View Full Version : What's the point in doing this?

I'm a bike picture whore so to say... everytime I see a picture of a bike that looks different, or kewl or whatever, and I havn't seen something like it before, I always save the picture, and now I have a rather large collection... but anyway

I've noticed that some bikes, which I'm assuming are all from the USA... they seem to have modified the swing-arm (or whatever) and it makes the back wheel further out than normal...

What is the point in doing that? Is is for drag's? (Which I don't see how it could be because those "modified" bikes look very "pretty" so I don't think the owners would risk damaging them...)

Does anyone know why they do it?

Pictures below to explain what I mean...

Drags presumably, longer wheel base usually means better high speed stability (as far as I am aware).

Apparently they don't go in for corners in a big way in the states - hence getting an american Car/Bike to go round a corner is a bit of a chore.

these mods are made to racing bikes to bring their handling attributes back down to American standards - like Harleys and Boss Hoss thingumies.

Who knows?

And less likely to mono off the line, though it also reduces the weight on the rear tyre, so less traction. A common mod for drag racing mowadays is to tie the rear down with straps.

For these bikes, most likely for show.

I think the swing arm mods look ugly as lol, though some of the paint jobs are very nice :)

Cheers all... So the common answer is for Drag's... I wouldn't spend that much money on my bike to drag it... but then again I'm all for the bling-ing of bikes... so yeah...

And yeah some of those paint jobs are bloody awesome...

I really love the pic's fishslayer posted!

Edit: Thanks to the mod who moved this into the right category... I'm sorry :)

You should see Finn's paint job when he goes down the "drags"

He uses straps too, but up not down.

There's probably no point. Remember they're American, so they've all been modified to be individual, but in a conformist fashion.

Whoops, must be time for a coffee.

Go down town Detroit over a weekend and you'll find about 1000 on the street at a time, all lined up, polished to hell, but going NOWHERE, and surrounded by some of the meanest looking Black dudes you will ever see

There was an article in one of the Brit bike mags about the big underground drag scene in the states. Speed, all sorts of "macho" posturing, drugs, and guns. You'd need to feel lucky...

Yeah the bike scene there is HUGE (well obviously because the country is huge lol), but I think bikes there are cheaper then here (for what they earn compared to what we earn I imagine)...

A work mate came back from the states a month ago, and he reckons that you walk down any city street at any time and you'll past heaps of harley's just parked around... because there are so many there the thieving issues arn't as high...

Moi kinda likes them me does.....mainly the R1 in placids first post...

I agree that is a mean looking bike... It even has NOS...

As I mentioned I like it when people bling their bikes up... whether its blinged for pure image or blinged for performance... I don't mean to dis anyone, but standard bikes are just that "standard"... Like all the KB'ers buying the gixxers... theres enough of them on here to start thier own gixxer club lol... I'd love a gixxer (or any bike 600+ lol), but mine would have to be different somehow...

Some cool looking rides.. if I had plenty of other bikes, then sure, why not?

Bike means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, nothing wrong with tarting up some machine just for the look, if you've plenty of dough. Wouldn't have one for my only ride, but I'm guessing that these guys love bikes enough to have more than one or two ;)

Different countries and cultures seem to have different ideas on customs, huh! The German seem to build these god damn ugly street fighter things which have a really weird pushed up tail section. The Japanese like to take older bikes and trick them up with cool suspension, wheels, exhaust etc. The French have real outrageous styling and look like nothing else.

Always enjoyed checking out other kinds of customising. Some of them are strange looking at first glance but youv'e got to admire the skill and obvious enthusiasm.

I can't help blingin' my bike up - every time I fall off I respray it a different colour (used to be red) and replace the broken bits with aftermarket.

Pretty soon there will be nothing left of the old bike!

Now this is brave and cool.
Looks like a mix between a VFR frame, Duc 996 engine and swingarm, ZXR750 front end and ZXR top fairing with a NR750 tail section, then paint it black.

Hmmm, think I might go post this on some American Ducati boards and tell 'em its the new 1200 replacement for the 999! :Punk: :innocent:

What is the point in doing that?

Don't you have to do that when you've run out of adjustment on the standard swingarm to take up the chain slack?

I agree i don't really like those... it looks like someone hit the rider from behind... but instead of breaking the rear end... it bent it...

See that red Yammy has a NOS bottle in the swingarm - cool.

Americans have way too much spare money!

Long swingarms, lowered down - its a street/drag fashion thing over there. Imagine a wheelie on a long ride like that :spanking:

I think all the below are ugly as hell except the Gixxer... But just cause I like the colour... the extended swingarm sucks...

Thats just crazy... I'm not too sure how much bikes cost in the USA... but I'm sure $4300 would be close to half the price of the bike...

This is what happens when boy ricers get there hands on motorbikes. They might look "pretty" (pretty ugly imho) but whats the point if they cant go round coners? There just to show off how much money you can waste. There shallow and nasty. And cant go round corners.

In town, you don't need to go around corners! Plus drag racing (for the ownership of the bike if you lose) has been a tradition for time immemorial in this country, and the gangstas (for it seems to be that crowd that blings up these things) now have another way of showing how much money they have to throw away, to impress the hangers on.
Some of these bikes are bloody quick, mind, make brilliant noises and lots of smoke and fury ensues when they wind them on. You actually see very little action, tho', it's more the anticipation of something happening and showing off your ride and how bad you are, and then everyone goes home. Posturing, I think it's called.
Taste? Hmmmmm.....................

Cheers

americans sure do some reall strange things to there bikes. but its not like they gotta worry bout corners much. too much money not enough sense. hell bet they hardly get ridden huh. still cool to look at and see what can be done. im impressed with the level of engineering skill.
