I first saw Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Ben Townley race in France at the Motocross Des nations last fall, and was extremely impressed – Ben was the only rider to keep Ricky Carmichael in his sights in that final moto. Moving to Florida for his 2006 debut in America, an unfortunate serious knee injury kept him sidelined until Red Bud, where he finished fifth overall – with a podium in moto two! A week later Townley separated a shoulder; but now Ben’s back at Glen Helen. From what I have seen, Ben Townley is an AMA Motocross Lites Championship contender in 2007
What do you say Ben – are you 100%?
Yeah I’m getting back there; it’s been a rough ride this season. But I took some time and went back to New Zealand to get my shoulder healthy again. It was a grade three separation, so obviously it took a little bit of time to recover and get back on the bike. I feel good; but obviously we are going to find out today (find out we did, as Ben set the best lap time in the second seeded Lites practice)!
Ben, if we go back to Red Bud, you impressed everyone, except for maybe yourself.
Well the last race that I had done was the Motocross Des nations; I had a couple of really good rides, where I won my heat and then was second in the last heat of the day – so I was pretty happy. I wanted to carry that on into 2006, but then with my injury I had so much time off; I didn’t realize that that gate time, or track time was that important. But at Red Bud I had great fitness in both motos and it showed; still I wasn’t where I wanted to be – and my starts probably hampered that too. All in all it wasn’t too bad, I guess I just expected more.
Going into this weekend, what are your expectations?
Well, I want to do well; I’ve been training hard and everything has been going very well. I don’t see why I cannot go out there and run at the front – there should be no reason why I cannot. If everything goes normal, I should be up there. I’m looking to putting two good motos together and get back to racing. We need to finish off this season well, at this race, the Des nations, and a race that I am going to do in New Zealand and stay away from the injuries that have bugged me this year. I want to have a good mental frame going into next year.

Glen Helen practicing saw Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Ben Townley set the best lap time of the day in the Motocross Lites class. Also setting great times were Boost Mobile Yamaha of Troy rider Andrew McFarlane and Red Bull KTM’s Mike Alessi. Star Racing Lucas Oil Yamaha rider Sean Collier was fast as well.
Makita Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael did the best in the Motocross class with Kawasaki’s James Stewart close in second best.

If he can stop hurting himself. 3rd not bad for first time back as I expect his race fitness would not be up there with the rest of them after so much time off. Villipoto sure spanked them all though.

They are calling our Ben a South African! What an insult! I sent them an email informing them that Ben is a New Zealander and that we are not a part of Africa or Australia despite what they might have heard LOL!
