Could someone please tell me what the fk that very loud bang and boom was, and why the emergency services are headed toward the airport?
Fingers crossed all's well.
One fk of a loud noise.
Ooops - police are here. Later!
Update: Radio reports a possible 'Sonic Boom' from an aircraft. Police are investigating. WTF kinda aircraft fly over a city in NZ faster than the speed of sound?

We had a little excitement at work today... a big Bang - sounded like somthing heaving falling on our roof and rolling away down it. Heard from someone in the office report that it was heard in sumner. So being in the business of radio communications we switched on the radio and listened in on the police channel.
So far its been reported as being heard in Blenhiem, so defiently not local event, and then they reported that all aircarft were accounted for (no Sept 11 repeat). The Police recon it was the Space shuttle re-entering the atmosphere.
Anyone else hear it?

to make a boom loud enough to be heard as you guys describe, it's have to be something moving at over mach 2, as the sound wave compression at mach 1 to 2, although dense, unless coming from a very large mass, wouldn't cause the amount of noise that you have described.
the only aircraft capable of mach 1 in nz is the Hunter, and that's only in a dive.
an small asteroid or piece of space junk, travelling at 20 - 30 times the SOS though would certainly make a bang

It's probably an old decomissioned Sky satelite or something. We'd better get used to it though coz we'll soon be passing through that part of the Galaxy where all the big Meteors live. Last time this solar system went through that neighbourhood the dinosaurs got wiped out - Global warming and terrorism are gonna become really tiny issues people.
