If you are looking for a bike and you see this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.asp?id=67827464) DO NOT BUY IT.
I showed some interest and was told by the vendor that it had only had light damage - "a couple of scratches and a wee dent in the tank". I did the right thing and got the history of the bike (Thanks to the buying a used bike (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=26572) thread). I spoke to the previous owner. It turns out that this bike was parked at right angles into a ditch, the rider went over the handlebars and into a field suffering only minor injuries. For those of you that know him this is Shayne Hawtin's (sp) bike. The bike was not as lucky as the rider and suffered major damage -frame, forks, fairing etc... I'm happy I spent $25 on a VIR (https://www.vir.co.nz/?gclid=CIWyxfmC9YYCFT11EAod_WoTWw) certainly saved me from spending anything on this bike.

I was going to put this in online trading but it's more of a Rant

I would think that if it got a WOF it would have been repaired!??

That's the one Darkman.

It can get a WOF and re-certified but that doesn't mean that it's any good. This bike was written off for good reason and the only thing that should be sold on are the parts that aren't stuffed.

Does anyone even know what year it is ?..... The Trade Me auction says 97 TLS.The bike in the ditch is a 98 unless it had crashed previously and had the fairings replaced.TLS's are good bikes, you just need to know what to look for since a lot have been down the road by now...I personally would not touch a 97 TLS. 1998 is better (Gearbox/Wider ouput shaft bearing) but from 99 they got quite a few updated parts off the TLR..Clutch/Gearbox/Oilpump/Windage tray...fwiw

Colapop, you should ask the seller some rather pointed questions.

If you must buy from a private party, insist that you be able to take the bike to a reputable dealership to be assessed and inspected. A few dollars spent now could save you heaps of money and trouble in the future.
I sorta already knew that at the time I brought the RG, and I regret not doing so. It was cosmetically wooing which lead to me buying it, however I quickly ruined that. Now I'm left with a shitty looking and performing bike (that would've appreciated in value if I didn't crash it.... lucky me)

not so true col....I bike will be writen off if the sum of part needed to fix it will cost more than the value of a bike....when fixing a bike after a crash bike shops do not go looking for second hand parts in a quote....so rims, forks, and fairings will easily cost 9k + so the bike will be written off....now if the owned went about buying second hand parts to repair and on sell....it could have cost buggar all....I would love to have a look over that bike....or get a another TL nut to do so....coz its probally okay....takes a massive impact to bend a chassis...even forks will take a big hit and still be straight...

Look at the photo's (in the ditch) it looks like they did take a big hit. But you're right when writing off a bike bike shops replace all parts with new. If you're handy with a wrench you can get crashed bikes back on the road. and safe for a fraction of the price.

The bike went into the ditch at right angles with still a bit of speed left on it. (nice superman jump Shayne BTW) The forks were bent.

Best effort I've seen for a panic stop at ~200kph.

BTW, the darkish spot to the left of centre in the second photo is where Shyne landed.

Replacing the fairings etc would rite off the bike.
Looks 98ish - has 2000 fairings

Yep TL it's the same guy (seller)

I agree that there are bikes that are written off with little more than cosmetic damage. In this case I spoke the guy who crashed it and was told how badly it was broken. Also spoke to 2 bike shops (TSS and Motomart) both who know the bike and rider and both noted surprise that this bike was for sale given the extensive damage it suffered.
The ad this guy is running is different to the first one in the admissions that he is making compared to when I spoke to him. Fatjim was riding with this person at the time of the accident (I'm not sure if it was his fault...)
