A few nights ago I couldnt sleep so I put the TV on and was plesently surprised to see some bike racing on. I was again surprised to see it was the malaysian round of the GP125cc class, which you dont see much of on NZ TV.
I havent really seen much 125cc racing... and far out have I been missing out! Those little screamers produced some of the BEST racing I have seen in a long time.. two or four wheels
Quick question... what kind of hp are those little bad boys putting out, I can only assume it would be in the 40-45hp range but I would love to be blown away. Also they must be down to bout 80-90kg or something silly wouldnt they?
If anyone knows of a good website to follow the season please let me know...

I saw a GP125 race before seeing any MC racing and thought they were just awesome...better than F1 for sure. Wait till you watch a motoGP race like the Italian GP race. Fark that was just brilliant.
www.motogp.com has 125 stuff I think.

I know that the 125 class has a minimum of 80kg's and single cylinder as part of the rules.

You sure about that? The published dry weight of a 2001 RS125 is 72kg. I havent weighed mine but I'd be surprised if its over 80. I don't think there is a weight limit for 125's.
My one puts out in the 40hp range, maybe 42 if i am lucky. I'd say the world gp ones would be touching 50hp. Their weight would also be alot lighter than my one, i'd say at the max they'd be 70kg. None of the riders are over 50kg either.

they sure do go like stink!!! The 250GP bikes in NZ can run mid-field in F2 with modern 600's... gotta love that power to weight ratio!

Well I did a search earlier and this is what I found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MotoGP#125cc_and_250cc_Classes
It may not be true though as you say.
Also check this pdf file out too

My old 1989 was about 70kgs and pushing out that 40hp (courtesy of a 2003-spec engine).
But yes those riders are tiny alright !!

Thanks guys, gives me some insight. They must be a hoot to ride...
Its awesome how little care the tiny riders seem to have for themselves, their bikes and each other!
GP125 bike: 70kg, 45hp = 1.55 kg/hp
McLaren F1: 1140kg, 627hp = 1.81kg/hp
GO THE TWO WHEELS!!!

From here: http://www.fim.ch/en/default.asp?item=26#
Weights
2.5.1 The following are the minimum weights permitted :
– 125cc motorcycle + rider 136 kg
So yeah you're probably right, most riders would be around the 50kg mark + 5 or so kg of gear means bike weight around 80kg.

Honda have announced they will no longer be supplying 125's to any GP teams next year. The end is near...:bye:
However the power to weight figures for a RS125 arent really that impressive. Any 1000cc sportsbike like GSXR1000, R1, ZX10R are all cracking at at least 1hp per kg ie GSXR 165kg, 175hp! Now even allowing for the real world, if you had a weight of 200kg and 150hp at the rear wheel, youre still talking 1.33kg per hp, which is better than the 1.55 figure for the 125. How about a MotoGP 990cc monster? 250+ hp, 150kg :gob: 0.6kg per hp!!

Yeah the 250's are only about 20kg heavier than a 125 and have about double the hp. Figures i've seen are 90kg and 105hp give or take. Thats pretty impressive.

The 250's are quite a good bikeits abit of a shame they are going to kill these classes considering world 125's have 40 bikes starting the grid and produce the best racing

Tim 39
19th September 2006, 21:18
well eventually they will kill them off, two strokes are a thing of the past because they're not the clean green image people are after :( but I hope they can keep going a bit longer yet!!!!!, but motocross has already made the 4stroke change

Yes and no it depends on what oil you run in the RS I run Spectro PWC and always have anddoesnt smoke at all and a few 125gp teams are trying out valves in 2 strokes to try clean them down and before RG100!! rants on about I know nothing I do the 2 stroke Diesel ran a valve in it for the exhaust,
Now the 125s will die and it will be a shame but I can see there will be a class to replace them eg single poppa 4 stroke GP bikes but the thing is you wont be able to buy one probably
