A scooter is more of a bike than a trike. A trike is neither a bike, nor a cage, it's a completely different category.

Wonna talk about trikes?

Wiki knows all and is wise.

A motorcycle is a two-wheeled vehicle powered by an engine. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle)

Well my parents gave me grief for going to the two wheels......nothing unusual there. But I got a call tonight and they are looking for a trike to do a Billy Connolly style trip around the countryside. Now that was from leftfield.

Few things I want to try and find out is at what point does a trike get classed as a car? What are the going prices for these types of things etc.

Any info would be good

Hence the title of the thread "bike?"

I would rather not see this turn in to a "correct terminology" thread.

So if you want to tell my parents to act their age, bang on about terminology etc I would appreciated it if you would make your own thread.

As for them acting their age, they have slogged their guts out all their lives to get what they have, both of them have had close calls death wise due to the incompetent medical system we have and they have decided its time to enjoy life. I say good on them!

So once again any constructive info about trikes would be appreciated

So we can have long boring repetitious threads about who waves or doesn't wave to whom in General Bike Ravings, but when a biker, who actually owns and rides a bike, comes and asks a sensible question as to the status of trikes (which can be registered as bikes) the thread gets moved to Rant and Rave!?

Motorised Unicycle = Yike
Motorised Bicycle = Bike
Motorised Tricycle = Trike
Motorised Quadricycle = Quike

If we all use the above names and definitions we'll all know what the fuk we're talking about.

A trike is not a bike it is a trike that's why its called a trike - it MAY be a 3 wheeled motorcycle however.

My Motorbike has still got stabilisers on though - so what is that classed as?

The poll needs a maybe/unsure option so I can vote seeing I started this whole ruccus with my innocent question :innocent:

Seeing people have pointed out that a bike = 2 wheels why is it that people here treat scooters with contempt and saying they are not a bike and yet they have 2 wheels? Then if a scooter is not a bike then why does it have a sub forum here?

Then along the same lines a trike can be either a car or a bike (blame Land Transport not me for this terminology). Then if there was a Ride Safe fundraiser and someone turned up on a trike would they then be told to bugger off because people feel they are not a bike? Then if we start categorising like this don't we run the risk of being seen as elitist?

Where do you see trikes?? At motorcycles rallies at motorcycle street races and at other gatherings of motorcycle inclined people, and as the ethos for this site is <img src=http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/images/title-text.gif> .......

It is also an option for those on two wheels who can no longer ride a two wheeled bike through injury etc

Also the question asked in his question was not "off topic" but one that people would be interested in and was a decent contribution to the forums, which hasve changed from "biker" to "bike" to help the mod nazis I see.

A trike is a bike, and I have no problem with that. But then I have a fairly broad interest in motorcycles compared to most on this forum....I don't care whether it's a Goped or a Hayabusa, give me a throttle and a pair of handlebars and I'll ride it.

So back to the original question, if a 3 wheeled vehicle is registered as class LE1 ("Trike") then the rider is required to wear a helmet I presume? And some "trikes" are actually registered as 3 wheeled cars and require seat belts etc?

I still think the original question was perfectly valid for the "General Biker Ravings" forum, which I see has now had a name change. I presume the waving threads will also be moved as bikes can't wave...or do much else without their riders?

If it's a Morgan it's a car. if it's a Ural it's a bike.

Does it matter?

And if only two wheels qualifies where does that leave kneelers? Anyone want to argue they aren't bikes? Try taking one of the *three* wheels away and see how far it gets.

Squeak the Rat
28th August 2006, 14:59
I don't get trikes. You get stuck in traffic, and you get wet.

But I'd buy one if I developed an inner ear balance problem (some would argue I already have) or when I turn 86.

IMHO - if a trike is being ridden by a biker then it's a bike.

Motu
28th August 2006, 15:04
If it has handle bars,it's a bike,if it has a steering wheel it is a car or truck (Morgans excepted...but aren't they always?) if it has rope it's a trolley. Then we have the pivoting trikes that lean into corners,oh dear...but still a motorcycle.

How many of the nay sayers have ever ridden a trike?

Flyingpony
28th August 2006, 15:08
It all depends really.

If the trike started out as a bike (Harley, Goldwing, Scooter) and then got modified by having two wheels at the rear, then it's still basically a bike. I've seen bikes modified like this and frequently the owner has some sort of physical disability and I think, good on them for getting onto a bike even if it has got two wheels on the back.

But fitting them out with a V8 car engine or a bench seat, for examples, makes them no longer qualify as a bike.

So when you are all to old to get on and ride a 2 wheel bike... what are you going to do.... I bet a lot of you all look at the trikes and go wow...... they are cool looking machines.. and guess what, you will still be accepted as a biker.

When I am unable to ride my 2 wheel bike then I have plans on getting a trike... which in my opinion is also a bike...

What about all those that have come off their bikes and unable to hold a 2 wheel bike up, they graduate to a trike cos BIKES are still in there blood.

Even Stonechucker was considering a trike after his accident....until he made his promise to his parents. Stonechucker is still a KBer and a biker in my eyes. And who knows one day he may just get back on a bike or ride a trike.

At all the fundraisers I attend I see many trikes there supporting the same things.. do you all turn your back on them - NO and why not cos they are still bikers. So a trike is still a bike.

We may argue to the cows come home on this debate...
some will say they are not bikes while many will say they are bikes.
But we are entitled to our opinions......

As to the original thread being moved... I disagree with the fact that it was moved... yet there are many NON-related bike threads in General ravings that have nought to do with bikes... yet they remain in there. The original thread was started by a biker whose parents are showing a interest in bikes/trikes...... and showing a interest in what he does... which is great...

Yep this is SpankMe's site.... and we all thank SpankMe for this site... but SpankMe please stop and think about all the old bikers that still want to be involved..... as they have bikes in there blood.... and one day you will be too old to ride a 2 wheel bike either throu injury or old age.... as you state you wont ever drive a car..... so how will you get about in your old age... a trike I bet... or a turbo boosted mobile scooter....

My 1st experience on a trike was coming back from the Sulpher City Rally a couple of years back. What a brilliant ride it was too! Since then I have have a few trips and many a hoon in paddock at a few rallies around the North Island.

I think of trikes part of the "biker" fraternity and see them as Kin so to speak. All trikes V8's, VW's, Goldwings, Harley, Rockets etc...

Tsk,tsk - The Ariel 3,remember them? Pretty forgetable alright.Sounds like Honda got the designs and made the Gyro.I've ridden the earlier version, and also the Gyro with roof and screen, complete with windscreen wiper. The naked one was a hoot, with 2 vertical wheels on the back you could bounce and chatter the rear end around corners while leaning the bike real hard.A good bit of low speed fun.I rode an Ariel 3 back in the day, just a quick spin around the yard,I remember nothing.

I've ridden several farmquad type things, from the 90's to bouncy wheel 200's - had a few spins around the dirt track on the TYZ250's,with dirt track Hooziers on the back. That's the YZ250 in there, and a pretty scary piece of kit - I knew what I had to do....drop off the inside with my boot hooked on the seat, and lean down looking under the bar, then cross it up under full throttle.Very scary with a peaky YZ motor and sticky Hooziers, that's a shit load of traction to break loose on clay, and if it hooked up you'd be launched into orbit. Not my bike and I damn near flipped it a few times, ending up head first over the side of the tank.

My experiance of your typical VW trike is limited to a spin up the road and back. They are not set up how I like,I've got a few plans on how I'd do it....and the Trike Works have it nearly perfect.

I haven't read this whole thread so someone may have pointed this out already but:
'BI' as in 'BI ke' means 'TWO' (wheels)
'TRI' as in 'TRI ke' means 'THREE' (wheels)

So to me a 'trike' cannot be a 'bike' because by definition a bike must only have two wheels. However, if some people class trikes as bikes that's their opinion and it's no skin off my nose.

Lets look at a few senario's:

Kids trike: you know the 3 wheeled bike with pedals...
Kids leave them outside and you ask them to put their BIKE away.
You dont call it a trike, but instead you always call it a BIKE.

Chainbike: some of you youngsters wont know about these bikes.
It has a chain and has 3 wheels and handbrakes.
It was never called a trike but a chainBIKE.

So from childhood to adult hood a 3 wheeled trike is called a BIKE.

At some point in time you modify your bike to suit your needs.
Whether it be modifying your shocks, seat, handlebars or whatever part on your bike, you are modifing it for you.
Example: Onearmedbandit - has modified his bike to suits his needs to ride his bike.

A Trike is a bike that has been modified to suit the riders need.
So therefore it is a BIKE.

PS: I have never ridden a Trike but would love to have a go on one ....
But I have sat on them and they are really cool bikes...
Oh yeah and I can reach the ground on them no sweat...

I wasn't going to bother posting a comment about this thread but as a lot of people seem to have extreme opinions, here's my two bob's worth.

Personally, I have some reservations with respect to whether a trike is truly a motorcycle and I have the same reservations about a motorised bicycle (if people actually remember them). The debate about whether they have 2 wheels or 3 and what that actually means is a valid one in a technical sense but probably not in terms of emotional inclination. Trike riders probably choose not to to drive the open top car alternative (like an MX5 for example) for for the same reasons that we prefer bikes. They wear motorcycle clothing, endure the same weather conditions as motorcyclists presumably because of the same sense of freedom and open spaces and dislike of cars as a source of enjoyment.

I find it surprising that bikers, who normally have a much higher tolerance of so-called non-conformists or individualists than most of society are so opposed to trikes and their owners. There aren't that many on the road and a take-over of KiwiBiker by trike owners is hardly likely, is it? What next, ban scooter and moped riders because they have little in common with sports bike riders? As I said, 2 wheels vs. 3 is a valid technical argument but not a good philisophical one. I'm more than happy to welcome them to our community, even though I wouldn't want to own one.

As a parting shot, there have been a number of trikes over the years on the Grand Challenge 1000 miles in 24 hour rides. Presumably, the Rusty Nuts committee therefore regards them as motorcycles and I have the greatest respect for these guys who have been riding all manner of bikes for decades in all conditions. I trust their judgement and tolerance.

bike, trike or fucking quike.

it's a cycle with a motor therefore a motorcycle.

But like a honda it is a motorcycle for fags and should be treated with the ultimate contempt.

tri‧cy‧cle
1. a vehicle, esp. one for children, having one large front wheel and two small rear wheels, propelled by foot pedals.
2. a velocipede with three wheels propelled by pedals or hand levers.
3. a three-wheeled motorcycle.

The Triumph is sadly off the road due to neglect because I can't keep off the Buell. Stale fuel and a shagged battery. Reprise imminent.

XB12X is most comfortable, most sensible, stupidest fun bike ever.

Mine arrived the other day. Couldn't remember why I got sent one until I read this. I took the demo ride ages ago. The backpack is a crappy small one, the same that Colemans gave me when I brought the Gixxer.

Tapped out at 170 (usefully) - but the bit up to 110 is just primo.

You have to real big for mine - or a jockey for a City X.

Unfortunatly you live in New Zealand - the LTNZ classifies trikes with an ''L'' label, same as scooters, mopeds and motorcycles. In your own little world you can say they are not motorcycles....but it will only be your little world. Some people grew quite powerful living a life of delusion, became despots telling others what should and should not be...and they were wrong.

You are wrong....unless you can change the law....

The only mention about trikes in that article related to those designed to specifically tow a trailer, and that bike was an HD.

How come pocket bikes and mini choppers get thier own forum yet trikes don't even get respect? Dispite the fact that almost no one on here likes minichoppers, and minimotos aren't allowed on the road.

a trike is a device that combines all the disadvantages of a bike with the disadvantages of a car and very few of the advantages of either

you can't split lanes

you get wet when it rains

you can't lock anything inside them

you need to wear a helmet (in NZ but not elsewhere)

bla bla bla... its already been said but I'll say it again.
Altho a Trike may be registered as a bike under NZ law that doesn't make it a bike in the true sense of the word...
bla bla bla
bi=2
tri=3
its simple no matter how much the point is argued.
That said, I happen to think trikes that started out life as bikes are way cool, when I am old and decrepid I plan on having a trike, the dogs will be stoked when that day comes cos they will finally get to come out 'on the bike' oops sorry! I mean trike...
A mate of mine has already reached the stage of being too frail to manage his RoadKing anymore so he has had it converted into a Trike. It is a thing of beauty and goes by the name of "Hogzilla". :2thumbsup

I understand your argument Motu and respect your point of view but would make the following point - you are assuming that legislation is correct.....

As I have said before if we change the question slightly the answer is very different.

Q. Is a Trike a Bike?
A. No - Qualify - Tri = 3, Bi = 2

However if we abandon the colloquial useage of "bike" and look at the root of the problem:

Trike is an abreviation of Motortricycle. Bike is an abreviation of Motorbicycle.

Both Motorbicycles and Motortricycles are subsets of the group Motorcycles.

Therefore:

Q. Is a Trike a motorcycle? (Where trike is assumed to be Motortricycle)
A. Yes - Qualify...see above.

Q.E.D.

No hair to split - you won't find any official forms to fill out for your motorbike, but you will for your motorcycle.

As far as I'm concerned if it has handlebars it's a ''bike''.I'll ride
anything with handlebars, because that alone makes it a bike.
