the frosty morning rides lately...

On the road at 6am. It's dark, the winding, unlit back country roads are frosty, cold & wet.
The fog is thick, visibility is averaging 4-6 white lines ahead, sometimes more sometimes less. I'm riding on memory in places.
My fingertips & neck are numb, I'm wiping the mist from my visor every 10 seconds, occasionally opening it to see better.
I'm hitting almost solid white walls of fog & I flick the high beams off to try to see something... anything.
The road is slippery as hell in places, I can feel the rear diablo toiling away, the front bt011 stays rock solid(yay!!)
I've had 'traction issues' every morning for the past few days, 'swearword uttering' moments, yep.
Just be careful out there all you early starters and country riders.

BTW - try some Plexus or similar on both sides of your visor. I remembered my visor was dirty before I set off this morning, and Plexused both sides of it. It didn't fog up at all (unlike yesterday), except for some patches on the inside I missed. Brilliant! :2thumbsup

yeah, I know the feeling. I am never wearing my glasses on foggy mornings again, after riding to work this morning at 4.30. The visor started to fog badly, so I was riding with it up and having to wipe the condesation of my glasses every 10 seconds or so. I ended up stopping at one stage to give them a clean coz of the shithouse vision I had. Contacts for me on the foggy days from now on. That is all.

Dunno if you plexus it - if it's coated it wouldn't be a good idea. Plexus isn't abrasive, but it will probably wreck coatings with its solvents. My ski goggles didn't like it, as it softened the antifog coating. :confused2
However, it works fine on my sunglasses.

You can get Plexus from Motomail. It's brilliant for keeping visors and plastics in good order. I had to replace the visor on my last AGV helmet about 4 times over its seven-year lifetime. My current AGV's visor is nearing 5 years old (should replace it), and even though it's got some wicked scratches from dropping the friggin thing, and from stone chips, the Plexus keeps visibility good, by eliminating all the small scratches etc that cause that horrible 'starburst' effect at night. It also helps keep crud off, and in the rain I can clear it by turning my head to the side to blow the rain off.

I've got a Nolan Helmet with the Nolan Pinlock anti fogging insert. It is absolutely brilliant.

I've had issues with my glasses fogging, but at least it is only one layer rather than two. However I did something different this morning. I breathed on the inside of my glasses, fogged them completely, put my helmet on and closed the visor. I waited for the bike to warm up and by the time it was ready to go, the glasses had cleared and never fogged again. Which was great because I hate breaking the seal and letting water into the helmet.

The fog city works really well(used them for a few years) but even these conditions are pushing it. I have a really good venting helmet too (shoei x-ceed). I must get some plexus for the outside of the visor tho, sounds like good stuff. cheers

Use Pledge. Just the same as Plexus. Get a spray-on can and leave it in your backpack or tank bag, together with a soft cloth to buff it off with. The best stuff you can use on a visor. Pledge.

Pledge is pretty much all we use, and thats 6 of us, other than giving the helmet a good wash with some warm soapy water time to time, pledge is the goer

I put my windscreen back on recently. I usually leave my visor up and make sure I have a warm T shirt on. No visibility issues, no cold, even this morning in fog.

However, I do remember six month commuting from Kihikihi to Tauranga every day, my experience from those days is that fog can take on many consistencies.

Even worse, when I first started biking I used to commute from Eastbourne to Wellington around the coast road, if any KBers are doing this - my condolences. The biggest problem there was from waves crashing across the road, how do you combat that?

No - don't use Plexus on your Fog City or Nolan anti-fog inserts. Clean them with glass cleaner (Mr Muscle or similar) and a soft, clean cloth (sweatshirt cloth is tops). Plexus, silicone spray or Pledge will all make them fog up.

I just use a cloth dampened with cold water and a dry soft cloth to buff up the inside of my Nolan visor. Use whatever you want on the outside, but I have to say that I get the best results with water and a soft cloth.

Yeah rode to work last Thur. 0630 frost all over the place. Only got summer gloves and a 90% worn Rennsport tyre to contend with. 55km's to work too. Still better than a Pommy winter though.
