View Full Version : Gladstone Cliffhanger Hillclimb - March 2007

Cliffhanger Promo
5th September 2006, 08:37
Ok, this is a call for 'expressions of interest'.

Cliffhanger Promotions have set a date for next years 'King of the Hill', Clifhanger Hillclimb.

It was decided to run the hillclimb on the weekend of 17/18 March - this is specifically to avoid coinciding with the Road Racing Nationals during the first two weekends of March.

Numbers of entries have been falling in recent years and the event lost a 'not so insignificant' amount of money last year. We would hate to see this event fall by the wayside due to lack of interest and support. We honestly believe that this is the premiere motorcycle road sprint race in New Zealand.

6.8km rising 1000ft and having a combination of flat out kinks and tighter twisties. Warren Turner (IOMTT Racer) has been a regular for the past few years and obviously rates this event as highly worthwhile. More info and photos are available at www.cdd.co.nz/hillclimb.htm - please note that a new website is also in the early stages of design.

There is also discussion going on behind the scenes regarding a rally during the weekend of the event.........watch this space.

Cliffhanger Promotions are currently applying for 'Championship Status' from MNZ - this is your chance to grab a National Title.:first:

In order to guage the potential number of entries, we would be grateful if you could register your interest in entering this event next year.

Please reply here with your expression of interest.

And good on ya's for getting right behind the event, you're right in saying it would be a shame to see it drop out, hope for a massive turn out this coming year.

Hell yeah, count me in!
I entered last year, see thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=26155 for my impressions on it.

I honestly believe this event will be HUGE this time.
I've received a lot of feedback from other riders that are keen to do this event.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you the organizers taking the decision to run it again considering last years turn out.

Also, Thank You from the bottom of my heart for not letting the event clash with the nationals!!!

To all you Nana's out there: Im going to be riding in the hill-climb. Its not just the racers that are expected to come along to this. Its about having fun too!

Im also considering putting up some of my own money as a sub-class prize (>=$50?)...watch this space.

Class possibilities:

Nekid bikes
Not a GSXR
918-920cc :Punk:
Bikes that retail(ed) new for less than $13000
Maybe some sort of 'out of town' class (no not you Sugi)

Reading through Sugi's report these people said that they would attend next time:
Kickaha, Slingshot (if Im riding youre riding buddy), Motoracer, Uncle B, kiwifruit (have your balls grown?:)).

This (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=26160) is Sugi's actual race report from last years event. Its a good read mate.

Good on ya Bruce.......who else from da big smoke wants a go ?

Also, Thank You from the bottom of my heart for not letting the event clash with the nationals!!!

Skelstar, Limbimtimwim, Mikey and I were at the meeting last night and it took a while to confirm a date - but the Nationals were a huge factor. We had to assure them that it would make a big difference in the number of entries - don't prove us wrong......

Oh yeah - I'm definitely in....

For as long as I can remember, I've always had this empty feeling inside of me. I have always known that I was put on this earth for something but I just didn't know what... I used to ask out of frustration... What is the reason for my existance??

Now I know..

This event is the reason why I exist. I was born to enter this race!

I may have missed the 2004 race and the 2005 race but there ain't no way in hell I'm missing this one too!

If you didn't gather what I'm doing from the above giberish, I'm in fellas! :D

Kia ora everyone, for you's, who don't know me I,ve got the dark blue VTR1000 honda that was at the sprints on sunday. I normally turn up for the sprints and the cliffhanger aswell. You can count me in this year, I have had an absense competing for the last two cliffhangers but still there to spectate, everytime I tell me bank manager i need tires instead of paying me mortage, he just laughs at me. Great event, awesome corners, teriffic crowd.

More info and entry forms available at www.cliffhanger.org.nz

Places are limited so don't wait too long to enter.

Also check out the 'hillclimb party', which is just up the road from the hillclimb - details available on the cliffhanger website.

I'm thinking of taking a bottle of Tequila to the party so I can have shots with all the competition......one for Jimmy, one for Lance, one for Jay, one for me (over my shoulder........), one for Jimmy, one for Lance..........you get the picture.

Call for volunteers to marshal/assist at the Cliffhanger Hillclimb.

Once again, I am asking for volunteers to assist with duties at the Cliffhanger Hillclimb - 17th and 18th March.

It looks like about 10 more marshals/assistants are needed.

Duties include:

Marshals at various points along the route. (you get a great view up close to the action - and a free non-alcoholic drink or two - it would pay to bring a hamper with a bit of food though)

Sausage sizzlers/drink sales/money handlers.

Time keepers.

And an MC to announce the riders etc.

A marshals' briefing will occur at about 8.45am on each of the mornings, so you would need to be there at about 8.30am. The day would end approximately 4.45pm.

Perhaps partners or friends of people entering could assist in some way ?

If you are keen - please advise by reply in here or PM me with your cellphone number.

What's the difference between Cliffhanger class and Support class? Age of bike (classic racing?) , horsepower...or just top guns vs joe publics.
I'm still searching for an event with a class for 800cc parallel twins only. I'd get a bollocking in the above 601cc class up against the 160hp+ 1000/4s!
Edit; make that euro twins only

Sorry but no. If it makes you feel better I am on the committee and had to pay my entry fee as well. No discount even.

Yep - Top Guns vs Joe Publics - I'm a Joe....King Joe at the moment......

There are only 5 individual classes this year - 2 cliffhanger classes, 2 support classes and sidecars.

I understand that top three in each class will get a medal, with overall winner getting a trophy. We should be able to offer some prizes though for various riders/bikes, as we have done in the spirit of the sprints.

Its a shame I've only been on the road once otherwise i'd probably enter on the Bandit :(

wait a sec...... this is a closed road right? can I tootle (no, seriously tootle) up the hill on the 636? or wont i be allowed to enter cos i dont have the license?

skelstar
13th March 2007, 08:22
I think that'll be fine Wasp (636). I'm pretty sure that there will be race bikes there.

Deano
13th March 2007, 09:56
Wasp - A day licence is included in the entry fee, so no worries there.

Riders are spaced at 1 minute intervals, and the fastest is 2.13s - how slow is tootling ? Haha

You could always sit at the back and go last, that way no one will definitely catch up to you. - with more track knowledge throughout the day, your times will also come down quite dramatically.

Alternatively, you could be a marshal ?

Wasp
13th March 2007, 11:09
No i meant i dont have my full license so will i sitll be able to ride it in the event?

i have no problems going last - but like i said "tootling", i dont know the road nor the bike....

yea i can marshall, actually thats a much better idea

edit: just looked at the cdd website - i see the fun/practice day on saturday is $30, how much is the sunday? what if i run on saturday and marshall on sunday?

Deano
13th March 2007, 11:32
MNZ rule 5-8-5 states no civil licence is required for Road Events where the road is closed under the LGA (which it is)

So I think you should be sweet to ride the 636.

Ignore the CDD website - it is obsolete. www.cliffhanger.org.nz is the current site, and entry forms are linked there.

Sat is $40, Sun is $40 for support class.

You could marshal on one of the days only no problem. Please confirm if you want to marshal and on which day, so I can let the committee know tonight.

Wasp
13th March 2007, 11:59

Thanks heaps to the people who have PM'ed me with offers of assistance to marshal.

Just to update.

Saturday - marshal's briefing is at 11.00am.
Sunday - marshal's briefing is at 9.00am.

Please be there 15 minutes early if possible.

The food at the mini rally/hill climb party on Saturday night is FREE. This includes Mexican chilli for dinner, and a cooked breakfast on Sunday, sausages, beans, eggs etc. Registration forms available from the cliffhanger website - (see my signature)

Prizegiving on Sunday evening (about 5.00pm) will take place at the rally site.

Prizemoney has been confirmed and will be given to the three fastest riders entered in the Cliffhanger Classes on Sunday. (not the top three in each of the two Cliffhanger Classes.)

1st overall - $500
2nd overall - $250
3rd overall - $150

Medals will be awarded to the top three riders in each category of the Cliffhanger and Support Classes. Certificates will be given to everyone (and have been revamped since the last sprints).

Some trophies are also on offer for various other sub categories (era, origin etc)

Some other prizes may be given also.

A record number of 'pre entries' have been received already - it's shaping up to be the most successful hillclimb yet !!

hmmm have to draw the line at MCing... but will take the food and drink!!

An example of Lissa's MCing:

"Now here comes Deano on a nice shiny blue bike, and snazzy helmet, which somehow clashes with his leathers... which look slightly tatty. An example of What Not to Wear when coming last" or something along those lines.

I pulled one 'out my arse', (as you so eloquently put it) at the Hillclimb last year to beat Jimbo as well.

Thanks to the marshalls and co for putting on playtime for us. My first go at the hillclimb and it was bloody good fun.
Had all the incredients;
Fine weather - yes is was the whole time I was there. We could see it was pissing down everywhere else in the rapa except where we were.
Good stretch of road to test our courage
The best part would be the bloody good company to share the buzz with.
And buzzing we all were fighting our own battles against the stopwatch.
Doing this sort of stuff really builds a sense of friendship amongst the riders giving it a go.
The trip home was... different. Full force gales over the taka hill in the rain then some of us had to break up a punchup between two car drivers who crashed into each other. One car spun sideways into an opposing car. Poor bugger was getting a bashing from a much bigger guy. Well done Deano, Fizzerman, Flame, Limbimtimwim and the rest who stopped. Never a dull moment on the hill. A couple of seconds difference and that car could have taken out half a dozen riders instead.
Funny how the only time we wanted the Cops on the Hill they took ages to get there and then half the Hutt force all arrive in a convoy.
Doubt that I will do Sunday now that my leathers are soaked.

Drew

Well, I've been wrestling with posting this or leaving it, but since I've been talking myself up for ages, here it is.

I was a couple seconds off the fast boys all morning, but consistantly third, then Jay Lawrence showed up with his GSXR1100, (thank fuck he didn't have his ZX6) and was only a second behind me. After that, Poos gave him a go on the 810, and he went two seconds quicker than me.

That was it, like a red flag to a bull, I turned it up, and managed the same time as him.

So after the practice day, I'm fastest equal with him, with Warren Turner very close behind us.

To sum up, I'm still aiming for the five hundy:yes:

I was coming back from Wellington in the cage, came round the corner and saw all the bikes parked up. I swear every hair on my body stood on end (and thats saying something). Was a very happy KB'er when I worked out it was two cages and no bikes. Rather proud as well to see the boys helping out.

What an awesome day, the first few runs a little scarey in the wet tho....infact A LOT scarey! Thanks to Motohaus Tyres for supplying me with something that would keep me upright!!! Though once the weather cleared it was MAGIC riding up there, I was dropping a second per run. Fizzer was flying, I cant believe how fast he and the other front runners Warren, Jay, and Jimmy were getting up that hill! Well done to you guys, With a very SPECIAL well done to DREW  You deserved it babe! And a HEUUUGE thanks to him for his encouragement, I wouldn't have found that last second in my final run if had not been for his believing in me and his encouraging words.

Congrats to you Deano for winning the Support Class, and for putting so much effort (and Nicky) into a fantastic day. I'll be back next year for sure, Hoping that a V-twin can do better than a 2nd place :second:

I turned up to see the last three rounds on Sunday. By that time a few people had decided they couldn't go any faster and had bowed out but others were still going hard. My comments for people I know as below.

FIZZERMAN
1st overall
Beating the champ of four years running deserves a big round of applause. After hearing your stories of dragging your knee, etc I'm looking foward to seeing photos/movies from the event. 174km/h average speed.

WHITE TRASH
4th overall
A bloody good effort on a bike that you hadn't ridden before and was optimised for a heavier rider. Nice to meet you WT.

DEANO
6th overall
1st supporting class
A quieter bike and not so many revs off the line made you launches seem slower than the guys grabbing a big handfull of revs but the truth is in the results showing you were real quick.

FLAME
7th overall
2nd supporting class
1st Twin
1st BEARS
1st Female
Went into the event wanting to be the fastest Y-twin. Was fastest up to the second last run when she pulled a high 1:48 and another aprilia rider pulled a low-mid 1:48. Went into the last run saying she wanted a 1:47 and pulled off 1:47.216 making her not only the fastest V-twin but the fastest twin. Also launched real well almost always seeming to be one of the quickest off the line. 150km/h average speed.

A big congratulations to all who entered.
Thankyou to the organisers and marshalls.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but Snow by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (which many of us associate with Bruce and Daryl after it was played at Daryl's funeral) was playing as the first bike was heading off the line at the start of the racing, and then played again when the bikes were heading down the hill after the last run. Top stuff Drew you were determined as hell on Sat. Pity the riders can't see the others in action themselves, apart from the start & finish. That vid says it all..full throttle all the way you crazy bugger. Imagine what you would do on a later model Gix !

What a fucken brilliant weekend, I'll post a report tonight but I've never had such a rush as what I did on Sunday.

It beats track riding ten times over. 260kph+ through blind kinks on a lane and a half wide road. Fucken outstanding.

Obviously big ups to Drew for his awesome win. Warren fought hard but couldn't come up with the goods.

Cheers for the praise, re organising etc. It was all behind the scenes for the hillclimb, as I was competing - so I did bugger all to help on the actual weekend.
I think I will have to step up to the Cliffhanger Class next year or risk being called a burglar. I was confident I had the support class in the bag after 4 runs so called it quits but I'm pretty sure I could have dropped below 1.40 with a couple more runs.

Sensei - I think Andrew must have previously won the 601 + cliffhanger class on the RSV1000, but not overall fastest time.

Hopefully we may get this televised next year, just need some bigger sponsors to come on board.

It can only get better !!

What a pack of tossers. The DomPost ran a large spread today devoted to the exciting events held over the weekend in ... wait for it...the Wairarapa. Oh yeah there was the balloons over Masterton. The frontier gunowners playing wanky cowboys in Martinborough. Then there was the 150 year Carterton anniversary/sesqui celebrations. Then lets not forget the joggers doing the round the vines, sweat until I look even uglier challenge.
That its folks. Apparently nothing else exciting happened in the rapa last weekend. No other annual events run that attract a loyal following, no gatherings of people to celebrate there fav past time. No brave souls risking their lives and limbs in the name of racing. No... nothing else happened according to our trusty newspaper.
I must have been dreaming about the fun I had on Saturday.

We thought about this but the quality of footage wouldn't be that great - ok for you tube, but we want to get televised coverage on Ssangyong Speedweek or Shell Helix Motortsport. We would need about 10-12K to have 6 or 7 cameras filming, with a half hour slot on on of the programs.

Hopefully the promise of televised coverage may sway some sponsors to part with some dosh for next year. 5 or 6 sponsors with $2k each. For this they would get naming rights of a 'class', advertising banners etc along the route, link from the Cliffhanger website to their own, promo tent at the spectator/pit area, and mention on all fliers, promo material and magazine articles.

For all those who were there and want their average speed.

I'm told the course was 4.5km long exactly. If so divide 16200 by your time in seconds to get your average speed in km/h.

Example:
If on my GN250 I did the short track in 3min 45.276 seconds my time in seconds would be 225.276s

16200/225.276=71.9

My average speed would have been 71.9km/h

Now where is the geek alert smilie

You've heard of reverse psychology, right?

Jim2 ,thanks for the use of your back protector , I'll get back to you shortly (I promise :innocent: ). Had a go on Saturday which was my first run at one of these events. Like MD was have trouble getting the head around using both sides of the road. Was a real blast and managed to improve by 3 seconds per run over the 6 runs. Was cool taking the first sweeping corner at 180 + (slow by others standards)

Thanks to the people that ran the event , offered advice and encouragement. Not event the wet ride home could dampen the natural high. This was the best thing I've done on a bike (Wife was wondering when I was going to shut up :dodge: ) Unfortunatly , no wets , so leathers were still soaked through on Sunday. Decided to flag it so regreted not going. ........ Next year .....
