Yeah, that earth moving machine is huge compared to the 'tiny' full sized bulldozer it scooped up.
When the boys play with big toys, they are BIG toys! Would be little hard to throw those out of their sand pit.

I did 3yrs working at the Huntly opencast mines and drove & saw some pretty impressive machines, but nothing anywhere near that colossus.

One of the guys I worked with ran-over & squashed a 3mth old double cab hilux ute with a Trex dumper, that took some explaining

I did 3yrs working at the Huntly opencast mines and drove & saw some pretty impressive machines, but nothing anywhere near that colossus.



Jill was born in Taihape and worked for her father putting in roads and airfields for local farmers mostly, though they did work on the Mangaweka Deviation.

They were well known to Goughs and she's in the Gough, Gough and Hamer mag.

I had to court her on the bulldozer and I can tell you the side toolboxes are not that comfortable! (Not that it bothered me too much as I was somewhat distracted at the time...)

Back on topic... Did you guys see that Discovery channel programme, one in the "Building the Biggest" series? They had what looked like standard digger only that it scoops up 55 ton of material in one go. Not on the scale of the behemouth shown here but pretty impressive nonetheless. I think they reffered to the one in here.

Back on topic... Did you guys see that Discovery channel programme, one in the "Building the Biggest" series? They had what looked like standard digger only that it scoops up 55 ton of material in one go. Not on the scale of the behemouth shown here but pretty impressive nonetheless. I think they reffered to the one in here.

That was a single bucket face shovel which was/is a monster of it's class. This Krupp rotary drum face shovel is one of a few around the world.

At Huntly the company I worked for purchased The Hitachi Face shovel that Doug Hood brought into the country when they had the contract, it took 2wks to transport from Auckland in bits another 2wks to assemble on site & had a workshop just for it as well as a truck & trailer fuel tanker just to service it, and 5 dumpers struggled to keep up with it.
We had a few 5130 Cat face shovels also along with a brace of D10s etc

The smallest excavator on site was a Hitachi EX200 and it's job was to maintain the water run-off ditches

thats my old baby :rockon: TR100 Trex, spent most of my time in that or a 748b Cat motor scraper
