View Full Version : Who's made their own TRE?

I made a switchable TRE and installed it but when i turn on ignition the lcd comes up with cpi and i put it in dealer mode and c31 came up which relates to the GPS.
the resistor was a 5 watt 15ohm which seems the same on a webpage i looked at but now i think the wattage is to high and think maybe the .6 watt is the one im meant to be using but still 15k ohm.
does anyone know which one to use?
im using the 15ohm one for the 6th gear resistance.

Yep, it's a piece of piss. I used a 1/4W xxxohm resistor (can't remember quite what ohm value, but I'm pretty sure 15k is correct for a TL). It will not matter if the wattage is too high. You can't go far wrong wiring it in, do you have the website link you used?

i've tried all sorts of different variations , tried making it non switchable.
the resistor is quite big compared to one i,ve seen from a pic a guy took of his.
mine is a ceramic rectangle block and his is a real small cylinder looking one.
the website i went to is.
www.wotid.com/tls/

also the letters on the resistor read " 5W15RJ "
not sure if that means 5 watt 15 ohm not sure what the RJ means though.

? I'm guessing you don't mean tree...?

Check out this one. http://81x.com/bugman/gixxermods

I've used it a couple of times and it works well. (although I used a 6.8k ohm resistor as they were on Gixxer thous).

The power rating of the resistor does not matter, it's basically how much current the resistor can handle before going bang. Your wiring is wrong. compare it to the diagram on the link provided, and check the continuity of all your solder connections. If that doesn't sort it let me know.

Edit: also, check the resistance of your resistor.... whats the colour code?

I made a SATRE using the drawing off Steve's website,it works fine but might remove it to see how things go with the PCIII...You could double check the wire locations off this pic..fwiw

not sure if that means 5 watt 15 ohm not sure what the RJ means though. Not sure what rating that would be... check it with a multimeter. If it's 15ohm instead of 15kohm, then it won't work

the resistor i got tldv8 is the same size as your plug.

Here is another pic to show how small it is,thats the transistor on the $2 coin.I got all the parts off Dick Smiths for $1.17 .... Damn!! i only threw the leftover resistors in the rubbish a while back !!!..they come in packs of five.

I simply printed out the list of parts off Steve's webpage and took it to Dick Smiths and said,I'm a Welder,be a good lad and fetch these.. If you can't find the bits i could get them up here in Jafaland and post them.

ok i looked at the bugman site and have realised that my resistor i have is 15 ohm not 15k ohm.
i ordered the 15k ohm off dse now and they are in a pack of 5 for about 50 cents.
they look like your cylinder ones tldv8 with the coloured rings around them.
so hopefully i'll be trying it out soon.
what setting on the multi meter do i use to check the ohm's there is a heap of bloody setting on it to choose from.

Try the setting with the little ohm symbol (google it), and the 20kohm (red in pic) range. To check the one you've got, try either the 200ohm (blue in pic) or whatever is closest.

You need it on a Ohm setting (Horse shoe symbal) greater than 15k, probably 20k or 200k I would guess would be your closest setitng.

Where abouse did you get your connectors from or did you just wire it in?

i am just wiring it in.
TLDV8 made his own with plugs , not sure where he got them from.
i've just put the switch under the right hand side of the seat on the start of the undertray.
i have a hugger on so no rain or crap gets up there and the switch is discrete.

tried the resistor i have and on the meter it reads

on 200k no reading
on 20k 0.01
on 2 k .015
on 200 15.6

so i have definatly got the wrong one for what i need.

Death INC did the TRE mod for my K4 gixxer and Duc Gurl's TLS...not possitive on which diodes were used but it took all of 20mins to do both bikes.
Maybe PM him for comfirmation...

Yeah I made a switchable one for my 97 TLS a while back before I wrote it off. In fact I think its still floating around in the boot of my car!

I got the basic TRE kit off http://www.jsdproducts.com/ to get the plugs.

The thing with the SATRE is it uses the neutral light circuit to power the transistor which then switchs the TRE off in neutral.. When you put the bike into gear, the TRE comes back on.

Yes, yes you have... which is a good thing, now you know where the problem is :)

If you want to know what the coloured bands in the resistor mean check this web page.

Dont touch the probes with your fingers while taking high ohms readings.. your body resistance will be measured as well and you will get a lower reading than the truth...
