Sorry Jim, but I had brain fade and couldn't remember how to spell Paekakariki! Actually I'm surprised that the Taka's haven't been too badly affected by the rains.

Its alright, I spelled it wrong anyway.
I've been waiting for the new cuttings above Te Marua to fall down myself.

It's no surprise - farmers should be encouraged (subsidised) to plant erosion proofing.

Dead right. Nowhere near as good as the Rimutakas.

Our car just about turned into a boat half way around Greys Rd on Sat. Called *555 after driving foot deep water for a couple of Kms and they couldn't believe that the council hadn't closed the road yet (an hour an a half after they were instructed too).

Sure was. Went up Onslow Rd on Sunday and it seemed to be one continuous road work.

And I went around on Sunday. The sign said "Road Closed - Flooding".
It wasnt.

Conservation planting only works to a point: there's only so much a bunch of trees can do to help bolt down intrinsically unstable countryside -- particularly when a hundred-odd mm of rain falls on it in a comparatively short space of time. If there had been trees planted above the Paekakariki Hill Road, chances are that they would now lie strewn across what's left of it, together with a bunch of gravel. Weather-induced erosion is a fact of life, like death and taxes, but there are some things we can do to mitigate its effects.

Point of interest, I went for a quick strop up the playground on Tuesday late afternoon and there were a couple of little slips around but didn't look too bad. That Paekakariki Hill Rd is a suckfull road that needs serious work.
Got a bit worried when i saw the thread.
