View Full Version : North Island: Dannevirke - Sunday August 27th - Sugilites Excellent Adventures Series - Ride 1.

I'm running in the Team Richard Leong Racing/Hewitt's Motorcycles Kawasaki ZX10R and feel like some company, the more the merrier.

The meeting place will be Hewitt's Motorcycles, Main St Dannevirke at 12:15 to 12:30 pm.
Make sure you turn up with a full tank of gas, as petrol stations are rare things where we are going, as is traffic!
Also bring a full stomach as winter day rides are to short for multiple cafe stops.

I will supply a ride route map to one and all complete with merging points along the way. All sizes and types of bikes and rider skill levels are welcome. Just because I race does not mean it is going to be a MotoGP qualifying session!:nono:

Dannevirke is handily central to Hawkes Bay, Waiarapa and the Manawatu. I already have interested riders from Wellie on board too. This has great potential to be a classic ride folks! :woohoo:

The types of roads I like are corners, corners and more corners.
Do you like straights with the odd gentle bend? This will not be the ride for you. (look at my location)

If the weather looks shoddy, all bets are off.
I will make the final weather call at 8am on the day in this thread.

This will be the 1st in a series of Sugilite's Excellent Adventure series of rides I will be organizing in conjunction with other knowlegible and respected local riders from around the country over the upcoming months.

The ball is rolling huh? Lucky bugger you've got some great roads to meander over around Dannevirke:yes: spent a bit of time there based at Tamaki River Rd & got to venture around the surrounding countryside a bit plus all the good backroads between the gorge through to Wanganui.

Hope you have a good weekend for it :niceone:

Right you lot!
Above posts of support like T.W.R's are sweet as. (he is after all my Central South Island road ride consulatant!)

But any soft cocked, inverted nipple types who lamely post they cannot make it due to running out of panty liners, washing the pet dog, stubbed little toe, "insert lame excuse here" reason will be red repped by me, because at the end of the day :whocares: It is a waste of good thread space in my opinion!

At the end of the day this thread is for people that just wanna ride, Yeah Baby!!! :Punk:

I agree...I get tired of threads full of 'I wish I could come along but...'. Ill be there and am praying for good weather.

You know that some of these softcock sportsbikes riders will be in ruin by the time they get to Dannevegas eh Sugi? ;)

Yeah Skel, I was thinking the same, I'll take it easy on ya's, it won't be to epic...maybe I'll have an advanced loop in mind for those that are keen near the end of the main ride

I am pulling some strings to get down there for a blast but unfortunately I have run out of panty liners.:dodge:
Oh and with the cold weather there's no worries about nipples being inverted.

YEEE HAAA, the Wellie crew sure are stepping up to the plate!
Come on, where are the Waiarapa, Manawatu and Hawkes Bay crews?
Remember all levels of riders will enjoy this ride and with maps showing meeting points, no one should get lost or left behind.

I made a sighting run today on the 750 and quite frankly, WOW! We are in for a party. :woohoo:
I've allowed for the fact many will have put on a few KM's just to get to the starting point, so i cut out the torture loops i initially had in mind, though maybe I could do a advanced hardcore loop after the main ride if anyone is interested?.
The road the ride follows flows really nicely and the last quarter of the ride really opens up so people can relax.
I've found a Cafe/Gas station I never knew existed before today (it's open on sunday too) and it sells beers for those that like a quiet tipple. They sell burgers n that as well.
I noticed a few pubs along the way as well, so I will take more notice of how far along they are in tomorrows final sighting run in case a 2nd stop is required. The loop itself is well under 2 hours. (It is dawning on me not everyone likes to drain a tank of gas before stopping for a break!)

I have 99% completed the ride map, so pm me your E-mail addresses if you want a sneak preview. I will not be posting it on this thread. As mentioned I will have copies to hand out at the initial meeting point.

Hmm just an observation. I thought you stated the ride wasn't for soft cocks.

Haven't recieved a copy of the route yet, sent a PM with my e-mail addy last night. May do it in reverse with cowboyz, as he works (well otherwise detained on meeting at the inital start time) Sunday morning and met up with the rest of ya in the arvo hopefully.

Edit- I hope it turns out to be a good one for everyone who participates btw.

Bro, have you ever piloted 170 HP hyper bikes on wet roads, it requires far to much concentration to have fun, I just rode in the pissing rain from Wellington to Shannon before it stopped, lt was wheelspining even at running in speeds :gob:
Having said that, I'll still do the ride if it's only showers.

I just checked the weather and it looks A LOT better than before:yes:
It is sposed to be fine now.
I may have a plan B ride on the Manawatu side of the gorge just in case though.
Check this thread on Sunday after 8am.

Wellie crew, looks at this stage best to come up state highway one.

I understand what you are saying. The road through to Wimbolton certainly has a few slippery bits and moss/lichen can be an issue this time of year also.

Thats why my "real" road bike is my 17 year old ZXR750, at least it has the decency to let me know when I'm accelerating! The 10 can climb 20 kmh with no discernible change in exhaust note!

Enjoyed the company, pies, and even managed to show a CBR600 a clean pair of heels on Gerty  So she can't be in too bad a shape tuning wise. Thinking about it, it may just have been because of the bad case of flatulance.:shake:

Sugilites and Uncle B's bikes were awesome. Certainly bought me up to date with current m/c performance. Nice blokes. Had 4 riders from Dannivirke along who asked about KB. Unfortunately BMW lost it early in the ride. I hope you feel better soon gal. Sugilite is going to transport her and the Bandit by van down to Wellywood tonight. So if anyone is at hand that can help fix it, mainly cosmetic by the looks.

Would have thought more of the welly crowd where going to turn up. Oh well, maybe next time.

Had Gary there and guess what? Yes it rained.

Topped off with a quiet meander down what can only be describe as a country lane with a smidgin of gravel. Very nice peice of road and no I'm not sharing it's location.:shake:

Not a bad day. Pace was alot higher than i would tour at.Good for a change to see what my bike can do. Not for me on a weekly basis Im afriad. I prefer the touring pace. (Cruiser rider in the closet) .Always entertaining to see the big boys out to play. Even if it is for only a few seconds at a time.

Excellent hidden road somewhere up there (not sure if I could find that agaiin)

There's Uncle Bulgaria, Wellington, Orinoco and even Madam Chartlet....

Bummer about BMW binning, :pinch: hope you're ok and the bandit too. Seems to have been a weekend of it.

Good on ya Bonez for showing the 600 dude what an older bike is capable of. Flatulence aside, to ride the old girls well takes some excellent skills.

So on the next adventure in the series, I will definatley be a starter.

Heyya crew,
Well my ex is AWOL so I had to stay here for my kids as against taking BMW home.
BMW is layed up in my room, so I'll be across the road on the couch looking after the kids tonight!
It is her 1st bin on the road, she is ok, has bumps and bruises and a nasty swollen hand, and no doubt a few more injuries will come to light tomorrow. Will take her home then while the kids are at school.

The rest of the ride went well, it rained a little and the road was wet for a fair way. Uncle B and I swapped bikes at one stage and I had his tapped right out at 100 kph on one straight :innocent:

It was really good to meet Cowboyz and Bonez, great guys and dedicated riders to be sure:Punk:

Yep, that secret road is a lot of fun, naturally I had to use those Men in Black memory erase gadgets so the guys cannot pass on the exact location  The price of admission was 3.5 km's of gravel, but was decidedly worth it, talk about character! It leads on to a another road with a series of straights, as the ZX10R had more than 1000 clicks on the clock, I opened the taps, HOLLY HELL the front was coming up over the slightest bump at near redline in top, never before has 100 kmh felt so fast :innocent:

I waved goodbye to Bonez, Cowboyz and Uncle B at Dvirke, and then it was off home to do the domestic Dad thing. Poor BMW, if the bike had not done enough damage to her, the home made sugilite burgers will surely have finished her off!

Anyways, apart from the unfortunate bin, the 1st Sugilite adventure went great!

Look forward to seeing you on the next one MattRSK, I did wonder why you had not shown.

Rock on Sugilite's excellent adventures round 2, It will be a Wellies, Waiarapa one and I'll be back on the 750

Excellent ride thanks Sugilite......you've got some wicked roads up there to free the spirit and open her up to 100kph :innocent:....note: will have to do some more 'touring' up that way.

Good to meet some new riders, Cowboyz, BMW & Bonez.

Even tho the road was wet for most of the way it didn't dampen the ride for me. I got to go on some primo back country roads seldom visited by the likes of us......might pay to keep them quiet Sugilite.

Ride home was very cold and the tinted visor made piloting difficult and as I was meandering my way home I got 'challenged' by a boy racer in a little white blinged out, lowered, tinted, turboed (could hear the 'pish' on gear changes) with the chromed 3 inch drain pipe out the back and what looked like last years christmas tinsel hanging from the mirror.
Anyways, he cut me off at a roundabout then passed three cars just before a blind corner.....wanker, I thought....so I slowly filtered my way through the traffic and snuck up on him as there was a long passing lane up ahead. He now knew I was there and started to winding up his toy then nailed it at the passing lane getting rid of the car he'd just been tailgating for the last 5 kays.
All I remember is wazzing past him at a great rate of knots to which he had no reply....TOASTED...big time....poor guy, I don't think he'll be telling his mates how he got completely wasted by a bike...............in third gear.

Thanks Sugilite for a great ride. Can't wait for round 2.

Hope BMW feels better soon and gets her bike sorted ready for the next ride.

Nice ride . Wimbledon Pub was my limit for the second ride in a row now. I used the same excuses as last time for not going on.

Just after the guys left on the rest of the journey the MotoGP came on Prime and I watched it with the Dutch Publican who told me a bit about the DutchGPs he went to in the sixties.

That road to the pub is shite (and not becuase it was raining either) maybe one day I'll get to do the rest as it would have to improve to justify riding to it.

BMW shame about the off. I actually though the pace was a bit fast for the conditions.

Don't give up your racing career to become a weather forecaster Suglite and check the lense on the camera you used.

I hope you ate that ride map when you got home, I'd hate for it to fall into the wrong hands

I looove it when boy racers take ya on, I wait till they reach their top speed, then waste em, it is a much more crushing defeat that way :devil2:

I quite like that road! Though it does suck when it's wet, pity we did not get to it just a little sooner, it would have been dry!

For the record, I was 3rd to last in the group when the prang happened, who was setting the pace at that point?

Hope you had your left arm "tied" behind you back as you went past.

For the particualy arrogant boy racers, I used to let the pillion reach around, take the throttle and blow them away!:done:

Geez bugger that, hopefully weds I go back. Trouble is I'm a legal secretary - first time I've ever one finger typed! too slow.

Told you I was on a mission U. B - however mine ended in mission impossible. Obviously had too much sleep, actually the body seems to have seized - I wonder if this is what old age will be like?? I think the head hitting the road may have killed off a few more brain cells, can't afford to lose any more.
Will ring insurance company and see whether it is worth claiming. Dr asked me what speed I was doing - had enough brains left to think um 100 k area - aarh about 90 k. I was slowing down - just didn't mention that it was when i was kissing the tarmac!

Good on ya Bonez for showing the 600 dude what an older bike is capable To be honest it was a rather straight bit of road. Pulled the ol fox move of motioning to slow down, 90 degree turn coming up, once I got past him then down a gear or two and awaaay.

I guess the big thing to remember on a ride like this is ride at your own pace. Plenty of assembly points along the way, as with this run, is always good. Looking fwd to the next one.
