15th August 2006, 17:06
About a month ago I put up a poll (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=32762)to see who/what people wanted to do for a Northern Ride during Labor Weekend. The results came in for the 'Northern Exposure 3-day trip up to the Lighthouse (Cape Reinga) and back'. Below are the details of what/when/how things are goin to go (Im open to suggestions tho...) and how you go can go ahead and book yourself some accomodation. There is the option of bringing a tent. Remember, first in first served!
A 3 day tour during Labor Weekend - 21st, 22nd and 23rd Oct '06
Up the West Coast to the Lighthouse @ Cape Reinga and back down the East Coast.
The Tour includeds:
Saturday 21st Oct
- Meet @ Westgate Shell, head up SH16 via Peak Road to Wellsford
- Join SH1 to Brynderwyn take Maungaturoto turn off along SH12 (Same route taken as in the famous Opononi ride)
- Meet up with the Norfland crew, take some back roads to Dargaville
- Pass through Dargaville, WAIPOUA FOREST (can stop to see giant Kauri tree if need be), and Opononi.
- Take the Vehicle Ferry from Rawene across to Kohukohu. PRICING/INFO HERE (http://www.fndc.govt.nz/maritime/ihokiangaferry.asp)
- Rejoin SH1 and "BLAST" throught the Maungamuka Gorge (Voted No.1 in the KB 'Greatest bit of road' survey) to Kaitaia
- Time permitting and sore bums, could go out to Ahipara for a looksee etc..
- Finish up for the first day @ Waipapakauri Ramp , Ninety Mile Beach Top 10 (http://www.ninetymilebeach.co.nz/). We are staying here for two days in cabins (OR TENTS IF YA TOO SLOW IN BOOKING YA ACCOMODATION!).......:nya:
Sunday 22nd Oct
- Head up North along SH1 past Houhora, Te Kao, Waitiki Landing up to the North Cape Lighthouse
- Last 20kms IS IN GRAVEL! If you do not wish to ride in gravel you can stay @ Waitiki Landing for a cuppa, they have a nice takeaway/cafe there (awesome breakfasts!)...
- For those who have not been up to the cape, take the oppotunity to ride to the end of New Zealand, you cant go any further than the lighthouse! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Cape_reinga_lighthouse.jpg) You can see where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day you can also see the Three Kings Islands.
- On return we drop in @ Houhora (for a icecream?) and head back down to Awanui to drop into the Ancient Kauri Kingdom (www.ancientkauri.co.nz) (awesome walkthrough staircase inside a Kauri tree)
- Time permitting we could do a couple of more rides ... options open...maybe the Mangonui Fish Shop for late lunch...
- Ride back to Ninety Mile Beach Park for a drink or 5 and then settle in for a Lamb on the Spit Smorgasboard (YUMMY, just ask QKKID what he thinks of it!)
Monday 23rd Oct
- Depart Waipapakauri Ramp head south on SH1 turn off @ Awanui onto SH10
- Travel the Beautiful and picturesque East Coast down through Taipa, Coopers Beach, Cable Bay
- Could stop in @ Mangonui Fish Shop for the best seafood and Fish 'n Chips in the area (We could do this on Sat or Sun instead if time permits....)
- Continue to head south via East Coast's beautifuls roads including Matauri Bay (http://whangaroa.co.nz/Matauri_Bay.cfm) (Where the Rainbow Warrior rests) ending up @ Kerikeri for Breakfast.
- Take the backroads to link up with SH1 and procede to Kaikohe
- Backroads through Twin Bridges re-connecting to SH14, head back through Maugaturoto then onto SH1
- Can go either way (SH1 or SH16) but would recommend SH16 due to Long weekend traffic.....
- Fin.
This will be a MEDIUM PACED RIDE (open road crusing @ 120 if the coast is clear.... not warp speed, it IS a tikitour...) I have included a ruff map so you can see where we are going. (Green, first day/Pink, second day/Blue, third day.):ride:
PLEASE NOTE*****You are responsible for your own bookings, we are all grown adults here (well some of us are...) I will not be doing any bookings for anyone!
We have booked our accomodation for the 21st and 22nd Oct with Ninety Mile Top Ten (http://www.ninetymilebeach.co.nz)(they are right on the doorstep of Ninety Mile Beach) You can ring them on 0800-367-719. They do have quite a few cabins left. Details of what is avail follows:
"Basic cabin that will sleep five the cost is $60 per 2 persons per night and $14 for each extra person per night. We also have ensuite cabins that will sleep three in each cabin including 1 couple. They have 1 double bed and 1 single bed $75 per 2 persons and $14 per extra and the other cabin has 3 single beds $75 per 2 persons per night and $14 per extra".
We will have 3 extra beds in our cabin but will be charging $28pp/per night to spread the costs amongst us. (PM me if ya interested) And for those who dont want to blow too much $$$$'s Tent sites are $14 per person/night. Make sure that you put aside some $$'s for the Sunday night Lamb on the Spit Smorgasborad, that will be $25pp. Booking this with your accomodation is advisable as this dinner does get booked out. (You will see why - YUM!) There is also a bar there for those drinkies after the days ride.:niceone:
In general the Labor Weekend up north is fine weather, so lets hope nothing changes... This ride is going ahead regardless of the weather.....:sunny:
Once you have booked your accomodation or if you are riding part-way with us, please enter your name on the list of 'whos comin' you can FIND IT HERE (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=924&day=2006-10-21&c=1). See you all on the Saturday!

oooh, a fellow GPX250 :) as far as I can tell, I'll definitely be making this trip, and yes, a 250 will do just fine..
argh.. QkChk, this is supposed to be easy.. now I'm gonna have to work out how to do bookings.. argh.. well, hopefully I can work out that part..
Ps. QkChk: can you give me a guestimate of total trip cost (not including petrol, although estimated kms would be useful), as my brain isn't functioning at the moment :innocent:
*Edit: QkChk: Have PM'd you :)

Yeah with all the interest there was before, seems everyone blabs their gob off but no-one actually does anything on here.............
I'm gettin sick of bumpin the thread so its up to people to get themselves organised (BLACKYOHSI1000) had an arse of a time trying to sort out last years ride, we had a good turnout but only after the 'mad last minute rush' got the numbers up. Seems that's how things operate 'round here. I know some of you have commitments like work and family but thats why Ive advertised far ahead to give you more time to sort things out.............:dodge:
...................but as I've said before and will probaly say again; 'Dont say I didnt warn you about missing out on a cabin' -
Book now to avoid taking a tent.........

Yes its goin to be a well-behaved ride tomorrow, last thing we need is for someone to lose their license on the way up! (Or even way up north, its a long walk back home) Its gonna be a med paced ride (100-130kph) so if ya plan on going for a break-neck speed hoon, bugger off to the Coromandel.:dodge:

It was a bloody good ride up here, DMNTD gave me the learn coming up from Dargaville and I managed to get the fairing down on those nice norfland corners :devil2:
Unfortunately I also managed to get the fairing down on the way back from dinner, will be nursing the bike back to Auckland :innocent:

Did a Norfland ride yesterday. SH16 up SH1 to Kiatia then through the Mangamuka gorge and onto the Rawene car ferry, through the waipuo [sp?] forrest through Dargaville and back down SH1 and then SH16. 711kms in one day.
Set out with no destination in mind vaguely aware I might bump into you guys, alas it was not to be......
Its 3.30 and I am still totally wired, my ears are ringing and all my minds eye can see is road.
Hope your weekend was as good as mine.

Hi all
Well we are back safe and sound from the Norfland ride. We had a blast of a weekend, inspite of not doing any riding yesterday. We decided to have a lazy day round camp and walking on the beach. Thanks to the QKs for the organisation!!! You are legends!! :2thumbsup. I will let others tell the stories as needs be but I did behave!! :innocent: Just remember folks if you stay at this camp there is no noise after 11 pm or the Camp Kommandant will get very grumpy indeed!!!
Caught up with Cowboyz and Meanie at the camp late yesterday afternoon as well as three other Ulybods doing the four points rally.
We came back down SH1 and then turned off onto SH16. The traffic was at a standstill even north of Wellsford by 1 pm. It poured down on us on SH16 but good wet weather gear gave us protection.
All in all a top weekend!! It was great to meet up and spend time with some awesome KBers too. Thanks everybody.

Well Scorpygirl and I went on the Northland Weekend and had a ball. A very well organised ride up on Saturday, with a good food stop in Dargaville and naturally a wait at the Rawene Pub for the Ferry.
Saturday evening everyone got into party mode and had a good time.
Sunday dawned and those who felt like a ride went up to the Cape. Some of us more mature (Old farts) decided that a sleep in a and a stroll along 90 mile beach was a better idea.:zzzz:
The Sunday evening lamb on the spit dinner was excellent and worth the money.
When I went in to the restaurant to buy a bottle of wine at around 8:40, I was asked to "make sure that they don't go on too long":shit: (a reference to the 4:30 am finish on Sunday morning.) Not sure why I got the job, maybe because they thought the group would listen to a white haired old fella. Yeah Right!!!! Everyone did turn in early in preparation for the Ride home this morning.
Many thanks to the Qcks for organising a wonderful weekend.:first: Hope that Scorpygirl and I can partake of many more.

Well, it was fuckin cold, wet, windy, and pouring down, visibility was crap and the roads were like ice, and to top it all off my gate opener went on the blink, had to scale the fence in my soaked gimp suit to get in :bleh:
Aside from that it was a great weekend guys, really enjoyed it
Thanks Qkchk & QK Kid for organising the ride.
Big thanks to geoffm for dismantling my bike and doing a much better job at keeping the oil in than I did, couldn’t have made it home without you :niceone:
Once again thanks’ for the hospitality DMNTD & Duc-Gurl, will see you next weekend :Punk:
Great so see some old faces and meet some new ones, will definitely be back up that way again! (Thanks for putting up with me guys :devil2:)

I can take credit for the boots, they are now much worse than the pictures (though you should see DMNTD's ones), and yes my GPR70's now come in a Spearmint flavour :D
And it wouldn’t be a KB ride without at least one trip to repco :Punk:

Great weekend guys, with some really good rides over the weekend. I know I did nearly 800ks, and we're in Whangarei, so you Aucklanders must have done a fair few miles. Toasted my back tyre finally, but Ive got nearly 7,000ks out of it (not like some people I know <_< ). Was good to bump into other KBers who just happened to be up North as well, thanks for introducing yourselves and joining us for a few.
Company was great, but why do the nabours always have to complain? Thanks the Quicks its a good annual ride.

Bloody good to catch up with you guys up there you look like you were havin a good time (especialy the night before)
We got home with no probs, took about 13 hours with comfort, fuel and lunch stops and it pissed down all the way home apart from about 30 mins around Ohakune
Had a blast with auckland traffic between whangarei and the Auckland motorway, got a lot of friendly Auckland waves, a little stange though waving with one finger :gob:
the old guy that stayed at the motor camp with his old triumph had a tripple bypass only a few weeks ago  you wouldnt know it the way he dealt to that traffic
Very impressed with the array of sports bikes lined up at the camp almost makes me wanna go out and buy one

We had mixed messages on how much gravel was up in cape reianga so we never ended up going up that high. Starting to regret it a little bit to be honest. I feel another road trip coming on. so close yet so far.

Hopefully it wont be too far away. I am always keen.
The ride home was very interesting. 1000km in the rain is a different kind of fun. I was real sore until I was so sore I just didn't care anymore.
On the upside.. The 13km commute to work this morning seemed very short.

Thanks to Quik Chick for organising such an awesome ride and weekend away, we enjoyed the great roads and company, but would be great to do it again on my own bike, although I think we did rather well on Tinks little 750.
My bikes back on the road again with a slight modification. We had a good quiet ride back and picked up my bike on Monday, hope to do those roads again, see you next time.
