Hi All,

This is the next in a series of learner friendly rides aimed mainly at the 250cc riders on learner or restricted licences but all responsible riders are welcome.

On the day we will probably have two groups, a faster group and a learner group, may even plan an extended ride for the faster group so we all get to lunch at the same time.

A nice relaxed day for those less experianced riders to get a taste of riding out of the city with a few other bikers,

Route to be revealed on the day.

Meeting 9.30AM BP Botany. Sunday the 10/9/06.

Please register below if you will be attending to give us an idea of numbers,

Hope to see you there!

Can you give us an estimate on duration? ( This is the weekend immediately after the trackday on the 8th, so I'll have been away Friday, home sometime Saturday, then out on the bike again 9.30am Sunday. Got to keep my normally supportive wife happy too!!) Of course I could just not come... but after yesterday, I'm real keen and I think having some slightly more experienced riders on the ride, who still remember clearly what it's like to be a newbie is of value too!

Ahhh familiar family obligations - say no more
:msn-wink: With asians its a whole new level of hurt! I'm suprised your missus takes it in her stride so calmly. Good to see the asian contingent well represented (probably be accused of having the dosh to splash out on fancy rides and not caring about trading in a bike for 5 grand on the next one! :devil2: :mobile: )

But the ride, I will be there with bells on next time! And a lubed chain (as pointed out by Warlock :innocent:)

I am real lucky. Imagine returning from a ride on the back of a mate's bike, with another mate riding yours because you lost your license for 28 days, effective immediately!! The guys left real quick expecting me to face the music! She took it all in stride... dropped me off and picked me up from work when necessary etc

As far as asian dosh goes, like you I grew up here and earnt every cent I have here. What I spend on bikes is minute compared to what I've spent on cages in the past..... Good to meet you yesterday!!

A very good attitude Leong. :)

Yep, your wife must be one of a very select few. I seem to have scored one of those too but she does seem to get a little jealous of what she calls my Blue Mistress. (That being my blue and white GSX1400 of course)

Still, when out and about you are inclined to think about getting home at a reasonable hour even when you would like to stay and yak longer or are having fun. The pressure to be back on time is always there in a way, but I suppose that's part of the responsibility of having another half.

She sounds like a good lady mate :)

Cor blimey - you got a real corker there pal! My brother has been out in the dog box for less than that, and he doesn't (read : not allowed) ride two wheels of freedom anymore!

Shure she isn't a closet biker wanting to come out? :done:

Yeah, 3rd generation kiwi-born chinee-man - though my size and dark colouration means I've been mistaken for a chinese person...twice! People pick me as (choose your impression) :wari:

Yeah, I'm on the road at last! Figuratively speaking of course. At the moment I'm in the carpark going around in circles and loops practicing breaking; emergency breaking (definitely not bike breaking - touch wood) Starting; gear changing; leaning into corners; accelerating; decelerating; figure eights; indicating etc. I have a session booked with John Wright on Saturday. Other than that it's practice. I'm going to try and get onto the RRRS Course mid next month too. I hear it's all good. Other thatn that I'm practicing each and every day.

Well see closer to the time.

nice work man...the courses sound good...what are they about??general defensive driving??

i may have a mate who is gonna - be getting his first bike next week (vt250) - come along. He will be very very fresh on the bike so i will prob be hanging right back to giv him tips and keep him company. It is not confirmed whether he will come along (or whether i'll have a bike for that matter!!:shit: ) but it should be a very learner friendly pace if it does happen.

Hey Guys!

Well I got back from Scouting out the Route for the run next sunday, and I have to say that it is an Awesome ride, I think it was about 136km each way, so 272km total estimated.
It has long straights and fast corners, a bit of towny stuff, lots of tight twisties, forests, ridges, ummmm cows? And maybe even a chrome headlight bolt somewhere on the way ;) (we did see 3 speed cameras today though, so fast guys, you have been warned!)
I got a few nice pics, but of course I cant show you all, cause that would spoil the surprise for next sunday!

Even though the weather didnt look great today, it was a bit damp and spitty starting out, but turned more into a misty low cloud then rain as such, and by lunch was just a few clouds overhead.

I got the (motor)bike back on fri afternoon, havent taken it for a decent ride yet, but it definately has been given a small power hike with a large improvement to the refinement of the power delivery with the work....gotta learn how to ride again though, as it feels completely different.

Drove MY VTR home from work for the first time yesterday, it took me about an hour and a ...half(?) All the way down Great South Road. I was overtaken on the inside (when I was in the left hand lane) twice and nearly hedged off the road by a car overtaking who didn't want to cross the double yellow lines once.

But apart from those minor irritations, it went well.

Then this morning, I rode it back to work. I took the motorway for the first time from Ramarama, but got off in Manurewa as the traffic was getting too thick and stop-starty. From there it was GSRoad again back to Penrose. I found motorway traffic quite good when the traffic wasn't so thick; other vehicles tended to change lanes around me as opposed to pushing past in my lane. I thought it would be a different story if the traffic was a bit thicker.
It seems to me going at 70 km/hr on the motorway with everyone else doing 110-120 is a rather stupid option. I might just avoid the motorway as best I can.

(I crept up to 100km/hr for about 5-6 seconds to see how it felt... and it felt like I was a sail on a ship in a gale. Almost like I could get blown off the back of me bike!

Lots of opinions to be had concerning the 70kph rule Searchin'

How heavy are you by the way? I'm 90kg and I get blown all over the place on the Newmarket overpass - very scary - brave of you to attempt the commute so early in you motorcycle career but I suppose I started doing it after a week. Mind you in week 3 I got knocked off by a people carrier.

best of luck - stay safe. Get a Mentor if you can.

In my opinion the Harbour bridge and that Newmarket bridge are the two most dangerous parts of the motorway in terms of wind gusts, If its windy and you arent sure, get off and go through newmarket then get back on, a 5 minute detour might just save your skin someday.
The bridges from panmure to pakuranga can also be pretty bad.
Alternatively, if you have no choice, look for a large truck/van/anything largeish and try to get in its wind shadow, i.e. on the other side of the wind and to the side (a little lagging). Look for signs as you come up to exposed roads like trees blowing to determine which direction the wind is coming from.

At the end of the day, people might get a bit annoyed at you doing 80kph to match speed with a truck across a bridge, but its better then being blown into a barrier.

Well despite what you alledge, I'm happy with my Honda.

Well, I went for a bit of a tour today. I took the bike home from tech in Mt Albert. From home I went down to Maungataphere(sp?), back to Pokeno, out to Port Waikato, back home through Pukekohe and Bombay; then out through Clevedon to Maraetei(sp?); and back home.

I'm all set and looking forward to Sunday, provided I can get a baby sitter. I'll be riding with the slowies naturally.

for those who are more gas concious amongst us,
if you ride a Bandit like myself you will probably need a tank and a half from botany for the run, I normally fill up with 98 at Botany, there was no 98 at the lunch place and i was almost empty on the homeward stretch, so i settled for 6 bucks of 96 to get me to civilization.

If you ride a Hyosung GT250R or a Honda VTR250 however you will make it on one tank as the trip is around 300km I believe. Fub@r - you'll still have enough to get you to Wellington and back!

Hope for your sake there are no hills on Sunday coz you know that the V-twin engines don't care if it's all uphill - low rev torque baby yeah!

Don't stress about the hungry mouths once they are hungry enough the hunting instinct kicks in automatic.

All so helps controll the local wild cat population, so you can justify spending all that money on your bike by saying that you are doing your bit for the enviroment after all wild cats kill native birds.

Having read the ATNR thread - do you think these threads are the source of Police intelligence on the rides or is it locals complaining?

It will be funny if we're tracked on Sunday because we keep it learner friendly and legal and would be a waste of the Police time.

Hooners take note - Ride in the opposite direction from us on Sunday....But of course we haven't told anyone where we're going! hahahaha

I have some ideas that will ensure we lose no licences anyway - I'll be at the back obeying the law (70kmh with an L plate on) so that takes any following Mazda 6 out of the equation.

Shame Swanny won't be there - seems a colourful charater.

Yes well these rides have always been about getting beginners experiance out on the roads in a safe legal environment and promoting safe and responsible riding, not really much to catch, if the weather looks iffy as i suspect it will, we will probably go a bit more north where the roads are safer with less rural muck on them. nothing slipperier then effluent on wet back roads.

Give bling to some other deserving posters then - you can give out 10 blings in 24 hours but I think you can bling the same person only once you've blinged another 3...or something like that - go searching there's a thread about it somewhere - I pored through all that stuff in the first 4 months or so while I lurked without posting....on the edge of the circle of firelight.

I could say so much right now ... but i'm not going too :P .. there is nothing wrong with the hyo bag and the 1100 i passed in traffic this afternoon will testify to that ... mu ha ha .. my issue is plain and simple .. the boys in blue are wasting their time on enforcing a law that is an ass .. and we should do something about it ... i'm reading a forum post at the moment about the 70k limit .. everyone agrees it's stupid, but no one is doing anything to get it changed .. this boggles the mind .. the fact that the guy in front (sorry Mav) wants to be a cop, will not stop him from enforcing the law .. it's the LAW .. my old mans a cop, has been since before i was born, so i know a little bit about the police... here's the deal ... once i'm finished reading the thread .. i'll be posting a comment of my own.. i aim to present a petition to parliment to lift the 70km limit on a learners. nothing more ... we can get into the power to weight stuff later .. 70k makes us a road hazzard and the law needs to be changed.

Well in seriousness I think trying to get it 'lifted' would be a waste of time, though perhaps i'm just being pedantic over your choice of words. Making it condition specific towards something could probably be a better bet. But i'll support it...

In all honesty I think (and I know theres a similar train of thought for you older guys, albiet for a different reason) making me legally unable to ride over 70kph anywhere on the road for 6months is rediculous, and I know you older guys feel the same considering young kids can get such fast cars etc no problem.

Most of the roads I ride on have 80 kmp/h limits or are twisty enough that sitting at 80-100 kmp/h along the short in-between straights isn't really a problem.

So I think a sensible move would be to push for an increase in the limit by 10 kmp/h, which would mean most people would travel at 89 kmp/h or less and be less of a hazard to other motorist on the open road.

Most car's travel at 90 - 100 kmp/h anyway so it'd only be marginally slower.

Wow! devoting 6 cars to follow a bunch of newbies (like myself)?? I say it's a privilege! Considering the amount of violent crimes at the moment.

If this turned out to be the case on the day, we should get evidence like video, etc., then put it up to the media - imagine the headline "Police Wasted Resources on Learners, Crime Wave Hits New Zealand" blah blah blah... and let the opposition parties do its work.

Don't need to mate - I'll be there - Will tell you all about my day job on Sunday.

I can see a compromise though that will save everyone from embarassment - it will free up 4 units for true enforcement. All it would require is 2 police HP units - one as vanguard and one as rear guard. They could make themselves known to us at Botany BP - they could therefore protect us against a 130kph shunt from a 15 year old Learner in a 300bhp Skyline and could also ensure that the Learner group does not exceed 70kph AND SAVE VALUABLE TAXPAYERS MONEY.

Everyone wins - we can safely ride within the legal constraints (which we would have done anyway!) and they get to reduce the resource for this issue by 67%.

I should have gone into Politics instead of media eh?

Ixion
8th September 2006, 22:51
Of course, one could try actually REQUSTING the cops to come along. To offer instruction and advice etc. Thus making them perversely certain that they should be somewhere else.

And of course, if you really ARE going to be legal, someone whould whisper to the plod that the learner ride is just a front for a big race, and they (the plod) need to get every car in Auckland out onto it. Then I shall tootle off in the exact opposite direction confident that no cops are going to be around to bother me.

Ms Crashe incidentally is designated as KB Offical Decoy.

Just to re-iterate this is a Learner friendly ride - Maverick at the head me at the rear - we have every intention of keeping the ride legal and we will endeavour to encourage everyone in our group to ride legally and observe the conditions of their licences. Each rider is, however, responsible for obeying the law themselves.

Faster riders are welcome to meet us at BP Botany and then make their own way at their own pace to the lunch meet but the spirit of this ride is to encourage people on Learner and restricted licences to escape the confines of the city and busy traffic.

We won't get experienced unless we ride.

Police asistance would be greatly appreciated if it is offered - co-operation is more constructive than confrontation.

Perhaps I should come along and notify the Police of my doing so earlier in the morning. If I fail to stop they'll bring the Helicopter in and if I follow the same route as you guys the downward force produced by the Choppers rotors should be suffecient enough to dry out the roads.

Just a thought.

Me and Mav will still be at Botany BP 9:30am in the hope it clears a bit - if we judge it's still too pissh-poor to ride we'll resort to Plan B....which involves food and conversation.

Not gonna PM my address to anyone coz I don't want people turning up just to come to my house. The invitation is strictly as an alternative to the ride in inclement weather coz it would be a pain in the arse for some poor sod to come across the bridge in shit weather only to turn round and go back again.

So meet at Botany BP 9:30 and we'll decide then.

Cheers,

Hunua weather report: 8.57am

Squally showers with intermittant patches of sunlight; strong wind gusts delivering the odd patch of drizzle;

Cold.

Still; better than yesterday!

Well frankly, invite him along I say. If they came on their bikes, we might get some insight and schooling because as much as the 70km/hr rule may suck on the motorway; we are learner riders after all and this is the n00b ride after all; and 70km/hr IS in fact the law (still) after all. So I won't be going above 70km/hr and a biker cop who wanted to share some of the wisdoms of his profession would be - hesitantly - welcome.

Where were you ladies when the weather was good ;)

No motorbike games unless someone brings 'em - the plan is to go for a ride on the bikes - resorting to PS2 only if weather is piss poor...and it seems to be clearing.

In the event that we call off due to weather only those who turn up prepared to ride will be invited to BBQ (this is primarily aimed at those having to make an effort to get to Botany from Whenuapai or North Shore etc.)

Anyone prepared to ride with us noobs is welcome at my house.

Wow thks for da offer! You're welcome at my place too, however, note that I only have a 21" TV and no PS2 or Xbox.

Like everyone else, I have my share of excuses; Too wet, too dry, bike problem, managed to scored lastnight and no mojo left for riding, cat died of old age and am still mourning, etc etc. :p

Anyway, lets talk about the next ride... Mav? Anyone?

Well, as predicted by Mav's Weather Genie (tm) we had a beautiful day out on the bikes - didn't think the weather would last into the late afternoon so we took a short trip to Kaiaua (again) - pictures attached - including a message for those who said they were coming but didn't because of the ...erm weather. Allergic to sunshine obviously!

Great time was had - no licences lost and Mav reckons he saw a policeman but I didn't.

Lil Sel came along without her bike but did a fantastic job of preventing any fast cars from shunting us up the rear!:scooter:

We would also like to mention that gijoe1313 has managed to kill yet ANOTHER L plate on his mighty Hornet. A small ceremony was held when we got back to mine.

so is it safe to assume the hellraiser's "very reliable source" is full of shit?

McJim

Not necessarily WarlockNZ - it's just that the combination of weather and the fact that the group comprised just 3 sober and responsible riders with 4 wheeled support vehicle meant they probably looked and decided that it would be a waste of resource.

It was a waste of resource in the beginning ... i can say so much right now, but my god, the fact that the police waste resource on law abiding, "responsible riders" just grinds my gears. whats the reason? .. i'd love a member of the force to answer that.

Or perhaps Hellraiser alone is full of shit?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what organisation the Police use to train their motorcycle units, or is it an internal department?

I've read in some places that the Officers are sent overseas for training.

Please limit personal abuse to playful banter - any accusations that people are full of shit MUST be backed up by certification that the insulted party has indeed been suffering from constipation for some time - failure to produce such a document will require the offender to perform a humiliating forfeit so you have been warned - :Playnice:

Fark, just finished my slave shift at the old's takeaways - after I left Jim's place (with gear, bike and butthole intact) I scooted to my brothers place to watch the rugger but being the nancy boy, I fell asleep on the couch. Got woken up at 5pm to go and work!

Anyhows, I don't care! I went for a nice ride courtesy of Weather Genie (that is the shizzle!) and we did the legal, heck I even had the L-plate survive the ride to Jim's place!

Nice to see Lil Sel turn up in her cage even though we pestered her to go and get her two wheels, she would'nae budge! Thanks for carting my tank bag after we got to Kaiaua!

Hmm eats was okay, in my professional opinion, they're a good outfit even though they can't spell Scallops! (Scollops) I had the wedges, gurnard, corn fritter, corn toasted sandwich and a ginger beer. Very nice and then we took the piccies! I sure I saw a bird there somewhere! ;)

Anyhow the ride was kewl, Jim got pissed off when Maverick revved the tits off his bike and into his face fueling up at Clevedon  I hit a swarm of bees and now know how a monkey in a spin dryer feels (surprised and a little pissed off!). Lil Sel had an amusing moment when her lowered suspension on the cage bottomed out when she was filming us on her mobile phone (music, jolt and a loud ****** expletive was heard!)

Great time, lovely weather and excellent experience riding in the mildly wet sections (good test for the gear).

Kiwibiker? More like KiwiPikers to those who didn't get off their chuffs and tootle on down to BP Botany! :headbang: 'nuff said :done:
