I believe that's around 560KPH?

FWIW, the girlfriends family have just come back from Bonneville with the record for Gas powered Vintage Roadster, 229mph (368kph) in their '34 coupe. I believe they are the first Kiwi's to hold a land speed record over 200mph.

Also another Kiwi got a record at speed week this year, in his flat head V8, I think around the 189mph mark? Other than mention in a few mags like Petrolhead and Hot Rod, no word in the mainstream media of their efforts.

I was doing a story for the Army News about their new JCB backhoe tractors and the guy from JCB in the UK mentioned that a tweaked version of the same engine used in the backhoes had just set the world land speed record for a diesel engine. Set on August 23 by RAF Wing Commander Andy Green, who drove JCB’s Dieselmax at an amazing 563kph, setting a new record for a diesel-powered car.

Andy Green is the same guy who took Thrust SSC through the sound barrier at Black Rock desert - a real ice man. If you want an absolutely gripping read, Richard Noble's book on Thrust can't be bettered.

Even built their own engine! That's an amazing effort. Thanks for the links Motu, and Blackbird - I also enjoyed the read about the ThrustSSC. I knew the story, but its nice to get some more detail on it all. Interesting that the SCTA site still lists ACK-Attack with the fastest speed in the 3000cc class at 328.304 mph, or is it just that now speed week have finished SCTA are no longer the official timers?

Manning has been around a long time,I have a magazine at home about the bike Cal Rayborn rode,may also have one about the Don Vesco bike too.Everyone thought Vesco was crazy,taking on the LSR,set by a Harley with a couple of little Yamaha 2 strokes,but he did it! I might do a little reading about a young Manning tonight....
