Maybe the new DR250 Djebel. It's just like one cooneyr was riding..

So far i do, have only done one run so far (the test run) to Little river for a pie then home via Port Levy, the bays and over dyres pass.
Had J in tow on the serow. The Djebel does have a bit more go in the open limit than the serow. I re-adjusted to the small bike style of onroad riding quickly. It corners well. By Little River J was thinking road sections are a long haul. At the start of the shingle climb J wasn't so sure with the rear feeling loose, but i pointed out that her front was tracking well and as for me, I was having a ball (goes back to your totally un-intimitated comment, backing into the corners and so on without the weight of the Transalp). By the end of the shingle part (now in Port Levy) J was grinning ear to ear. By the time we got to Dyres Pass she was gaining the confidance in the tyres on sealed corners too.
They are great when the wind is with us but a bit of a struggle when it blows the wrong way.
We definatley have some fun to come.

Glad you like it. Makes it sound like I should have kept the 250 backing it into corners and all. Hmmm a 250 AND a 650 - yer right - dreams are free. Had enough trouble with the finances for the 650 as it is. Hopefully have signed the sales agreement for a house in town mid next week with possession in Nov!!!. Finally get a garrage and get to dig out my "noisy" tools (welder, drill, grinder etc) so can start things like paniers bars, cheap pivot lifter etc etc.

Yea, the weight of the Transalp makes it very hard to save when the thing grabs while sliding sideways. The DR650 i would hope (being smack in the middle of the 250 and Transalp as weight goes) might still be light enough to let loose on at times but more care will be needed than on the 250 (on which a little guy like me can manhandle to the end of the earth).

Yep no worries. Have a few lengths of 12mm bar that I can use. Like I say going to be a while though. Hopefully will beat lifting the heffers onto a block/crate etc and much cheaper that $130 for a fancy gas assisted lift.

Glad to here that you had fun on the 250's.
They are not the best open road bike although they are fun in the hills.
I think you need the 650's for the more open straight run's.
And that's why SDU traded up.
Now SDU can say the opposite.
That is the 650 is better in the open stuff and not as good in the tight stuff.
PS: We may have geared the front sprocket down by one tooth.

There an easy/hard diversion at one point as well for the more/less trail oriented bikes. I'll have a better look with a map sometime before the ride. Got permission from the wife (still weird saying that), all relaxed and refreshed from the two weeks away and looking forward to getting out there with the chch dualsport crew. Only to reread this thread and discover that the ride on Monday is a more formal (and larger) affair. Not sure if I'm ready for that.
Getting out there with a few of you guys where I can learn and not worry too much about being the noob is one thing. Being on a big group ride is I think a little out of my depth just yet. So it looks like I'll be chickening out of this one. Might just go for a solo somewhere out the waimak or up into the port hills, get some practice in.

What a load of dribble, stop making excuses, back yourself and go and do it. The ride is for all all bike sizes and by including the big bikes (the real duelsports :dodge:) the trip is likely to be fairly easy going. If any is going to be making noob out of themselves it'll be me - I'm still learning the ropes on this whole off road thing . But I'm still going to be there.

Managed to fell off just once (big long puddle in a huge 4wd wheel rut) and got stuck once (up to the axles in a big bog - took four of us to push me out) but I wasn't only one who stuck in the same spot. Attended my first professionally run adventure ride - headed off from Canterbury rides and at the very first intersection half the group went one way the rest went the other – mmm so that’s how it’s done. Up Rapaki track, (much to the pleasure of all the MTB’s, walkers and runners – not) to the Summit Rd, into the clouds and rain, couldn’t see bugger all so took it easy, got soaked, descended from the clouds and slowly dried out again. The rest of the day was spent on the flat in the vicinity of Sheffield/ Rolleston on various paper roads, shingle roads, etc, with the ride finishing at Rolleston BP. Cooneyr, you should have been there, it was all in your backyard. From there it was a bit of a blat along the Waimak on the way home.
Lowlights
The shit weather on the Summit Rd – got wet
All the sealed roads
All the straight, flat, gravel roads
The big bog hole I charged through – bugger, wet again
All the dust
The rain on the way home – yep, wet again
Getting stopped by Mr Plod, sooooo close to home. I was silly enough to overtake a mufti.
Highlights
Rapaki Track
Having a blast on the high speed bits of paper road, river bed etc
Having so many other adventure bikes around
The guy on the XR650 and his endless wheelies
Watching the on the BMW get his timing so wrong as the big irrigation sprinkler thing tracked him perfectly as we rode down the track it was watering. Man those things can pump out the water. I stayed dry this time.
A great Venison Pie for lunch
Managing to run over a magpie on the way home – I hate those things
Mr Plod let me off with a warning
Pics
1. Outside Canterbury Rides, all set to go
2. and again - note Mr S's nice clean R1150GS on the end
3. mmmmmmmmmm, lunch
4. A little obstacle that caught a couple out
5. another play in the water
6. That nice clean R1150GS at the end of the day

I found the ride to be a little boaring when compared to the first Canterbury Rides adventure, but still worth it I think.
The first adventure had many hills and continuous winding, bendy roads with non-stop scenic views and is a ride i want to do over and over again. I doubt i'll repeat this last trip.
Could have a few good bits of video in there between the long dusty straights, just need time to pull it off the camera (got 2 jobs inline infront of this one but we'll see what i can do)

I would have been if not for the wifes school reunion in Nelson and the wrong licence for the bike (not the other way round aye :innocent:). Got back at 8 on Mon night and went straight to TA's to get the 250 so could sit the F test this morning.
Was pissing down for the full 45 mins so I'm now a little wet under the arms (WTF???). The tester knew an old boss from my 6 months at Transit so almost spent more time talking about that than doing the test. Outcome was positive though so I'm now ready to rumble with the DR650.

Been a while coming but here goes...
This wasn't just my first group ride it was my first off-road (gravel, dirt, bog, etc) ride. Hense I was a bit nervous, as last thing I wanted to do was spoil anyone elses day.
Firstly thanks to the KB crew for all the advice throughout the day, with a special thanks to Mr Sensible for letting me tag along behind you for so long, what you do with that monster of a bemmer and where you take it impresses the hell out of me.
Day started off outside Caterbury Rides, a quick scoot over to the port hills then up the first dirt track. A little nervous but made it up without too much trouble. Over the port hills tarmac section and had a bit of a front end slide leaning going over a cattle crossing. Thankfully managed to save it and ended up at the first gravel section took it slow and easy, got through with only being scared by the deep gravel section.
By lunch time had been though a lot of open roading, quite a bit of gravel, some dirt, mud, and a river bed. Managed to only fall off once (low speed in a muddy 4wd rut). By the end of the day my confidence had grown greatly, learnt a lot, got more comfortable on gravel, had some great fun in the waimak after the organised ride (til I got lost, lesson learnt).
Can't wait for the next ride. Didn't take many photos (too busy riding) but I'll resize and post what I took when I get a chance.

:o No worries. The GS is quite a versatile machine, surprises me that it's quite happy going where I take it. Having said that I'm still a learner.

Having said that I'm still a learner.I didn't see much of you on the actual ride, only at the stops, but the big GS's that I did see were going real well, they didn't seem to be having any problems getting through any of the rougher stuff relatively quickly, and the HP2 was going REAL well, and it wasn't just spitting out a few stones etc, but was leaving a real rooster tail of gravel in it's wake.

Trying to upload the 4 minute short to youtube and a 18Mb DivX version to another server but keep getting connection resets or something. My Yahoo messenger and/or MSN messenger also disconnect/reconect at the same time.
Starting to peeve me off.

Fixed my connection, replaced an ADSL Line Filter and everything seems ok now.
So I left it uploading and went to bed for a while.
You have a choice of DivX or Youtube. I think even the 12Mb DivX version is better quality than Youtube in places.
The far better quality one at 24Mb (http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/9/8/208927/24Mb_Q60_192x_CantyRides4minShort.avi) in DivX, this is by far the best zoom to full screen picture of all options here.
Here's a DivX version at 12Mb (http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/9/8/208927/12mb192x_CantyRides4minShort.avi). (Proberbly quickest to download for dial up in a hurry)
Or the You tube version... (You can't easily save the Youtube version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PJ58WA6G-g
Just added it to Google Videos. It came out ok there, better than the Youtube version and google videos are saveable too.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8928926402415408143
-8928926402415408143
Note:If you click the 'Google' button bottom right of the video controller then click the 'go to Google' words then you get the video in it's own page and can download/save and/or watch full screen.

Looks like you guys had a awsome day. Wish I could have been there.
That water crossing looks kinda deep though. Not supprosed that there were "incidents" with crossing it.
Keep up the good work TA.

Yeah, thanks everyone.

For those who hadn't heard the incident was my DR250 dieing in fright as soon as the front wheel was in the water.
Diagnoses is that the carby breather tubes on the suzuki design couldn't breath once under water effectively stopping the engine. That's why it was so easy to start once out the other side.
Fix: cut the breather tubes, put T's in them and add another tube on to the t's that runs up like a snorkle under the tank or seat where the airbox snorkle is.

Sounds like an easy fix TA. Quite silly that they'd design it with such a flaw like that in the first place though.

Just finished watching the DVD, great effort TA, captured the ride beautifully. The music wasn't too bad either, not as bad as you were making it out to be. (still not what I would listen though)
