View Full Version : What a wonderful double standard

HOLY FUCK, NOW I'M ANGRY
I just watched some self righteous "female" activist on tv, gleaming over how she took a men's only barber shop to court to force them to cut women's hair, no doubt at the attractive men's rate. That owner, who opened the shop as a mens only barber shop, is now forced under the human rights act (according to the courts) to accept "women". Even though it is completely irrelevant, it's quite obvious "she" doesn't class "herself" as a "woman":zzzz:
So what you say, who gives a shit? Or maybe you think that's fair and just? There WAS a time when I might have thought along those lines, or more likely not given a flying fuck either way. What then, do you think of this:
Contours - "Where "woman" find strength"
A "woman"'s only club, where the owners started it up for "women" clientele only. How is that different? How the fucking hell is that different? Ok, so IF it were fair, all those super fat fugly "women" need a place to work out where all those icky men don't look at them exercising. Or maybe it's also that all those team switchers want a more condensed viewing environment? Then there's the group of "women" who think they are the fucking shiznit, and would be humiliating themselves by being anywhere where normal, common people are... Do you want to know where all the woman who want to exercise go? To normal bloody gyms. There's tens of thousands of woman who use normal gyms without ever being abducted by nasty dirty men. Do you want to know why? Because woman who are there to exercise, don't fuck around by standing around chatting over how men are barstards and how nice their little "exclusive" club is.
But oh heavenly fuck, smite any man who dare's think he can run a business how he see's fit. Not that I give a shit where the fuck I exercise (at Les Mills), or have my hair cut (at a unisex hair salon), I just find the blatantly obvious double standard rather pathetic.
Is it that only "women" are self conscious? Are "women" the only gender who have the right to choose whether they associate with society or in their discriminatory, double-standards clubs? Do men never want to go somewhere where they (and the business owner) choose to keep exclusive for men? Do fat, fugly men working out feel any different to fat, fugly women? Do men who bat for the other side not have the right to be somewhere they have a condensed viewing environment (NOT that that's the case or even relevant, but it ties back into my first couple of paragraphs).
Ok, so if "women" have the right to run exclusive clubs, then so do men. If "women" don't want to be around the opposite sex and have the right to enforce that, then so do men. Why stop there? If "women's" rights are to enforce that prejudice, then is it different if white people feel honestly uncomfortable in an environment condensed with black people? (white and black distinctions used as a general reference, any & every color/race/creed is implied). So then getting a White's only, Male only club going won't cause offence? What is the difference? What is REALLY the difference? (Don't just think or reply some general statements like "because that's just wrong").
One day (when I'm bored with life, i.e. someday soon) I might go join Contours, and take offence to being turned away, after having my human rights transgressed.

Righto, let me get into this wee debate with you lads...
A few years ago I had to have my hair shaved off due a having a number of large cysts cut out of my head... rather than the dr trying to cut around hair and cut them out and then put in the stitches and then later try to find the stitches in my crop of hair, when it was time to remove all the stitches. As in the past he had trouble when I have had the stitches removed before. It made life easier for the dr as well...
I went into a BARBER shop yep a barber's and asked to have all my head of hair shaved off to a number 1 all over...
Did I have a problem.... nope the old guy asked "Are you sure" I said "Yep shave it off" he got the clippers out and it cost me $10.... had my beanie to wear until I got to my bike and put my helmet on.
So I have no idea what the woman was going on about... as barbers will cut/shave womens hair off...
And my hair grew back....

? I don't understand why these "woman" (NOT you Cath, I'm speaking in line with my first post) have to validate themselves by constantly trying to assert themselves in every way, shape and form! They're not happy with the double standard they've enforced, they have to make certain their point is driven home by these sort of stunts, done only to point out their "superiority" and make sure these double standards are kept that way.
Please don't start the whole woman not being equal to men arguement (again, not you cath :)). It's like the old Apartheid in SA or the treaty farce here... Completely reversing the situation because of transgressions of generations past, does not necessarily fix the matter or make it ok for the present generation. Fuck, there is no matter, I don't see any discriminations at the moment? All my managers at work are women, the prime minister is a women (allegedly), etc...
Besides, this is not about the equality of men to woman (or vice versa), I will not comment on that topic again in this thread. Read my first post again.

In the manner she was speaking, I think she did it on purpose. I think she went in there, knowing that she might have been refused service (Maybe she had heard she would be), and then went off to kick up a stink. Assert herself, thinking she was doing it for the benefit of womankind, as you said.
So, in short, what am trying to say is; it was staged.
Did you know that Rosa Parks, getting on that bus, sitting in the 'wrong' place was staged? A 'set move' to start a chain of events that was, at least in part, planned? It wasn't some random act of defiance.
I imagine this woman feels a little like Rosa now, and I actually think she was correct. The letter and spirit of the law is on her side.
She will be one of very few woman who will feel comfortable going there, let her wear her badge of pride.
Unlike Rosa's stand, going to the barber is a minor battle in a war whose outcome is already decided, at least in New Zealand.
She's no renegade, no earth shaker, she is an attention seeker. And we are giving it to her right now, history is made by those who write it. If we ignore her, she won't even rank a footnote.

I'm in full agreement.... why cant there be male barbers?? a man's style of haircut is generally different to a woman's.... she forgets there are a lot of women only things.. like Contours... where men aren't allowed... but there are "clubs" where women havent been allowed untill recently in auckland too....
i say, if you want a $10 cut.. go to just cuts or the like.... and quit stomping your feet woman.

We have a couple of women only gyms in Nelson, and I don't begrudge women for wanting to have a fitness ,where they don't think they are being perved or leered at, so in return I expect my barbershop to remain a "guys haven". I dont agree, but I do like your sentiment.
Part of being a gentleman is making a woman feel like a lady. Feminists dont want to be ladies. They dont want a man to open the door, pull out their chair, or protect them from "evil" - percieved or real. This is just one aspect of being a gentleman I know, but it is an important part, and one which an increasing number of hairy armpitted man haters dont want.
Their loss, I say.
I'm happy to have feminists as friends, although traditionally we have never seen eye to eye enough to become close friends. I would never see fit to dating a feminist. I much prefer a lady to a woman.

So who's going to join contours?
I do find it funny that so many women complain that there's no good available men, yet so many men look to other ethnic groups for wives.
Could there be a link?
Could it be that many NZ men are tired of hard eyed harpies who's first question is "what do you do"? As in, "how much do you earn?"
I've heard guys complain about this time and again.
And to answer the inevitable question, my wife is a NZ'er, earns more than me and while very succesful in her field, is anything but a harpie.

Instead these ethnic groups you are talking about may be more subtle at finding out the answer to that question than these up front Kiwi gals?? I mean I gather these groups are after financial security after all, and looking to be treated better by kiwi men than their own ethnicity - this would motivate someone to be clever

Do tell: where are these increasing numbers of 'hairy armpitted man haters' of which you speak? The eighties are long past, and 'feminism' has virtually become a caricature and an insult. I sometimes wonder about the paranoid delusions often held by people who think the occasional vociferous nutter speaks for all women who may or may not espouse 'feminism' - whatever it means to them...
I do find it funny that so many women complain that there's no good available men, yet so many men look to other ethnic groups for wives.
HA! You don't think those girls (if by this you are alluding to mail order bride types) are marrying for economic reasons half the time? Maybe they *are* better at giving ageing middle aged guys what they want.
As for the hard faced 'how much do you earn' crap- I don't see that as being a 'feminist' trait at all. Surely that's more of a 'gold digger' thing? I thought the whole point was that a woman should be able to support herself, not leech off some poor guy. Unfortunately, I think this is a dynamic that won't go away as long as guys prefer fake boobs and sweet lies, and as long as the media perpetuates it by promoting this as a valid 'career option'.
*sigh* Aaaaanyway. Go ahead and take everything I just said the wrong way, because I just know you will. Need I add that I think the 'Barber Shop Woman' needs to get a life and look for something that actually matters to get het up about? Probably, so I just did.

There was a similar instance in Wellington when I worked on a local paper there - a hairdresser offered $10 haircuts for men but women's ones were $16. Someone complained and she tried explaining it took very little time to do a man's cut but a woman's cut required more faffing around and blow waving, etc but the stupid HRC wouldn't budge.
I went to Contours once but found there was no incentive to exercise! It was full of huge fat housewives who could hardly lumber from one machine to the other. I only lasted a month or so before going back to a unisex gym where I could perve at the men and be inspired to work harder because it was full of hunky men to impress!
I don't have a problem with equal rights and so on, but I don't like preferential treatment for certain groups, whether they are male, female, or of a particular race, etc. Respect is something you have to earn - it's similar to giving up your seat on a train or bus - if I were male I wouldn't automatically give it up for a female, but as a female I would offer it to an older person irregardless of their gender.
Why don't we celebrate the differences rather than moan that we are being discriminated against because someone won't give us an army haircut? Why doesn't she buy a razor and do it herself?

I do all the above and while I dont normally get complaints, I do get surly "I can do it"'s on a semi regular basis (different generation perhaps? Who knows), while the person removing the jar lid spends the next half hour huffing and puffing over the task at hand. Note this isnt talking about any one person in particular, just women (and sometimes men, but that's not what we are discussing here I dont think) acquaintences in general. Ok, I'm serious now. I have read a few replies from people who suggested that they might be interested...
Please PM me if you are seriously interested in joining Contours. I don't see why the hell not, there is no difference. We can finalise details via PM.
I'm out, my gym membership doesn't expire till march sometime.

I was actually being serious for once. The world has become so PC it seems that white middle class males are the most discriminated against these days.
Still, I'm happy. There are bigger things to be concerned about than this IMO.

Her actions bring shame on us. Human rights are there to invoke over serious matters. Barber shops are traditionally male - what makes her think she can overcome hundreds of years or whatever of custom.
I walked by a barbershop in Lower Hutt and was short of time so impulsively ducked in to ask for a cut just lately. They declined because"sorry we only do mens cuts". No problem - that is and should be their choice I thought as I turned tail and walked out. I was not traumatised - did not feel my human rights were violated, after all I knew it probably might be just for men, but had thought I'd try it out and see as a quick cut woulda been convenient. Cos sometimes you must wait days to get into a salon round here.
What will this woman do if she ever encounters any real injustice - blow a fuse? Besides I thought shops were private property and you could put a trespass order on creeps. I hope the barber does that on her.
A guy telling me the other day he was refused orchard work and the reason given was that he was Iraqi. Did he go to human rights commission. No - he said "don't want to work where I'm not welcome" and got a job at dry cleaners instead. IMO this woman is a Rosa Parks without a real issue.
No support on this one - she just increases the considerable animosity toward women here in NZ that Helen Clarks existence has bought about.
Whining about nothing.

We have them here already in Auckland... to name but a few:
Western Springs Park - (a few of them near the kids playing area)
Henderson - Railside Ave (near the court House)
Te Atatu Peninsula (down by the beach)
I am sure that there is many more of them around NZ.......

The barber was an idiot, he should have taken the opportunity to lop her hair off.
I'll say, he should have given her the worst haircut he possibly could.

I guess I'll have to ask the question here to get my "legal beagle" response:yes:
What does one need as "proof" of being denied entry/access to a public facility based on ones gender? I want equal proof/rights as that "woman" who was turned away from the barbers shop. Do I need to take someone with me to film the rejection? Must I ask for a written refusal (not like they would...) Would a cellphone audio/video clip be necessary, or do I just need my word? (with regards to having a similar case as that "woman", if/when I join a "woman" only facility)?
PM is preferred...

Yeah good point - I take it back.
How about a gym only for BMI between 18 and 25? Or body fat less than 15% and weight between 50 and 90 kgs?
Age from 18 to 25?
That would be good. I am about a BMI 19.

Hey Stonechucker
My hubby enjoyed your origional thread and agrees with all this too and wonders why men don't have the same
option. (i.e.,
I am the only woman/female/girl/lady (for those cheeky KB's!- Dover)....that works-out in the weights room at my gym. All the woman workout in the other cardio room (doing cardio) they never venture in to the weights room. Maybe only a handful of woman over the past year whenever i'm there have ever worked out in the weights area. I don't know why this is I have heard woman are afraid of heavy weights as they think they could bulk up. Anyway
I find the men in the weights room really great. They just do their own thing and sometimes if i'm struggling and don't have a spotter, a man will come over and spot me without me needing to ask. Very considerate I thought as this can also interrupt their own workout pace.
The men are actually in the gym to work out.....contrary to popular belief they are not in there to perv on us girls. Although I have never really looked too much, I see (and hear) a lot of hard work going on and have never seen "perving."
Although the men are great, sometimes I have felt like i'm encroaching on their space and have felt a bit awkward. Its like being the only woman
drinking on a 'Boys night out' with the boys ....its a boys night out! (but thats how I feel its not them) I have seen reactions from some men in my gym when i'm in the weights room that clearly they are not comfortable with me being in there when they are working out. It may be insecurities as well
which is understandable or it could be "Hey girly, weights are for boys not girls"
My hubby and I both agree that it works both ways with this man and womans gym argument.

Hey Katie
I can see where you're coming from. Although this wont change your feelings immediately, I honestly think (from a guys point of view), if the weights guys are looking at you occasionally (for whatever reason), it is only because as you say it's an unusual thing, or at least it used to be. I go to Les Mills on Taranaki St Wgtn, and when I was in the weights room today (for physio/rehab) there were equal numbers of men to woman! And to be more specific, the woman were more experienced than the guys were... Generations of today have long forgotten the stereotypes of different groups of times past (or even better, never had them in the first place, like myself). I really think you can use any area of the gym, and feel (and be) just as qualified or as "normal" as anyone else there.
Going back to my original gripes, when I was in Les Mills yesterday, I read that their new club opening in Lower Hutt will have a suspended womans gym from the ceiling, with the latest G3 technology LCD entertainment systems and equipment. Us ogres on the ground floor just get the normal entertainment systems and standard equipment... Nice:angry:
I don't know how much more of this I can take:sick:

Nope, I don't want to cause a scene - I can't fit through the entrance of the suspended womans gym at the moment (:dodge: ), with the latest G3 LCD entertainment systems and equipment.
Although, I hear they are replacing the walls of the suspended womans area with iron bars, making a suspended cage. They are then serving alcohol at the refreshments bar, charging an extra cover charge to enter and building private rooms in the back, for 1 on 1 "personal training"... :) [pt]

I rode my pushbike up to the fruit market across the road from the local ladies only gym this afternoon.
Couple of the girls in leotard/gym gear walked out - I checked 'em out as I rode past.
Struck me then that I can understand how they wouldn't want the some men in the room when they are bending stretching and working out.
80% of men would be cool - 20% are, well...not gentlemen.
On consideration i got no prob with chic only gyms. I wouldn't do the splits with me around either.
