Shouldn't files created in Openoffice be able to be open and viewed with MS Word?

My neighbours are using it. But the documents they create can't be opened by anybody else. Young James just emailed me a science project that he has spent hours working on and when I open it in Word it just contains crapola.

He needs to save it in Word format.
Click File, Save As, and change the File type to .DOC

I think he said he did that already. But I'll double check. Another option may be
Tools -> Options -> Load /Save -> General -> Default file format
I think it's close to his bed time, so may have to leave this until tomorrow...

If it turns up garbled then he might have to try saving as a pdf if it is only needed to be viewed (read only) by other people.
