Blenheim police are puzzled by a fatal incident in which five
motorcyclists crashed on an icy bridge on Saturday morning.
One rider in the pack managed to get over the Wairau River bridge on
State Highway Six, but his five companions all lost control of their
motorcycles.
One of them, a 47-year-old Nelson man, was hit by an oncoming van
which burst into flames. He died in hospital.
Senior Constable Russell Smith says police will investigate why the
motorcyclists all lost traction at the same time.
