View Full Version : FREE Suspension set up offer
Shaun
10th September 2006, 10:11
Hi, I keep reading about people having trouble getting there bikes to handle, and I see a lot of posts asking for help and advice as how to modify there set ups to make there bikes handle.
I live in New Plymouth where I run my buisness from, I am offering to any Kiwibiker Free set up service for your bikes
The Free part applies to Set up of your standard suspension ie, no parts added, no parts taken off the bike, just a messure up of your current set up, and changes to those settings, basically a 30 minute process!
From doing these messurements and mods, I would be able to 99.9%Gaurantee that you will leave happier than when you arrived, I also live on one of the best test roads in the country!
We may discover after doing all the base set up that you may require different springs, and or different fork oil, and possibly even different fork oil level, if so, that is where I would make any potentuall income from.
If any one wishes to take this offer up, please call me on my cell 027-2559143 or send me an email, PLEASE do not send me pm's on this!
If you do not know who I am, ask around, I am not saying I know it all, I am saying I have 20 years of succesfull racing behind me which has shown me a lot of tricks.
No Pm;s Please

So you couriering yourself and the bike down there? Wouldnt it be easier to ride?
Things like static sag and setting it up for your weight etc generally need the bike and the rider (or someone of the same mass.....

Sensei tweaked mine on the CBR and what a great difference it made! I've been around a couple of times to the shop to say hello, but you have not been there. I figure it has something to do with me doing shiftwork and doing strange hours. Will keep trying. As for the naki KBers, your foolish if you do not take Shaun up on this offer!

Closed the shop in town mate, I operate from home now out in the country, it allows me to keep my over heads very low, allowing me to offer services like this, as well as it means I really get to pick and choose the work I do which is building project one off bikes for people from parts I import directly from America and race bike building and maintanence of the above as well as Chassis servising for road bikes and my suspension service being as I am an Ohlin's agent, and parts and acc dealer.

I had noticed that the former premises was empty and was thinking that you may be doing that mobile business that you had mentioned here previously.
Your offer is brilliant and I'd love to take you up on it immediately, but next week I'm going to a seaside resort/penguin colony called Phillip Island or something like that...:bye:
But I did put your number in my cell phone.

Good on you for the offer Shaun, and it obviously has the potential to generate further income.. But did you notice where all the people live that want there bikes sorted?????? Whats that say ol chum.
Hey Mate, I know exactaually what you are saying but, to set up as I would like to in Auckland would take at least 80K, as well as I believe once you jump into the big A for buisness reasons, You really get caught up in the chasing the $ due to over heads and so on, my focus of my buisness would have to change from a buisness based on Passion, experience, plessure,Income.
Apart from the fact that once you have lived in Taranaki, it is pretty bloody hard to find better, we have every thing out door you can think of around here, I get to see my mountain every day, my daughter and me get to go and chase the farm animalls around every day and so on.
Maybe in a couple of years time, but I am picking some one is going to come along and offer me a Mega sallary soon to Go work for them some where in Auckland I am guessing.

Hi Shaun, I sent you an email, but it was through the kiwibiker email thingy and I don't know if you got it or if it was sent to an inactive email address.
Anyway, I am another in desperate need of suspension setup. I am a complete noob with regard to suspension adjustment as pretty much all of my previous experience has been on the completely non-adjustable CBR250RR.
I have now come into possession of a very nicely modified CBR600RR that is going to take me quite some time to pay off, and it has an Ohlins rear shock and revalved front forks. I took it out on the practice day before the last VMCC meeting, and the suspension was way too hard, I will be at the next Manfeild practice day just before the penultimate VMCC round, and plan on racing it in F2 at that meeting. However, until I have it set up properly, I'm going to be crapping my pants riding it hard, as last time, I was losing my footing from hitting bumps, and ended up with my nuts pressed on the tank.
So I suppose my first question should be, will you be at Manfeild on the 22nd or 23rd of September?
And if so, will you have the time and the inclination to help me setup the bike so that I can ride it as hard as I've been riding my 250?
If not, I might be able to get it to you on the Sunday afterwards, but it's quite difficult to get there at any other times seeing as I'm from Auckland.
If you aren't able to do it on either of those two days, I totally understand, cause I have seen how busy you are at the track, and I'm sure that I'll be able to get some other KB'er to have a crack at it.
[Edit] I notice that you don't plan on doing any work on race days which is totally fair. I could get the bike to you on the Friday the 22nd, it just means that I'll have to miss the practice day. I would gladly miss the practice day to get the bike set up properly.
Cheers.

I think the springing on my 1970 triumph is overcoming the dampening... I just can't find the adjustment points. Sitting a case of beer on the tank seems to help but I'm developing an addiction to beer and as the ride goes on, the load gets lighter and I end up back where I started (except I no longer care)
Can you help?
No, I can tolerate the harsh ride - I just need more beer...

as your bladder fills from drinking the beer....urinate back into the empty beer bottles....I may suggest having one beer before riding and filling that one with water....this will help with the time delay of your old kidneys curning out urine and a slow pace....to keep the balance!

There must be some one up there doing it, but they will probally charge more than the cost of fuel etc to get down here and back, being as it is Auckland you are talking about

Have to say a big thanks to Shaun for setting up my bike, feels so much more planted now and not saggy in the rear when getting back on the juice out of corners. Looking forward to giving it a good run on some road I know.
Highly recommend Shaun to anyone who has suspensions problems or is in need of accessories. Top bloke, very helpful and very knowledgable....and he makes a good cuppa coffee too. :niceone:
The ride down was pretty good other than the freezing cold fog through the waikato. Pretty good roads right the way through really, only took us 3 hours including a 15min stop in Otorohonga.
Shaun I will let you know how it feels once I've taken for a good ride on some local roads, but so far so good!.

Thank you so much for your time today Shaun!
Before: Understeer, rough ride.
After: Understeer virtually eliminated, much smoother ride (especially considering the rooted rear shock)
Best way that I can illustrate the effectiveness of the set up is as follows:
Ol' cooked bread here got a bit confident on a downhill dusty lefthander on SH43 (beautiful road), causing both wheels to step out in perfect symphony (first time that it's happened to me like that, normally it's one, then the other, and all a bit ragged)...
The balance was sweet! The bike realigned itself without drama, perfectly smooth, no unwanted wiggles or twitches...stunning...flattering too.
I owe ya Shaun. Hope to send business your way when I can.
Thanks again,
Phil
(PS: sorry it took me about 10 seconds to realise it was you waving to me at Te Kuiti...3 hrs sleep the night before...brain was beginning to shut down)

You're welcome mate, you did look quite proud of your self when I saw you at Te Kuiti. Bloody great we got it a lot better for you, and apart of why I decided to this was, I know some of you guys push along on ya scooters ( Only in the write conditions of course) and I kept reading about bad handling bikes and stuff like that so, I did what I am doing to try to give you guys a much smoother/safer ride when youre out playing:scooter: Racing!
And I would be a liar if I did not say it is a marketing idea for my buisness, and I still get a huge buzz out of making bikes better, it is what I do best in life.

now i'm truely versed in the art of suspenders... i can sort you welly crew out!
Got a set of new rubber today from Cycletreads.. man what a HARD decscion.. i went with the Pilot Powers in mind, however as soon as i got there chatting with Budgie i was almost gonna get the 208 rr's again. They're wicked although not so mileage friendly.
so i ummed and ahhhed about the Pilot Powers, the 208rr's the 208 Qualifiers and the m3's and said.. what the heck.. lets try the tyre everyones ravin about! i succumbed to the Pilots
So the bike got jacked up and Budgie starts tinkering.. You need new front pads, knackered and worn uneven; oh and your suspensions too soft.. so an hour later, some major tinkering and $630 lighter i ride out;
Now first impressions .. my steering damper must be cranked right up as this is as stiff as a board to steer, hard to counter steer :( slow to drop into a lean but does go over smoothly, they don't dive in like the 208's.. So i check.. nup, the damper is set right!!! Is this due to the profile of the Pilots or the hardened suspension??
a good run out tomorrow will tell, bed my brakes in and scrub the tryres
Any one wanna buy a 2005 cbr600rr?

That's unusual Boomer. Shaun screwed your rear preload up heaps as it was way to soft and they reckon it still was??
Now, I can only say, check your tyre pressures. The guys in the tyre shops are generally very good but you need your own quality gauge and check them when they are cold in the morning. Others will be along shortly to tell you the pressures you need on your bike but I reckon 37-38 rear and 35-36 front. It sounds like they may be on the soft side if your steering is tight.
Also, I take it your front wheel, fork and bars go from side to side easily when you have the front wheel off the ground? If not you may have a kanckered steering head bearing or it's up too tight.

Weird huh! Shaun told me to set them at 29 & 31 which i did on the 208's and she was ok on teh coro run; she did still feel a little squashy ( is that descriptive enough???) like a marsh maloow even
The shop set the pilots at 36/38 i think. I'll check the pressures tomorrow and check teh steering as you suggest Paul :2thumbsup

Check your tyres are 36 front and 38 rear. When they put my new tyres on they put 42 or somethin in the rear, I soon sorted that.

wind on more rear preload....a couple of turns....then test.....then a couple more then test....see if it feels better
running wide is usually because your rear is squating to much while powering out or corners....a lil more low speed compression wouldn't hurt either...

Hey Boomer, you ride alright mate. :) I always tell people it takes a minimum of 5,000kms to get to know your bike well enough to push it harder and 10,000kms is way better.
At the end of the day, go out, enjoy yourself, try not to prove yourself to anyone, ride within your own personal limits, not someone elses and then you will be a round a long time to enjoy your motorcycling.
After the last Coro loop and watching yet another mate have a real bad accident, the roads just aren't up to going hard. One week they can be fine and the next week stuffed just where you don't expect it. It's becoming a game of Russian Roulette riding hard on the road.

That was actually a genuine Question Paul?
Yes - I just didn't ask it very well.
I've improved things on the damping and spring rate by customising components but fitting something with external adjustment is the ultimate answer and thats beyond my ability. I'm happy with the improvements made to the Triumph thus far but I want to make it better. I realise the results are pathetic compared to whats possible on modern vehicles. Certainly it's of limited interest to people and belongs elsewhere.

Thanks mate, The thing that forced this issue was people ordering stuff from me and then deciding not to take it! I do not like being used by any one

At the track day Shaun set up several bikes in our group.
What can I say?
This guy is farken awesome!!!
All reported a distinct improvement.
Even though we couldn't pinpoint or accurately describe the issues we faced he was able to zero in on the source and correct them even with rather vague descriptions.
What a bloody awesome country we live in! To be able to get access to people of this calibre and at such a reasonable cost.

Agree with you the CaN, Shaun is awesome!. I had some funny handling issues with the K6 and got Shaun to sort it for me, his work is simply worth every penny. If you want your bike handling better/safer then get in touch with Shaun, you will be very surprised at how much better he can transform the handling in your machine. :niceone:

The trick to stop that is you take a 10% desposit. Then when they dont show for it you have the 'it' and 10% of its value!
The 80 bucks sounds worth it when you are back up to bike fixing :yes:
