Courses (Auckland - Sth Pref)

Hi, did a search, but way too many haystacks.

I haven't been riding all that long, and aside from how to sort of ride them, I know F'all about bikes, and nothing about mechanics......so.......

Is there an introductory to routine maintenance course or something similar?

I don't want to take Mr Suzuki's job, still get dealers to do my regular services, but just get an idea of what to look out for, what to check, what to do to look after your ride. Sort of chain lube, tyre pressures/condition, and any simple general "all owners should know" stuff.

I don't think there are any "official" courses. Check the evening classes at local schools, maybe a keen biker might run a course.

Every so often in the past Mr Frosty , with the assistance of the good offices of Kerrie from Motohaus , has run a "Basic maintainance " evening. Perhaps he could be prevailed upon to do another one?

Incidentally, I don't know why people speak of chain adjustment and lubrication as "basic" . After 40 years I still wrestle with the damn things. In theory, it's easy. In practice the malevolence of the motorcycle chain knows no bounds.

I believe all the training for motorcycle mechanics (trades) comes from Wellington Polytech???

Ah Ixion too true with the chain bit there. Its a good question there OZ and worth a look around. I was a mechanic in a previous life so I sort of take it for granted that people know all about these things with bikes. It is a very pleasant way to operate your motorcycle when you do your own maintenance (and mods). I am currently doing pennance now with the Bus because its still on warranty and has to be maintained by an approved shop (and I do recommend Squid at Haldanes). Perhaps there are a few here that are interested in having some services done or ripping an old one apart and reassembling it over a period of time. You can come around and do the spannner work next time I do a service on one of my old girls if you like..Might even have a cold one in the fridge as well.
