View Full Version : Asians!!!

Honestly, I hate the term. It's such a broad generalisation of people that it really is unhelpful for anything apart from gross generalisations, often derogatory and almost always wrong.

- Asians are bad drivers
- Asians have squinty eyes
- Asians are geeky math geniuses
- Asians know kung fu

Which Asian you talking about? Chinese? Japanese? Korean? North or South? Malays? Indians? Thai? Cambodians? Hmong? Shan? Karen? Khmu? Khmer? Indonesian? Indonesian Chinese? Dayaks? I could go on for awhile, but you get my drift... Each of those people groups have populations larger than the entire NZ population!!

Ok, my main beef is that each time someone says, "An asian driver did [insert bad driving behavour]." What they are implying is "so watch out for asians on the road". Why else would you include the person's racial description (however broad and inadequate)? Same applies to women and old people. If it was an average whitey (what is that anyway?), then people would just say "An idiot cager [insert bad driving behavour]."

Everytime someone makes a generalised statement like that, it just adds to very unhelpful racist feelings.

I'm all for general ribbing and piss-takes, but it's quite clear at times when it's not a piss-take and reveals underlying prejudices.

Okay, rant over :done:

Happy again :Punk:

I would employ an asian any day, From where i stand they ae hard working reasonably honest ppl (despite some having fake/no lisences(?))
Fasians are the ones who i know (aka bannana asians), and they are as kiwi as anyone who has been here a while.
I have worked with them in shite jobs whilst a student, most of them show a good friendly open minded smart attitude to life, and they could stick at things.
it still mildly annoys me to see groups of them all speaking their native tounge rather than intergrating though.

That's 'coz they've experienced many kiwis who won't talk to them, or talk down to them when they do.

I have spent considerable amounts of time working with intl students for whom English in a 2nd language, and in many oriental cultures, the practice is for the host to initiate contact with the visitor, making them feel welcome etc. However, in kiwi culture, it is largely the visitor's role to initiate contact and introduce themselves.

Not saying that either is correct, but unless one of them breaks their social norm and initiates contact, that gulf will always be there. It is true that being in Rome, do as the Romans do etc... however, most of the time people don't know this and therefore take each other as being unfriendly, when in fact, it's just different social norms.

How long did it take you to learn English? "integrating" is much harder than it sounds... Even coming from Singapore, where English was my first language, the humour and accent were huge things to overcome. People still look at me strangely when I come to the punchline of a joke, so I don't think anything's changed there.

Combat Ignorance, get informed!!

Yes, i think the next gen of kiwi's will be interesting, as for being informed, that I am.
I do know what your saying, but if some can intergrate, why not others?
some make the effort, but others appear to like to stay in "chinatown"
It could be us kiwi's, it always saddens me to see teen's yelling "coons" etc.. at asians or anyone else minding their own buisness on the street.
English was my first language (i still struggle:dodge: )
the effort to intergrate leads to intergration.:done:

In South Africa there are not many people of Asian decent... so when I got to NZ it was quite a learning curve for me, getting to know their culture and me trying to get used to their accents just as much them getting used to mine.... it was great fun. However I never had any close contact until recently - I met a young guy called Kai - he has been in the country a while, highly educated, but had been working at macDonalds of all places since he graduated... man oh man what an amazing young guy, so sweet and gentle and very appreciative of the work I have done for him. Proud to say he is now working for one of the larger banks... how he thanked me? - with a bottle of Moet :gob:

Now I know you cant judge everyone from one experience, but Kai has been amazing, loved his charatcer which came from a very traditional chinese upbringing... great people judging from one little fella. :sunny:

I always wonder why always look at the bad stuff first... sad huh! but hey I know I am niave about people.

Sorry was this off topic? oops...

Well, depends.... many "asians" I know (when I say "asian" I mean, Koreans, Chinese and Japanese as that's what I grew up referring to as asians when I grew up in south Korea) find it very easy to "integrate" not to say that it's a good thing but I for one speak in English primarily and I have never felt that I was disadvantaged or discriminated in anyway because of the fact that I'm an asian (except for one english teacher I had in highschool but that's a long time ago and she probably didn't like the fact that I knew english grammer better than her)

Infact, when I first came to New Zealand, I found most New Zealanders with european decent to be most welcoming rather than other fellow Koreans, which is probably why I ended up with friends who are all New Zealanders with european decent and my girlfriend is half irish and half New Zealander. When people so often complain about discrimination, etc, I wonder if some over-reaction and hostility along with pre-condition of mind which seems to forever look for any tiny hints of discrimination is at work... but that's just me.

Damn it! I do have squinty eyes and I am rather good at math.... now only if I was some Kung fu genius as well.........

[edit] - since you asked, it took me almost half a year of being in new zealand to be able to converse with people confidently... then took me 1.5 years for everyone to think that I am an american (due to my accent gained from watching too much american tv) then now people just scratch their head and wonder where the hell I came from.... (I'm happy as long as no one says that I sound like a fucking brit....)

Im with Lou. 32% of our cars that have been damaged in accidents were hired out by asians. Of that 32%, 87% was the drivers fault and of that 32%, 40% of the cars were write offs.

What percentage of accidents were "White?"; meaning of course: Irish, English, Scottish, Dutch, Belgium, Finnish, Polish, German, Italian, French, Swedish, Swiss, Spanish... etx. etx. etx.

You were never good at maths or reading were you?
Out of the 32% of asians crashing cars, 40% were write offs which meant 60% of the cars that asians crashed were fixable. Makes sense? Or should I add a graph?

In our company 42.342% (Hey thats what the spreadsheat says) were hires by those people classed as asian decent (sp)

Damn good point Korea, unfortunatly I couldnt say because the system only gives us an option to select asian as origin of hirer.

I could go on for awhile, but you get my drift...I get your drift, but the drift most Kiwi's have with using the term "Asian" IS the fact that it covers so many different countries! Surely you don't expect us to know which country each driver is from, do you? It won't happen. I have on occasion had discussions with friends while driving along and witnessing bad driving and the odd accident, in the case where it's been an Asian driver one of us has said "looked like Japanese" and then the other says "no, that was Chinese?", then we both agree to disagree and just say "it was an Asian either way!". Keeping this in mind Bend-it, you are going to have to accept the terminology Kiwis use, because that's all it is, terminology. Imo the word Asian is not derogatory in most minds and there is no offence intended towards you by using it.

Ok, my main beef is that each time someone says, "An asian driver did [insert bad driving behavour]."Honestly, in my experience of 20 years driving in NZ, Asians, Indians, and the elderly are the worst drivers I have personally witnessed on the roads. Many of my family, friends, and asscociates over the years that I have discussed this with have had similar experiences and would agree that the stereotype 'Asians are bad drivers' is deserved, unfortunately.

Now *racism* is the other side to the coin that others can discuss if they wish, but for me when I make a statement using the word Asian it simply means "from Asia somewhere", there's no intended racism or underlying prejudices, even on the road. But I don't speak for everyone here...<_<

Then just "the idiot driver" would suffice. Have you ever, on seeing bad European driving, see the urge to label them? German driver or french driver? Or swiss driver? Ahhh, it was European either way...

I suspect not... why not?

I have discussed this with have had similar experiences and would agree that the stereotype 'Asians are bad drivers' is deserved, unfortunately.

See, more stereotyping... If you drove on the streets on Singapore, Korea and Taiwan, you woud find it much different to India, Thailand, Indonesia and others. See what the stereotype does? It puts pre-conceived notions in people's minds when they see someone associated (often unfairly) with the target group of people.

NZ has the privilege of having incredibly low population density, and so drivers here drive differently from people from countries that do not. Not that either is wrong, just suited for different conditions. Instead of griping about "bad driving", maybe the "different driving" should be acknowledged, and more done in terms of driver training (at the cost to the immigrant) before allowing license conversion.

What I'd like to know is how many hires there were Sniper? Are we talking about a large number in the 1000's or low 100's?

I'll give credit where credits due. They could teach our lot a thing or two in the manners department. But here's the thing, put an asian behind a spheical object, be steering wheel or a one dollar coin and their personality changes. The steering wheel seems to effect their english as they suddenly do not understand. The dollar coin highlights their mathmatical skills with the result that their english suddenly improves.

Could tell a few stories from On the Busses. In the main, if they can shaft you they will.

Singaporians were with out doubt the best to deal with. Japanese the worst. Koreans are the most westernised.

Its examples like that that create the stereotype, yes it wrong, yes I understand where you are coming from but it will die down with future generations. We haven't gotten used to their driving you might say as its only been in the last few years there has been a massive influx, in particular to Auckland that their driving has become so noticiable so quickly. I've mentioned this on another thread but I spend most of my time emergency braking because of Falcon and Commodore drivers - possibly the "my vehicle is bigger than yours therefore I have right of way even though the law states that you have" but lets not generalise. Thererfore I've never got the handle on this blame the asians shit...and I live in Howick.

They say that one in five people in the world is chinese and there are five people in my family so one of them must be chinese. I'm pretty sure it's not me but it could be mum, dad, my brother dave or my sister Hoi Lin....but I reckon it's Dave.

Aiyya dem gai gwei lao gong deng ye!? This thread has me rolling in on the rice covered shop floor of my mum and dad's chinese takeaway shop!

Duh-damn, I've been having flashbacks to my life when I was a kid growing up in 80's NZ! I'm 3rd generation kiwi chinese - Great Grandad came over in the 1800's to get the gold from South Island (Gum Sarn).

The funny thing is ... I'm crap at maths - but I teach English at High School, I've learnt several martial arts so I can jump up and kick people in the head at random if I desire! I'm racist since I prefer my girlies asian (thanks Spankme! Got any asian girls in combat fatigues? I  my kawaii macho combat asian babes!)

I have to think about my responses in cantonese, but yet can follow any Hong Kong Martial Art Gun-Foo Flick in cantonese no prob! I cringe when I see a stereotypical scene with an asian involved (read : driving, arguing over cost of items and trying to park into a space too small for their car!) but yet laugh when I hear from my caucasian friends when they relate their "run-ins" with asians!

And oh yeah, I hate having to clarify peoples positions when they refer to "Asians" - when they ask me, I just say I'm an equal opportunity bigot against idiots of all nations, creeds, cultures and religions!

Now, any asians reading this have an eligible asian girl for me to marry? My mum is trying to arrange a marriage for me and I would rather have the option of having a choice in the matter! :crybaby:   :sweatdrop

I like Asians a lot better than Maoris. (Generalising wheee!)

You see, I am friends with people from many races; just only the ones that are 'winners', the relatively sucessful and intelligent ones. Sucessful people are more akin to each other from whatever background.

The differences arise when one deals with the lower forms of life.

Maoris: 'thug', 'gansta' tendencies. Vaugely threatening through years of social conditioning.

Whites: White trash thugs. Can produce some truly unsavoury characters.

Asians: Usually harmless 'thugbodian' style. Infrequently appears 'tough', but really has a manga fetish. May eat household pets.

.
Have you ever seen the Italians????? No really, you can tell their driving style a mile away. :dodge:

As for the rest:
The french drive with one hand on the horn and the other out the window. :shit:
The germans drive really fast and somehow manage to be polite.
The swiss are always found in clean cars, and are always on time. :gob:
Scandanavians are just amazing, nothing ever seems to faze them, except dry roads.

There are definately various grades of 'idiot drivers' but a friend of mine once described to me the worst possible combination of driver/vehicle/conditions.
An elderly Female (asian/italian?) taxi driver, driving a Volvo (4x4) taxi in rush hour, still wearing her Bowls uniform (with hat) after a light lunch and several sherries with the girls, in a pissing rain-storm.

Their maths knowledge is probably enough to know that neither of those objects is spherical, too ...

I've never had any trouble with French drivers (save for one lovely lady spanking my mate off his ZX6R outside Le Mans: gotta love that old priorite a droit rule) and, as I think you imply, German and Scandinavian drivers have been exemplary in my experience.

But since you're writing from Blighty are you in fact refering to elderly women from India/Bangladesh/Pakistan/Sri Lanka and Afganistan?

Took me ages to get up to speed with the fact that over here they call people of oriental descent asian and it really fucks the Pakistanis off that they get called Indian over here!

Anyhow, what I was really shocked when I first came here was that some people call people from India, Pakistan, etc... asians.... I always only called those from eastern asia (Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese) asians, we call Indians, Pakistanis, and afgans middle eastern people. or most people just refer to the whole lot as indians. Honestly, I hate the term. It's such a broad generalisation of people that it really is unhelpful for anything apart from gross generalisations, often derogatory and almost always wrong.

- Asians are bad drivers
- Asians have squinty eyes
- Asians are geeky math geniuses
- Asians know kung fu

Which Asian you talking about? Chinese? Japanese? Korean? North or South? Malays? Indians? Thai? Cambodians? Hmong? Shan? Karen? Khmu? Khmer? Indonesian? Indonesian Chinese? Dayaks? I could go on for awhile, but you get my drift... Each of those people groups have populations larger than the entire NZ population!!

I agree. I went to school with asians, studied at uni with asians and now some of my best mates at work are asian. I reckon people need to open their minds up a bit...

Nice thread Bend-it. My oldest friend came from Hong Kong when he was a lad of 5. We made fun of each other for ages before we realised we were becoming really good friends.
His funniest asian relations story came from a night out drinking that I'll never forget. We both had this mate called Daniel who you could make do anything if he was drunk enough. We started chatting up this story to Daniel that all chinese takeaways in NZ secretly sold cat on their menu as it was an asian delicacy and if he went in and asked, he would be served it.
We stood in earshot of the door to hear the fallout and couldn't believe our ears ..... When Daniel asked the very chinese looking takeaway counter hand if they served cat, he shot back in a very kiwi accent "sure mate, we serve anybody in here".
Suffice to say our laughter gave they game away and Daniel sulked all the way home.

(her Dad to her sister's fiancee, around the dinner table, with a straight face) 'For the best meat, you give the good meat to the cat, then you eat the cat.'

 Must add that to the retorts when the customers ask "Do you use good meat?"

 Thats what we say along with other choice comebacks ... My olds have owned a chippie and chinese takeaway since I was a little nipper and seen our fair share of wags, abuse and lovely folk.

Other retorts :

"You serve cat?"
"Yes we do, make sure you take off your pet's flea collar and wash it first!"

"You serve flied lice?"
"Yes we do, would you like the side order of bear's paw and tiger penis?"

"You should give the fish for free since its ours under the Treaty of Waitangi"
"Yes its free for you, the $1.50 is for us processing and holding it for you"

"Why don't you go back to your own country?" <-- Caucasian
"Well mate, Great grandad got here in the 1800's...when did you lot land?"

"Ying chong ching chong"
"Fark! Didn't know you were the idiot from the other village! Only they talk like that!"

"So...is this authentic chinese food?"
"Mate, you wouldn't want our authentic chinese food! Go to some other chinese shop you've mistaken us for!"

"You don't look chinese"
"You don't look half as intelligent as you appear to be"

"Do you serve chinese?"
"No, they take all the shellfish, drive badly and force up house prices. Screw them!"

"Can I have some chinese?"
"Why not, try some caucasian, samoan, fijian, etc while you're at it!"

Yeah, my dad's hard case - always gives a serve when he serves :msn-wink:Mum just ends up rolling her eyes:confused:

I showed your reply to my chinese mate and he's currently rolling on the floor clutching his ribs.

Yeah, being a banana (yellow on the outside, white on the inside) in this day and age gives me some insights to both sides of the fence!

Happy again :Punk:

when you go to the zoo do you look at the monkeys and say, oh there .. a spider monkey or.. oh blimey.. there is a tamarin monkey.. no you just say ''look at those monkeys"
same with asians... you just say ,,, look at those monkeys..!!!!!! oh... (i mean asians.....)

The problem is that when people get cut up by asians on the road it's easy to steroetype because you notice that they're asian more (if you're a honky). I've been nearly killed by drivers of countless races but asians stand out more so people say "bloody asians" or whatever and pigeon hole a whole continent of people into the bad driver category. If it's a honky that's driving two feet off your back tyre you just say "fucking idiot" with no reference to race. From my experience I'd say drivers are drivers and race doesn't make much difference, except christchurch drivers, those guys are nuts.

Belgians: avoid, at all costs.

I've never had any trouble with French drivers (save for one lovely lady spanking my mate off his ZX6R outside Le Mans: gotta love that old priorite a droit rule) and, as I think you imply, German and Scandinavian drivers have been exemplary in my experience.

But Belgians, especially in Belgium, scare the bejesus out of me. If you're not doing a ton plus, less than a foot off the guy in front's bumper, you just aren't playing their game.

Having been in God's own for nigh on a week now, I've got to say that Kiwis aren't very high up my list of the world's most careful, observant and courteous drivers. Demerits for all of you, I'm afraid. Especially anyone driving a slammed ricer with a stupid spoiler bondo'd onto the boot. Oh, and the private plates -- high correspondence between private plates and potato-headed driver, it seems.

Anyway, nice to be here, and three cheers to McJim for making me and the clan feel welcome.

I'll live, mate. And it's certainly no worse than the UK. I reckon a couple of weeks in California has spoiled me a little bit.

Exactly......if we were driving in Asia it would be the other way around.....number of people who complain Asian's cannot speak English.....if they were in Asia they would have less cluse about speaking Asian than Asians do at speaking English..........
