View Full Version : Bike parks in Wellington Central

I work in Lambton Quay, north end, and choose to commute to work by bus for various reasons, which is irelevant here. However I do ride to work the odd days for various reasons and for the last several months I have been keeping a close tab on the various bike parks around the CBD. They are definitely getting more crowded, presumely due to the increase in riders coping with petrol prices, the popularity of scooters and the weather is also playing a part. I can see that with Summer coming we are going to be running out of room, and increasing risk of damage to our bikes.
Hence I have made initial enquiries to the Wellington City Councul regarding this issue and if they are intending to review the bike parks and increase them or size. One idea I had was to make use of some of that huge space between the library and the Council building opposite the current bike park. If restricted to scooters it could take about 20 or more, but there would have to be some thought given to how riders exit the park onto the street without endangering themselves or people walking through.
Anyway, if Wellington riders, or anyone esle for that matter, would like their say and try and get more free bike parks, please contact the WCC on :
www.wellington.govt.nz/services/parking/index.html
Cheers.

I have had a reply from the WCC and it looks like they are onto it. Its interesting to read how the parking space is calculated. Following is the reply, so local riders may want to follow up with their 10 cents worth.....QUOTE:
Thank you for your email bringing to our attention the number of motor cycle parking spaces we currently have in the Wellington area.We do have a list of motor cycle parks which I am currently trying to find and will forward this onto you when I do. We do get a few requests for more motor cycle parking either extending current parks or new parking being made available.
Ideally parking should be angled so the pedal goes into the kerb and with a road width of 2.5 metres given to parking spaces. I agree shelters or some form of protection should be given where possible to motor cycle parks due to heavy winds we get in Wellington from time to time.
We are seeing a current change in the way commuters are travelling into Wellington, bus use is higher and motor cycle , cyclists and pedestrian numbers are also on the increase.
We are currently looking at sites around the Wellington area as well as extending current motor cycle parks by taking away a car park space allowing 4 motor cycle spaces to become available. YAH !

'Ideally parking should be angled so the pedal goes into the kerb'Thats a tuff one. I reckon hes talking about which way the bike leans. Most bikes sidestand is on the left. Most riders back into a park right?. It'd be way easier to angle into a park than doing a two-point turn to get your machine straight-on like you have to do now (mostly). Reverse angle into a park, the sidestand (pedal?) is on the left closest to the curb.
Thats how I see it...It means squat of course to those that use the center-stand; and for them, parking perpindicular to the curb is the best option.
Thanks for the info. I'll be putting my 2c, I mean 5c...dammit! 10c worth in...
Twice last week I had to park in another area cos there was no space left at my usual spot. Aaahhhh yesss, the price you pay for free parking in the CBD...:done:

Try doing what Velox does and park on the footpath in proximity to a bike park...

Not outside the ANZ ?? Did anyone ever sort that guy out in the end? I go pass every working day and still see the bikes parked up against the building and on the footpath. Not sure if that clown is still moving other riders bikes though. Yes, I was going to say 2c then 5c but I thought we have to go with the times now.

Basically he means he knows absolutely nothing about motorcycles, but is doing his best to have you believe otherwise.

No. Outside the Ox.
But thats where the inter city police have 'their use only' parks.
I don't recall even seeing anything representing a bike park near there.

I don't actually use the bike parks cos they're always full by the time I get to work and I'm really not good at squeezing into the last remaining space due to the immense size of my arse! LOL (or is it my poor parking??? Nah, definitely the arse )
I park the bike on the end of the car spaces near the Intercontinental - heaps of space at the end of the parks and the parking wardens don't seem to mind at all (and anyway, where are they going to attach the ticket??).
Sheltered parks would be a great idea though :)
And 4 new parks....??? Ooooeeeee! Don't all rush into town at once...LOL
Would be great to have more parks. Wellington is fantastically bike-minded and it's great to see, but it would be even better if they would keep up with the number of riders out there. Will have to have a look at that link.....

If you like, I'll have a chat to some people here at work and see what I can find out about the bike parks.
I have connections...... ;)
PS - I work in the same department as Stuart....

I went into town at 10 this morning and parked the bike between 2 gsf600 bandits, i always figured bike parking in town would be better than what we do on rides cos they do it every day but no alas about half a bike park extra between every bike.

That's odd. It's just across the road from Velox' work as well...

I always found that if you got to the big bike park in Mercer street any later than 9am you were basically stuffed, and on a big machine like the ZX-10, there's no such thing as squeezing into a gap.
I will bring this to Stuart's attention.

"Big machine"? You cannot be serious! A ZX10 is just an overpowered moped that's made out of plastic. They weigh less than 200kg. Since when has that been "big"? (Well, for a motorcycle, that is)

Sorry to deviate a bit - but does anyone know the owner of a silver Katana that parks in Mercer St? I might be new to this, but that front tyre looks flat. Makes me cringe every time I walk past.

It's a pop-up headlight Kat, ay. Yeah I've seen that too.
A while back, I told a guy who parks a Bandit 1200 there that his tyre was quite deflated. It had been like that for a few days and he hadn't noticed. He was ever so grateful.

I saw that on on Friday but didn't notice the tyre. Looks like a 1100CC?
Please refer to the new thread if you wish to contribute to helping to expand free parking for bikes in Wellington. This one seems to have done its job.

Just found this post. Hey ya!
What really grinds down my undies is the gap between bikes...not being enough to pull your bloody bike upright from the side stand &*%$#$.
I park in Grey St & during the week had some plonker park their bike so close to mine that at a quick glance you'd think they were getting down & dirty together. Couldnt get the bike upright enough to even pull out..feckin dipshit.
Whew..feel better already!

Yeh I know the feeling. Had to bring the bike in earlier in the week and leave at 3 pm. Some bikes are just too close. Theres just too many riders using t6he parks now so hence the thread. I have been trying to see if the WCC would use all that space on the southern end of the library just for scooters and saw someone has been parking theirs during the week so perhaps they might get the hint.

Well, I can say that WCC are onto it at present.
As you know, I've submitted the list of all of the bike parks around town and also made aware of the severe limitations of these, being size wise and insufficient quantites.
Anyway, please do understand that changes don't get done overnight but I will persist with it and keep progress moving.
As I get updates I will inform everyone here.
Cheers,
NDMz.

Yeah the parking at the southern end of town is crap! My office is on Brandon St and unless I want to get to work at 7am and leave at 5.30pm its impossible to either get in or get out!

I park in tepapa carpark. just as you take a ticket from the box you ride up & to the right. on the way out you just get the thumbs up & they lift the barrier up for you. yup free bike parking at tepapa & it's undercover. You don't actually have to go near the ticket box on the way out as you can ride straight out around it hehehe. But shhhhh don't want it to get 2 full hehehe

Well, just finished riding back up from Wellywood to Dorkland - the three days I've been back in my old stomping grounds has been awesome. Just rode the bike basically everywhere after the KB ride on Sunday.
Parking in the capital is ... easy! I noticed bikes parked free and easy over most places and yesterday, I couldn't be bothered parking further away from Reading Cinemas (Tallageda...) and saw some other bikers had stashed their rides next to the phone boxes/trees on Courtney Pl. Decided to do the same, several hours later - no worries! Gotta love a city thats so bike friendly!
Shoulda read this thread before I left, so I wouldn't have to ride around looking for the bike parking places

Alrighties.....latest from WCC on bike parks....
I have in my hot little hands a copy of the (the latest) "Report of All 'No Stopping Except for Motorcycles' Resolutions in Wellington City".
Basically this is a report of each bike park, where it is, how big and when last updated. Very interesting
Do you all want me to PDF this and attach here or should I just email to those who want a copy?
Also an idea our Traffic Manager came up with is to put a map on the WCC website marking where all the bike parks are. What do you reckon about this?
Cheers,
NDMz

The only place I park in wellington is outside Wellington Motorcycles. I don't really get into looking around anywhere else.( only shop with Harleys.) I have had to park on the footpath a couple of times, but hey, where else is there?
