hopped on my bike this morning.... warmed it up and all that took her out down the drive left at the end of the street and up the hill thought hmmm ill go see if my mates at the bus stop....since i had a bit of time to kill....
so i downshifted from 3 to what i thought was 2nd ....ended up in first....back wheel locked up and started juddering along . due to the hard engine braking....as far as i remember i brought on the revs a bit which got it out of the juddering by this time i'm starting to enter the corner, a right hander ....and i went sweet ill go for it as the rear was ok ....leaned her over and all i can figure is i hit the "powerband" revs and the bars went hard right and down she went... i've got a new rear tyre put on 2 days ago
had it scrubbed alot of the way.....
in summary it was cold tyres (happened 50 metres from home) to much psi in tyres (set by bike shop) hitting the slippery unscrubbed part of the tyres ...a crappy downshift....
and me being a useless rider.
one word....

so yeah bike fine broken front brake lever and a few more scratches on the fairing
main damage is my bruised ego.

I can feel the love in this thread slipping at an alarming rate..:laugh:
Continental Attacks warm up in a blink but you still have to have some respect on cold tyres...... but you know that now.Remember a simple thing like dumping the bike at low speed doesn't seem so bad,slide across into the other lane and things can change very quickly for the worse.

the rear did a little fox trot, was kinda amusing really...
Was taking it up for a service and to get the new can put on, shame on me if i had to push it the rest of the way....:rolleyes:

Overtaking is the worst time - I'm holding the revs up to get power, and I'm alongside another vehicle ...
I'm hoping experience will fix it, but the interval between incidents doesn't seem to be increasing :(
I've done the reverse too, but that doesn't cause so much drama.

Perhaps try thinking of it in terms of general acceleration or speed..... Up (on the gearshift) for up,down for down..(Changing down a gear to overtake etc would be the catch 22)...The upper gears would be a little more forgiving but first and second could be a wheel lock up.

Nearly got caught about a year ago on the change thing. Meant to change up but went down a cog instead. Still have no idea how it happened. Head somewhere else no doubt. Gave me one hell of a fright. Bit like stepping of the last stair when in fact you still have one stair to go.

im guessing you would have worked out pretty quick what youd done wrong. clutch in.....settle jumping bike and find the right gear....if needed, easy on the brakes and off to the side of the road to sort your undies and get your heart rate back in order.
when ever the bike acts up [like the time the chain came off on a corner] im on the clutch, changing down to slow my speed and then on the brakes once im upright. off and stop on the side to sort out wtf happened and how to remedy.

You would not pull the clutch in any more than cracking it and modulating the throttle just enough to bring the rear wheel under control...... Simply pulling the clutch in and trying to turn will induce understeer...... In the past i have seen people in front make a simple mistake entering a corner slightly to fast and things get a little ragged,then when things come right (by chance maybe) they get caught in the moment then try and blaze through the corner nearly crashing.
How many folk have come up to a corner a little to hot and not wanted to get off the brakes? simply because your brain goes in to self preservation mode..If you do not release them to get some stability back for the turn in,you end up going straight ahead and offroad...Once you start mashing the throttle/clutch off and on,banging on the brakes your next accident is not far a way....... I think most of the offs i have seen over the years were locked up brakes and going straight ahead even when the speed was not that high in some cases.

Try reading for a start.
Check amazon.com then ride (carefully) to your local library to see if they have the books. If they don't they can probably get them.
Don't worry about the racing technique books, start with road riding books and work your way up.
That way you can (hopefully) learn by other peoples mistakes.

Sounds like you downshifted far too late.
If you really didn't have time to clutch in before the corner you could have downshifted in a better place.
Blipping the throttle on downchanges might help... only problem then is thinking you're in second when you're in first... made love to the tank a couple of times with that one.

I'd like to say "yeah we've all done stupid shit like that" but some pedantic fucker would probably pop up and say "I never did - I'm perfect"
I've binned from being an absolute tit - too hard on the front brake while turning a corner and over I went - live and learn.
you probably won't make the downshift on a corner mistake again so in that respect lesson learned - glad only pride got hurt.
If you're anything like me there are loads more lessons to learn - lets hope they're all embarrassing and not dangerous.

i didn't downshift mid corner at all i downshifted before i had even started to turn it but i went into the corner while it was still juddering i think and the fact of it being in first with alot of revs i was putting all 34 hp through the wheel most likely on a new slippery tyre i don't think is the best combo...
i guess i was too used to having my lovely gpr 80 that never let go.....no matter how hard i tried
with an irc tyre which we later today found the bike shop put 42 psi in it...noting i only weigh 62 kg's
so that tyre might as well have been solid rubber....
i think i shouldve waitied and saved my pennys for another gpr....learnt this lesson the hard way...
can't blame the tyre i guess i shouldn't put so much faith in the bike eh

Well, good to hear you're alive and well from your experience - at least you can reflect and learn from it. Best to keep reading and learning about the fine art of safe motorcycling! I'm reading everything I can get my hands on and still hungry for more information.
Ah well, fix up the bike and ride safely for the future - at least the only thing hurt was pride (which we really don't need too much of!) and you're getting the usual help and abuse from fellow kbers! :yes:

saw a guy on a bandit 1200 thingo at the top of my street this morning red leathers , had dropped it and was strugglin to pick it up,, was fuckin furious at the car drivers that pushed their way past the poor guy as he tried to pick it up I was well back in a queue a fair way away and was just putting the handbrake on to run across a few lanes of traffic before someone in the car next to the guy gave him a hand to pick it up, Aucklanders are wankers except for the guy who like I was about to got out of his car crossed traffic and gave the guy a hand

Any fule noh you clutch out fast on way up box and clutch out slow on way down box.
Still, at least you did it on a 250 as a learner and admitted it was inexperience.
...shhh....Some of the grown ups do similar things on V-twins and try to blame engine braking. If they can't handle the big toys they should get some training or ride a motorsickle more suited to their abilities

Shit yes. Due to my ongoing non-death my mates are all starting to become interested in biking and, inevitably, asking for advice on a first bike.
It goes something like this: One cyclinder cheap; Two cylinders better; Four cylinders trickier, but more fun to grow into. However, very nearly every second hand IL4 250 in the country has been thrashed absolutely to death.
So, go ahead, prove me wrong....

The first thing you need to learn to control when riding bikes is the stuff that goes on inside your head.
Then it's a matter of learning and applying the learnings. Read books, articles etc. Get Twist of the Wrist out of the library. PM me your address if you want and I'll mail you a recent PB magazine that has a good article on cornering and the process for entering a corner and throttle/brake application throughout the corner, including the effects on tyres/suspension etc.
And learn from your mistakes. For example, if I hear of you undertaking another rider again I might get grumpy like speedie too.....
At the end of the day mate, we want you to stay alive.

zxr's crash well very little gets broken
mechanically my bike is loverly.....has had new chain and sprockets....just had the cam chain done with tensioner blade as well and all new springs and shaft etc for the tensioner....
and a loverly new clutch just put in...
it is well loved...
there are a few well loved ones out there just because theyve been lowsided etc....doesn't mean theyve been thrashed...
but in saying that....
the single are all thrashed because people ring the tits off them trying to get power....
the v twins are alright and generally because of the bike they are in are not thrashed....
and inline fours the majority have had an owner at some point that has run it into the ground.....
just gotta check them out thoughroughly before buying ...if it's thrashed you will be able to tell pretty quickly.

the good thing about a gixxer 750.....wheelies don't require clutch....just give her a handful....
now getting off the line would be good to see......
my zxr is running a tzr 250 clutch....due to me killing the zxr clutch well the friction plates....so i put some tzr ones in it (3ma) it's awesome now, the old clutch had slipped since i got the bike

go take a BRONZ course.. take an Advanced Rider course from John Wright or Passrite.. go do a few track days..
DONT downshift in a corner.. use more back brake to act as a rudder crank it over and work the throttle .. look where you WANT to go and shell come right .
or sell your bike and get a WRX with a Cessna wing on the back and a cofe can muffler.... you'd fit right in.. :done:
from what i hear of your behaviour on a bike .. it wont be long before you undercut someone or cause a crash and someone will deal to you..

Ok I have been thinking about this...
On any rides that I am on, that you are also on.....
You, young man are to stay riding behind me... at a safe distance.
That way you will keep your speed down and learn to ride better..
The reason I say that, is by going slower you will learn the corners better.
Sure you wont be following my lines as I ride a cruiser and as we all know crusier's take a different line to a sportsbike.
If you pass me at all, that I will slap your hand real hard... or it could be a boot up the tush......
So it looks like Im gonna have to go on a few Thursday night rides...
it wont be every one.... but on those night's Mark, if I am there, you will remain riding behind me. No more playing silly buggars out there on the road young man....
Mark, we all want you to survive out there on the roads......
none of us want you to have a accident....... or get badly injured
(including speedie)
But unless you start to listen to people and learn from your mistakes....
something is gonna happen.
Mark, when you pass a car you dont then go and slow it down...

I'm not taking a dig at anyone, but you should all shut up and worry about your own riding ability. If Mark doesn't learn in time then fate will make a final decision for him and that will be the end of that and you can all say "I told him so".
If someone does something dangerous that you do not apreciate, don't ride with them!

as i said itn the orgional post alot of factors contributed to the lowside...
yes i screwed up the corner by going to hard at it... shit happens as we have seen time and time again on here it can happen to any of us doesn't matter how good a rider you are or think you are ....
i'm trying to improve my riding , thus taking corners faster..... if your trying as hard as i am to learn to be better a bin is enevitable....if you nana it everywhere how are you meant to learn.....for example n4cr....aka tristank
his bike has had a few battle with the tarmac now he wouldn't be the awesome rider he is now if he had taken it easy everywhere...
if your pushing hard sometimes you crash....i get over it and move on....
you show me somebody that has never crashed on a corner and that person i can guarantee is not a very good rider....yes i know there are some exceptions....
but the best riders ddn't get to be good by just puttering around .... they went hard.....crashed left right and centre and now have bigger cc bikes that they have gained the skills to ride by giving a 250 hell so now they have $20,000+ bikes which they can ride around on knowing they can ride properly and arn't going to make a mess of thier dream toy....
i would not move onto a bigger bike or reccommend anyone to move to a bigger bike until they have pushed serious limits of a 250...
i know in all truth i am nowhere near ready to have a 600 or thou...even if my license did so allow....
it would just be signing my own death warrent and a waste of money because i would be sure to crash it soon after getting it....
250's are for learning skills on learning skills you sometimes screwed up i screwed up....and ill probably lowside this thing 10 more times.....minimum...

ok... i was a POST TEEN tit then.. i was at Camp LeJune North Carolina ..with the twisty roads of the Great Smokey Mountains 10 minutes away.. i could ride Deals Gap and the Tail of the Dragon pretty much whenever i wanted .. Saturday nights, we would hit he town.. get in trouble with the local constabulatory and raise 9 kinds of hell with the hillbillies.. my brand new bike was a total rat in 7 months and i ended up with no license more than once

By keeping the bike upright means you are a better rider.
If you want to go so fast around corners... then get your butt out onto the track on track days and learn there.

Mark - That is why they hold Track days...
Frosty is holding a Taupo track day soon..... for different speeds.
Slow (newbies) medium and fast pace riders.
Which would be idea for you to learn on there.
Frosty runs a tight ship on that day... and you would be ideal to do that day.
On a track: talk to Motoracer, quasi, loosebruce, keystone or any of the other KBers that have done Pukekohe track days...
You ride YOUR line , and those coming up from behind it is their responsability to get around you.. not your prob as long as you hold your line.
So you think riding a 55km corner should be done at 90km.....
Can you see around that corner that no cow or sheep has escaped from a field....?
Track days are ideal for riders like you... the guys that do these track days all the time can teach you a lot.

Mate, get your ass to a track day!! Trust me, you will love it, and learn a shit load. There are slow/medium groups that you will not be the slowest in, its a friendly environment where if you ask you will get all the advice in the world.
There are two things that concern me with your attitude in this conversation, and I dont want to come accross as telling you what to do, or what to think but this is just my input....
1. You dont have to bin, ever. Sure, plenty of people do bin, but plenty of people dont as well. Binning on a bike is not progressive learning. I teach skiing where people have that attitude, but this is a you vs ashpalt, not you vs snow. Take the progression a bit slower, remove those bins from your grand plan of learning.
2. A faster rider is a better rider. FALSE. Learn to ride better, safer, more aware. Get your riding to the point where things you think about now (gear selection, other drivers around you etc) are becoming second nature. Start to wind up the speed once your skills are up to it, not the other way around.
I am not the best rider, I have only been doing it a few years myself but this is the attitude I try to bring into my riding because I do not want to bin.
I hope something in this made sense mate, i can see you are being bombarded a bit today so I hope you are still open to some constructive critisism. :rockon:

Mark I have not read through the entire thread, so apologies of this has been mentioned, sign up to be part of the mentor system, contact a KB mentor in Auckland, ask for help, and let them help you... you say you want help, then get it, we have a great facility to help people improve their riding.
If you have a few $'s spare Riderskills are giving KB'ers 50% discount for tuition, bike to bike communication - on the road... great tutor, stunning option.
There are many options for you. Decide what is best and do it. You can only improve something if you take action... and that goes for all things in life little dude.

This sounds like some good stuff. I've found that by practicing something thouroughly and regularly, one can pecome more than proficient with it (FPS:devil2: ) and now I intend to develop my riding skills the same way; because unlike a car, you can't really afford to make ANY errors learning to ride a motorcycle.

Mark, have you ever heard top racers talk about being in the zone? Thats when everything just happens and you put in a blinder lap, take corners perfectly, change gear at the right time, all while calm and relaxed and not really thinking about it.
The zone happens when your subconcious mind is doing the riding, and you don't have to think conciously of what you are doing. The only way for your subconcious to learn this stuff is through repitition with correct technique.
Going fast with crap technique will not make you a good rider (as usual there are one or two exceptions). Learning skills, practising them until they stick then improving is what makes you a good rider.
Have you learnt the right skills or is going fast a good enough skill? Take these peoples advice. Do a course, read, trackdays. Learn good skills and apply them safely. Where not saying don't ride fast, we're saying ride safely, however fast you choose to go.

That's interesting that you say you are prepared to push it and bin on the road umpteen more times, but you don't want to push it on the track. On the road you have:
Pot holes
Power poles
Cars
Trucks
Oil
Gravel
Logs
Fences
Gutters
etc etc etc
On the track you have run-off areas and all the other traffic is going same direction and similar speed.
Training is not a cost, it is an investment. If you can, sell it to your olds that you've recognised the hazards on a bike and want to make sure you are safe, and you need to do some training.

i tell you what, with that attitude i am so glad your not in my town!! id rather you lowsided and bruised your ego on the track than lowsided and killed youself and maybe someone around you. you say the track is no place for a newbie to learn...id rather a learner rode there, had their accidents there, where there is first aid on hand and others to help pick up the peices. the road, imho, is not a good place. not if you want to ride like a bat out of hell.
speed limited corner on the open roads are limited for a damned good reason, as crashe pointed out...stock on the roads, debris on the road, wet surface etc. personally, i take speed limited corners at whatever feels comfy...i dont think ive ever taken one at the recommended speed except for when its shit weather and im not certain of the surface.

ive binned it once....and i take half the responsibility as i too thought i was hotshot and was going faster than i should have. if id been at the speed limit, i would have had time to go for the brakes, clutch and downshift and out of the way of harm.
i keep re-reading that post of yours and shaking my head....im now thinking bikes should be restricted from kids like you. crashe has the right idea...stay behind at group rides. i know my skills and my speeds are not up to scratch, so i stay at the back...let the others go ahead and do what they wish. last time i followed behind a rider with much more experience, and i swear, my riding was so much better....i was able to follow his lines perfectly, and match his speed. nothing but a benefit!
theres just too many people can be badly hurt even killed when just one rider fucks up in group rides.

I haven't read the whole thread... but just to add my 2c here, all i've got to say is read 'Twist of the Wrist'. Infact, I think it's important that you do.
One thing i'll quote from it, in reference to you saying you want to ride fast to get better; remember this:
What I have discovered is that 95 percent of my students reach unexpected new levels of confidense after only half a day of classroom plus track training, and half of them can be coached to a high degree of technical skill in 2 days: but only if they ride at 75 percent of their limit. What happens after 75 percent? Everyone agrees, in some fashion, that survival reactions (commonly known as fear) are the ever present barrier to reaching their goals.
Now, not riding real fast now may not sound like a lot of fun (hell I know it doesn't, i'm your age... i'm impatient etc etc too), and i'm not going to take a high horse either - i've been a bit silly in my short riding time. But reading this, written by someone who knows more about riding then I guess I ever will, shows that I need to get the techniques down pat, and let increased speed flow from there. I think you'll admit to yourself that you're in the same boat.

We was all squids at some stage or another, we all probably thought we was indestructable. Maybe some of us still do, but I don't care. Just sounds like you stuffed up re the bin. Could blame other tings mark, but at the end of the day you did not ride to the conditions and stuffed up with the gear change. Oh and I reckon that anyone who can put up with the verbal/written shyte that you have recieved and not be a softcock, has to be a good bastard. Now go and clean the yard and mow the lawns boy! :shutup:

I agree with il4 you put up with alot of shit from people round here. But they also give you helpfull information. I reckon you will become better out of all this ;) then one day you will be giving me 'the learn' :nya:
