An interesting little spin on the whole online trading thing.

I was surprised at the reaction (or lack of it) in New Zealand to ebay. It was immediately perceived by kiwis as being solely American - back home we have ebay.co.uk so all listings are in the UK and you don't have to muck about with exchange rates (I bought a car for 700 quid and sold it 2 years later for 1000, great website) - I just wonder what will happen to trademe when ebay decides to enter the market with ebay.co.nz - will it still be worth $900M?

How long before this site takes business away from Trademe?

ebay is badly overpriced. Combined eBay + paypal fees are just horrible.
The problem of trademe vs. eBay are a reflection of problems of US vs. NZ markets - NZ population is just to damn small.

There is a http://www.ebay.co.nz . Few use it. Why? Ebay's software is a dog compared to trademe's. People have voted with their feet, see how few vehicles there are on ebay.co.nz compared to trademe, for example.

ebay.co.nz vs trademe.co.nz will be played out again in australia, there was no way that (APN?) was going to make back their $700mil in NZ. They bought it to take to aussie where ebay is the market leader.

Fairfax bought Trademe because the actual and projected cash flows in New Zealand alone made it a good investment. Nowhere in the world has an up-and-coming trading site toppled the incumbent. This is why Fairfax won't go head-to-head with ebay in Australia.

Interesting. The thing that Trademe doesn't have is a wanted to buy section. In case you ask - Yes, I have suggested it.

Yep, I've considered writing my own before... it would be pretty easily, it's the business model that's harder.

They used to have them, they took it away because people were abusing it, instead of starting (and paying for) a new classified style wanted to buy (was $2.50) each time they wanted something new they just relisted there old ad with modified details.

There already is. Trademe is already way way ahead of ebay in nz, too far for it to claw back. NZ is too small a market for ebay compared to asia, us, uk etc. I buy quite a bit of stuff off ebay in the states, get quite good prices on most things and more and more people are shipping internationally.

Wanted to buy: try the new look T&E online.

Ebay was in NZ before TradeMe started. Better product won though (for a change).
