I'd like to have a small container to take 1 or 2 litres of gas for long trips. Any ideas on where to get one as I've only seen 5 L containers?

You Can Get Aluminium Fuel Containers From Some Camping Shops, Also Ive Used I Litre Meths Plastic Botlles They Seem To Hold Up , Or You Could Buy The Silkolene Fuel Injector Cleaner In The Steel Can Then Use The Can Afterwards

Coke bottles work well - Available in a range of sizes, and cheap. They don't leak, and the fuel doesn't seem to attack the plastic. I've carried them on the back of the bike for the longer trips out the back of beyond, and I've got one that's been used to store premix for the weedeater for a few years now with no problems. The only downside is you can't fill them up at the service station - they wont let you because they're not an approved container.
In fact the only container I've ever had any trouble with was one of those 4L red plastic purpose made jobs. The bloody thing leaked all over the back of the bike around the exhaust :gob: No such problems with the coke bottles though.

Yeah, Coke bottles are made from PET, a polar polymer so their oil/petrol resistance is pretty high.
The cheap plastic fuel-tanks are made of HDPE so the petrol actually slowly dissolves the tank over time.

Yep, I'll second that. I do it when I'm leaving early in the morning and once you use them just pop them in a rubbish bin somewhere and it frees up your pack again.

CT90's have a 5l (or was it 2l?) tin attached to them, anyway, it's steel. Ring the wreckers.

*sneaks in quietly* if ya gonna use a coke bottle or other container...youll have to do it yourself, as station staff are not allowed to fill non-purpose tins/containers/bottles...too much liability on that staff member if the thing blows up *slips away again*

I fill my own at home, or at the rally site, before I head out and then just have to top up the tank on the way out on the ride.

The kathmandu bottles are great. We use them as oil overflow on our racecar.
They also have a wider lid so you can fit the petrol nozzle in (if you want to try filling it at a station)

Was in Newworld today, got some cheap ($2.49) 750ml Aluminium "SUNY sports bottles" (in black of course) but with several colours to choose from  Might last slightly longer than a coke bottle and only around twice the price:third: Will have to see how they hold up though...

if its only a small amount, we pretend we dont see [ie, less than a liter, and going to be used asap] but a large amount, i refuse to do it, and tell the customer why and if it goes to shit, then it is their fault as they were warned. havent had that for a while though...last one was a bit of diesel in what looked like a jam jar. didnt know what the hell it was till the customer said. glass i think would be ok, but youd have to watch not to drop it. also hard to pour out of.

Have gone the Coke bottle way. Got a 1.5 litre bottle and filled it from my own mower gas container, leaving some ullage. Filled it a couple of days ago and it looks good.
I can get 26 km/litre, so that's going to get me 30 km. If I finally run out of gas then I deserve it!

I can not see why you could not use them a few times, at least.
After all a plastic bag can be folded more than once.
I think that they are just covering their butt's.

Used two 2-litre Coke bottles with my '81 Sporty to give me a bit more range, the tank seemed to only hold about 10 or 11 litres.
Shoulder got sore with the weight of the 4 litres of fuel hanging off it though.
Never had leaks or petrol disolving the bottles etc, biggest problem was finding a spare empty plastic bottle at the side of the road to cut the bum off and use as a funnel.

Put some petrol in the 1.5 ltre coke bottle and it looked a very pretty pink colour. Went for a ride yesterday, with a low tank, and decided to take my reserve bottle. Hey, it's changed to a pee colour. Is this normal, stored out of the sun.

Hmmmm...backpack.....flammable liquid.....strapped to my body.......sounds like a suicide bomber to me!
There is no frikkin' way I want to come a gutser and have the possibility of burst petrol containers strapped to my body while the bike is sliding and sparking it's way down the road.
Bad things happen to good people and if you're thinking "it'll never happen to me"....think again.

And how often HAS it happened?
I had the bottles in an old army bag hanging off my shoulder, not perxactly 'strapped to my body'
And next time you are bored fill a 2-litre bottle with water, find a quiet road and get a passenger to drop said bottle out of the car window at about 80kph, I've a good idea it won't burst and if in a thick canvas bag even less likely to burst.
BUT yes, I do take your point!! (And have no need to do anymore)

I have seen an ad on here about some purpose built extra tour tanks, strapped onto the back of the bike holds 2-3 litres, steel construction. I have done a search but couldn't find the link sorry. It may be the same kind of thing from Kathmandu. Seems like a good idea to me though.

The Moto Guzzi guys in the USA use a 'fuel cell' on the rear of the bike and an electric fuel pump to transfer contents to the main tank. Some of them can go 700km plus without getting off the bike..... Crazy yanks..

Try the tops off of waterbottles. You know, like the sports water ones. I have to carry two stroke oil with me on a long trip (not for too much longer though:cool: ) and found they work well.

Lids on coke bottles are a softer plastic. Doesn't it eat through the lid seal? Do you have to pack em bottles so they can only standing upright?

Hey, it's changed to a pee colour. Is this normal, stored out of the sun.I don't know about the colour change, any I've stored for any length of time has had 2 stroke oil mixed with it, and still worked fine. The stuff carried on the bike is only in the container for a few hours at the most.

The guy riding behind me wasn't very impressed when he rode his nice shiny new ZX1100 (I think that's right - litre sized ninja a few years ago) through a coke cloud. It was a very sticky bike when we stopped a few km up the road and he didn't seem to see the funny side :baby:

Yeah id say you could call that normal. Petrol goes off over time, and being stored in smaller containers makes it go off faster. To change color it must have been sitting for awhile. tiny containers like dirt bike fuel bowls, can make the fuel go off within a week or two, to the point they wont start till you get fresh fuel thru. At 1.5L It`ll problery still burn, but i wouldnt expect top performance from it.

I have to say that tank size was the only reason I didn't look at a Super Duke. There have been a few deals on second hand ones too. I guess there are compensations though.:devil2:
