Heavy rains overnight have flooded roads across the lower North Island, police say.

State Highway 35 was closed 6km south of Te Araroa, near Gisborne, after part of the road fell into a river, a Police Southern Communications spokesman said today.

Flooding also closed SH43 on Heao Rd in Ruapehu district and the Manawatu Gorge remained closed today after a rock fall last night.

The Wanganui River was running high today, but was unlikely to burst its banks at the 11am high tide.

"It would have to rise much further before it flooded the city," the spokesman said.

Some residents of the Palmerston North suburb of Highbury were evacuated last night, but floodwaters were subsiding today.

The rains were causing motorists problems across the lower North Island, with a slip appearing in Wellington's Ngaio Gorge, and flooding on SH1 between Taupo and Turangi.

Both roads were passable if driven carefully, the spokesman said.
