THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.
He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.
sad news indeed.

What next? Rolf Harris chokes on his felt pen lid?
I liked Steve Irwin, taunting wild animals has always been a passion of mine.
He died doing what he loved, better that then to grow old and watch the natural environment he loved and fought for being destroyed. He did good work.

It's always fashionable to bag the 'uncool' guys and talk up the do nothing celebs (such as Paris Hilton) and while I found his style a little grating with time... My hats off to the guy and what he did and his unwavering passion for the cause. Kudos to you Steve...
Sad for the family..... VERY sad but he had the luck to go doing what he believed in and in the great outdoors...
I'll probaly get smothered by the nurses in the home for telling them the billionth about this old bike I had and....

One hell of a life, not many can say they lived such a life and died doing something they loved.
Its to be celebrated, not cast as a tragedy and mourned.
Skyryder
4th September 2006, 18:46
He lost my respect when he took his kid into the croc pen. Later he tried to justify it. But having said that he did live life to the full and did more in his short forty odd years than many do in a life time so I'll give him his dues. There will be many who mourn him so he left his mark where it counts.

Well personally I thought he was whacked but good on him for being passionate about his thing ........ ummm..... reptiles.
I know that many 9 year old boys saw him as a King among men. And my nephew will be devastated. He does not have a Dad and croc man was his idol about whom he never shut up - that was annoying too.
Steve managed to retain a childs fresh view of the world without anything added. Except maybe a lot of adrenalin. Raised with the crocs as was his son.
Sorry for the wife and kids.

That's the price of celebrity. If the authorities hadn't said anything, the story would have leaked faster than a fast thing on speed. For lesser mortals the standard procedure is not to release the names of dead people (also the responsibility of the Police) until next of kin have been informed.

As much of a tragedy that it is, the inevitability of his demise was always there. The man could not just stand back and point at the snake/spider/croc, he always had to touch, he couldn't just look.

We were over there in June for our youngest daughter's wedding and while I stayed behind due to a shortage of transport, the rest of my family went to the Australia Zoo and watched Steve and his family while they clowned around putting on shows and generally having a ball together. My wife said it was touching to see the happiness, the carefree funloving attitude he and Terri displayed with the kids. Our No. 1 Son-in Law took photos as they had our little Grandson with them so they could show him as he got older.
Never thought it would be the last we would see of him.

I'm moved and impressed by this thread. I'd bling all of you if I could. So many threads here can be robust with any sentiment being roundly thrashed. All part of the fun normally, but this isn't something to joke about.
Just posted on another forum where there were a suprising number of "he's a dick" comments.
I felt very sad when I heard that Steve Irwin had died. For adults, the guy seemed like a 10 year old boy on speed. But for children, and some adults like me, he was just magic.
His enthusiasm and passion for wild creatures has influenced millions of young people. His documentaries introduced city kids and their parents to animals which were little known or feared and showed that every living thing has a beauty and it's place in the world.
I've taken my children to Australia Zoo twice and they loved it each time. I did too. Just watched a Steve Irwin doco a fortnight ago - he was checking out spitting cobras and komodo dragons. I've never seen such good footage of the dragons before.
I know many adults thought he was just too much but the guy was genuine. Really, he was just a big kid. Sometimes we should let go our grown-up cynicism and simply enjoy passion and enthusiasm.
A sad day.

Steve was an amazing environmentalist, conservationist and all round animal lover. He did more in his 44 years than most people will do in 10 lifetimes. From being in our homes in such a unique way, he has surely grown on us all. I for one am deeply saddened by the news.
Still, his memory will never, ever die - that atleast is a small silver lining.

If you spend your life annoying animals that can kill you, it should be no surprise when they do.
