View Full Version : Rimutaka bin earns a month off work
Steam

I fell off up the rimutakas today, ouch.
I broke some bones in my hand, the left thankfully. lots of bruises too. No work for a month says the doctor!!!! (secretly pleased about that last part.)
The trusty combat GN is not too damaged, just an indicator off & some big scratches.
I took a corner too fast, made that basic newbie mistake of focussing on the corner instead of where i wanted to go. i could have made it round, but just hauled on the brakes, locked up & went down. dumb.
A police car was the first on the scene, with 4 cadet cops in it. They checked me & the bike out & called an ambulance before I told them I was ok to ride. They looked a bit doubtful but let me go & they took off.
Then I found the mudguard was jammed against the wheel & wouldn't turn, tried to pry it off with a gorse branch, but then some guys on Kawasaki k1000's stopped with tools & helped me lever some clearance. Thanks dudes.
Then I rode 50km with a broken hand to Wellington Hospital A & E, (clutchless shifting) because I knew if I went to Hutt hospital, it would be hard to get home & with the bike. My brother lives just by Wellington Hospital, & he picked it up after I was injected with painkillers & put in a cast.
Dri-rider gear is now stuffed, but it did its job & will now be kept as a trophy of my first crash. No Great KBer ride for me on Sept 1st now.(oh, maybe, i forgot it's Oct first).

Sorry to hear about the bin and the lost of riding time! How the heck did you manage the 50Ks with a broken hand? Guess that makes you a real biker now! Yeah, I've done that - damn target fixation and not turning the head. Let's hope your ride gets fixed up and you get back to riding ASAP! :scooter:
Keep us updated with pics and how your're recuperating!
BTW, how fast were you going?

Unfortunate, not dumb. It's a perfectly natural reaction to going in too fast, just wrong. Also, it's a GN250 with the stock front tyre, yes? A famously bad tyre.
Still, bummer. Work won't be all that happy either.
BTW, complete aside, does anyone have any opinions on biking with snowboard wrist guards on? Like, other than it looking ghey ... which, no doubt, was the charge levelled at helmets once ... can anyone think of any good reasons why it would not work? It seems we're getting quite a lot of broken wrists on the takas.

I would say it would make twisting the throttle a little difficult.

Was going about 50 when I hit the tarmac, thankfully just 10kph when I slid into the barrier. The corner was a 70ish, but not for me!

Cor I thought I was mad riding half a km with 3 broken bones in my hand.
That was from a GN250 bin too, although mine involved some fuckknuckle pulling out on me.

Sadly it is my wanking hand, I changed over to being a leftie years ago so I could use the computer mouse better when surfing porn sites. Damn! I have been so loaded up with Codeine I hadn't even thought about it.
But that's probably too much info for y'all.

Never mind, get a couple of ribs removed on ACC and you'll be able to give yourself a blowjob - bad luck on the bin - I've binned due to inexperience too but a couple of decades binning mountain bikes at 70kph has taught me how to hit the grit.
Get well soon.
