View Full Version : Where's it gone?

I finally put the Bandit on the dyno yesterday. It developes a screaming 76hp!
Where the hell has the other 30 gone?
My K1 was putting out 90 plus with the jetting miles lean. 111 when that was fixed.
Further investigation is needed.

Well, according to the dyno at Henderson Motorcycles.

That makes sense, they use a Dynojet too I believe.
All the Bandits we've dynoed have exceeded 100hp.
Houston, we have a problem.

It feels flat at high revs/WOT. Our dyno is conservative, but my K1 was done on a Dynojet too. This one has always felt less grunty than the K1, but I put that down to being new and tight and not having the airbox mod done.
We're going to try a new CDI unit first.

HP is good but I also like the torque of the VF four engine for touring and overtaking in top gear. No mucking around. Hope you sort out the problem Lou as its something that may be effecting so many members. Perhaps the local Suzuki agents should be checking some of their stock sold. It isn't part of the warrantly service from what I have been told. Cheers.
PS My little 600 is suppose to have 86 HP at stock.....

Mine still wheelies off the throttle, then goes flat. I can't see it being carboned up at such low k's.
The standard ones have a very restrictive exhaust and airbox, I've put a Micron on and rejetted. Air/fuel ratio is damn near perfect from 3000 - 10000.
I took the bike into Colemans last night, they gave me a bog standard K3 Bandit to use. It's a rocketship over 6000 compared to mine.

Sounds like an interesting idea except, :killingme but but but but,,, it doesn't even have 25hp! Will have to convert the engine into some sort of black hole machine running at negative hp.
Rode the bike today, it's just as powerful as before and the engine has not grown a 2nd piston either,,, so unless your HP is sitting in a recliner chair within my FXRs engine, it's just not there.

Sarge was exercising his cultural sensitivity when you bought it, Lou. He knew you were Italian , see, so he had them install the optional Italian engineering module.
You will find that you can recover your missing 30 hp if you ride with the left pillion footrest down, and the right front (only) indicator flashing, in a northerly or westerly direction. But only before noon.
During the period of the full moon, if you do the above, and in addition are running on reserve and put the rear brake on just enough to trigger the brake light , but without actually having the pads touch the calipers, you will recover not just the missing 30hp, but an extra 30 hp as well. But only if you are wearing a red helmet.
Italian machinery. Its like that. He thought it would make you feel culturally safe.

IS #41 THE BASE ASSEMBLY ON THE ABOVE FICHE THE PROBLEM , WE HAD A BIKE WHERE THE PINK WIRE NEED TO BE CLIPPED CAUSE IT HAD THE ANTI WHEELIE FUNCTION RETARDING THE IGNITION
MacD
9th September 2006, 13:51
Older Suzukis like some models of the RF had the pink wire ignition retard system. The Haynes Bandit manual shows the 2nd/3rd gear position wires as being the red/black and green/blue pair in the 4-way connector behind the LHS side panel. The blue wire is the neutral wire and black/white is earth.
Maybe it would be worth trying the bike with the gear position wires disconnected in case, as Winja suggests, there's a fault and its running permanently retarded?
Lou Girardin
9th September 2006, 16:15
The Dyno is the latest Dynojet, we are the agents for them. Dave and Gavin have done more Dyno runs than I've had hot feeds, so I trust them. They've had a 212hp turbo Gixxer on the rollers without slip.
When Gav did the initial run it was slightly rich on full throttle, he drilled the airbox to lean it out and got it right first time. Just like he did with my last Bandit. He guessed the correct jets first time out. He knows his stuff.
I've had the 2/3 gear wire disconnected and connected - no diff.
Today I've tested the TPS, it's working fine.
The next step is dynoing Pixies bike and depending on the result we'll swap ECU's.

Are all of your cylinders firing, spark plugs getting enough juice and cylinders getting enough fuel?
Have you done a compression test?
Did you suddenly notice a drop in HP or only found out when placed on the dyno?
Since it's putting out 1/3 less HP than the factory indicates it should, couldn't you just take it back to Suzuki to fix or are they paying for the tab of this little hide-n-seek adventure?
Lou Girardin
11th September 2006, 22:09
It runs fine at normal revs, no missing, no surging, clean as a whistle. I'd noticed it wasn't as grunty up top as my K2, but you tend to ride these things in the mid-range. There's no need to wring them out 80% of the time. That's why I didn't notice it so much.
Lou Girardin
13th September 2006, 18:23
Update. We dynoed Pixies bike today, it's exactly the same spec as mine.
Result - 105hp at the wheel. For some unknown reason it's also running richer than mine so with the jetting corrected there's probably 2 - 3 hp to come.
So now we've eliminated any possiblity that the mods I've done have lost 30hp.
