For those of you out at the Have-a-go day on saturday, you would have seen my new beastie. Well not NEW as such, but new to me.
She is Elsie, an Rd250LC, and goes damn well for a piece of 80's engineering. Came from Auckland this time round, but was from Nelson previously i have been told.
After saturdays first outing at Ruapuna for the have-a-go day, we have now race-prepped her....thats race speak for butchering my poor baby and taking off all the pointless stuff like lights and indicators etc... I'm getting to learn all this jargon. ;)
She was an odd colour of black, and white, now going mostly black till I can figger out what else...I'm thinking silver decals to go with new leathers (Ta muchly to MotoEquip for those)...I like to be different from the other RDs out there, besides being at the back. And given that her rego'd colour is black, why change something that she is used to.
And of course her number will be 99....ah she is a darling to ride too
Pic 1: heres the first piccy of her, before any changes
pic 2: Me and speedy lining up to go out on Saturday
Pic 3: down the straight
will get some more when the damn camera battery has charged up!

Nice, I had an RZ for a while. Some low bars & 30mm spacers to preload the front springs a bit made it turn much better & cost bugger all.
Cheers

And given that her rego'd colour is black,
Black was a factory colour and one that my bike may yet end up in

do they still have a good following on the track and still have the 350's, and also can you fit the two disc set up front (as per class rules)?

In the club we race with theres 3 other LC's a couple of 400's etc, and all ya need is the fork leg off a 350 and you can race twin stopers.
I had a spin on Elsie on Saturday and was impresed with the lightness and go/stop thing... makes my post classic Kat seem the pig of all pigs :scooter:

yeah well the 'RZ' aint EXACTLY an RZ...its a combo of RZ250 frame and FXR 150 motor, to race in buckets (thanks to Stanko!) So hence the odd name, was trying to think of an easy way to name her, a combo of RZ and FXR, so RZ 'R' came to mind.

I first started racing on 250LC's in the UK years ago, and providing you look after the motor, was a cracking piece of kit to ride and cheapish. how about new and secondhand spares?

Gezzz man, YAMAHA RD... 2 stroke twin, came in 250 and 350cc IIRC the 1st of the Liquid Cooled (LC) 2 strokes, hence they were more cominly knowen as the LC rather than RD.
Any one that was a pimple faced teenager in the early eightys will remember them being reliced... 1st easy as to wheelie 250, a sound and style all of there own :scooter:

I believe that the LCs are still being made in Brazil or at least they were up until very recently.

They were what was known here as the RZ (called RD in most markets)

I thought the RZ had fairings, rather than the nakedness of the RD?

This place here looks to be the definitive website: http://www.rd350lc.net on all things RD/RZ.
They talk about the faired 350 here http://www.rd350lc.net/pageFAIRING.htm and I'm sure I do remember a fully faired RD350LC but it looked nothing like those one's at the bottom of the page. Buggered if I know, looks like I'll have to surrender to old age and say that it was too long ago for me to be sure now.

In NZ the bike started as a RD... (no fairings no YPVS) then came the RZ (remained RD over seas) which came with a small fairing and belly pan.
The last of the RZ's (RD's elswere) was the RR with full fairing and proper expansion chambers.
