View Full Version : Advice please, whether to claim insurance or not

Rang insurance company today. Excess is $500 - also covers helmet insurance.
My helmet cost me $650 about 2 years ago.
Bike insured for $9200. 2003 Bandit 1200.
Fairing munted, indicators, brake lever plate snapped. Damage on right side.
However, in my only ever other bin - the left side received some damage.
Bike has yet to be assessed. Sugilite would best know all the damage - its currently at his place!
My query is whether I claim or not or could this be better answered once assessed?
Thx in advance for your input.
P.S. I looked at my xrays and I can't see broken bones. Body sure is sore but I hope to go back to work tomorrow. Guess it got my father talking to me again even if it is his normal lecture mode = don't you think it's time you bought a more suitable means of transport - naff off - can't wait to have my bike back. :sunny:

It looks like the damage will well exceed your excess. Are you on a No Claims disc? If so, add the extra you'll pay next year to your excess and see if it'll still stack up.

What he said!
If ya lid was worth $650, fairing, blinkers, brake lever etc. will be thousands to replace so add it up. Claim your insurance and vow to NEVER let the lads get you so excited ever again....and ride appropriately for the conditions.

I'd say claim. I don't know shit from clay so mine is probably not the best advice. At least if you claim they'll send an assessor to have a look.

My advice is worthless. But I just wanted to say I'm glad you are ok, bikes can be fixed easier than bodies....

If you can get the bike written off, do it, buy a new one with the money and strip down your old bike and sell it for parts, dubble your money.

Yes what does happen if they write your bike off?? Surely you don't get to keep it?
I didn't think to check whether my jacket would be covered.
Lou, I do get discount for no claims - can't say I've noticed much discount tho!! think it is piddly.
It is just hitting me today how lightly I have come off injury wise and really bike wise. But most important of all - don't ride so fast on the road. Next time there could be a cage or powerpole in my path!!

be aware making a false claim and being caught may result in never being able to get insurance again..and not being able to get a mortgage because you cant insure house

I guess the dilema is that if you want it to look "mint" again then you need to make a claim to get everything fixed up properly. On the other hand if you are not going to mind it being just "patched up" then I suggest you get prices on just the bits you need to get it running again - probably pay to do that anyway and if it looks like major dollars then go the insurance way.

you can do what my friend done, when her car was written off she got the claim, bought the car back from the wreckers and sold the car and made abit more money, buts thats if they say its a write off

Yeah you get to keep it, I keeped my car that was a write off.
Bikes are often written off for cosmetic damage only, becuase fairings etc are expensive.

My insurance company, State, recently replaced all my gear after a crash, and they had a calculator to tell me how much I'd lose on higher premiums next year etc. I'd lose $400 on the excess & higher premiums over 2 years, but the payout for new gear would be $900, so it was worth it.
Ask your company, they should do the same. BTW, my gear was covered under my Home & Contents policy, I only have 3rd party on the bike.

Glad to hear that you're ok. I've just dealt with a similar dilemna. Initially I thought it wouldnt be worth claiming for the mostly cosmetic damage. What swung the decision in the end was how much difference the cosmetic damage can make to the resale. Both in value and marketability. I also claimed for my bike gear on my house and contents insurance. Have to say that my insurance companies have been awesome.

Glad you werent hurt. On my policy, I would have to make two claims - one for the bike, one for my gear, which is covered under my house policy cos its not bolted to the bike. Two claims may swing the balance in favour of not claiming - or of claiming for gear under household with low excess, but fixn bike yourself..

Highly unlikely you would just get to "keep it". If the insurance company writes it off, they own the wreck. You may have an option to purchase the wreck at a negociated price if you choose to, back off the insurance company.
That has been my experience with a written off car.

I'll give the bike a good wash and check over today, just to make sure we did not miss any other damage.
So far, from what I've seen it can be patched up for under $500.
Will know more in awhile.

Be careful about claiming.
My policy went up by the amount I claimed the next year :gob:
