a few days off the bike can turn you into a complete squid.

Whilst negotiating my favourite nearby hills, there was a big leaf in the road about 50 metres up ahead. Inner monologue piped up:
"Hmm... looks like a squirrel"
"Nah, it's a leaf"
"It could be a hedgehog..."
"Nah, definitely a leaf"
"WTF, HERE COMES THE CORNER~~!"
I was stupidly concentrating on the leaf for only a second or so, but it kept my eyes off the rapidly approaching bend.
No drama, just angry with myself for being caught out so easily. Mental note for next time...

What have you been fixated on recently?
(Hotties on the footpath? :blip: Details man! Details!)

You got to leaf those things alone and concentrate on the ride.

My last lapse was following a car around some real narrow coast road. There was no room to pass so I just admired the scenery. Almost got to see more than I planned.......

Riding home from a long day at work  I found myself reading bumper stickers. Got close enough to read the fine print on one of them.

Slapped myself and rode more attentively home.

You need details with that sort of talk.....

Nothing like looking at a hot chick thinking your the  biker then almost running into the back of a car eh......

Taupo trail ride , came of a hill , rh corner onto a gravel road over a bridge with no sides , onto an up hill drive

If you lost the front it was a 3m drop into a rocky river , the loose pea gravel on the bridge was making the front loose

was I target fixating ,,,,HELLL yes ... it took a mammoth effort to look UP the hill and not down at the Oh sh1ttt ...creek ( that was a joke that was ...river ...big drop ...sh1t creek ....no?? oh well back to the drawing board )

My first accident was up the back of a car .... I can still remember what I was fixated on , blonde white see through boob tube , and hot pants ...well it was the seventies!!!

Spent two or three weeks nursing Nuts the size of watermellons ,,,luckliy I wasnt getting any at that time ...

If you were getting some at the time you probably wouldn't have target fixated.

Yeah right......

He yeah I revert to learner status for the first few hours of riding after a break. I also get a massive shot of an adrenaline hit from my brain as I'm putting on the gloves. Bad combination!

thats how i broke my collar bone a couple of months back, saw some people messing about on a flat bed trailer in a field, when I looked back at the road, I was already half way round the corner. All I could do was ditch it and bounce off my shoulder.

I'm a recent convert to target fixation. On Sunday (on the second day of owning my bike!), I binned off after doing a S-bend, made the left no probs but the right turning corner...

I didn't have my bike head on and look for sight view continually around the corner and instead thought "hmmm...there's a power pole on the corner there....stop looking at it...stop..." and then found myself aiming for the soft patch away from it!

Dropped bike onto grassy bit and was thinking "damn, hope my bike is okay!". The next thought was "stupid stupid noob mistake by not turning head to look at taking the curve". :wait:

Thanks for all those sharing their experiences!

Shortly after getting my licence, was riding in (Welly) town. Took a left turn into side street when I spy a tall, leggy, auburn-haired beauty coming my way.
Head rotated nearly 180 degrees as I passed her... which is why I didn't notice the van in front had stopped.
Pranged into the back of said van at about 25kmph - just enough to rough up the back to the tune of $150 panel work. I didn't look back again to check her reaction, but if I had, I'm sure she would have been laughing at me. :slap:

Thats why I always travel either to the left or right of the car I am following , so if it suddenly stops I see it sailing past out of the corner of me eye !!

Ie I missed it ... and can carry on Perving !:first:

There are hotties in Wellington? EVERYBODY is the shape of a 'fridge with the 12 layers of thermals and wet weather gear required this winter!

It's that darn multi-tasking thing, well the lack of. And brain fade, momentary lack of fuel, rush of 'WHOA! chemistry.
