Aight... checking out the options of getting my bike painted...
I've decided on Black... and was asked "which black?"
Um...
As far I know my options are:
Matt Black
Shiney Black
Black with sparkles (I dunno)
Are there any other blacks I've missed out?
And what do you think?
I personally am leaning towards Matt Black, I like the look, but i don't know if it will suit the ZXR and if other people will like it (for when I come to sell it to buy my 600).

There is no such colour as black - they are all very dark shades of blue, green, brown etc....could be what they mean.

Motu is right - purple/black, blue/black, geen/black..etc. I suggest you ask the painter for some colour samples and good luck making your choice!

'Blaaaack'
'It's a very nice black'
'Almost a 'Pastel' Black'.
Open credits - This is Spinal Tap - DVD Edition.
I like the look but find Matt looks shabby easy unless very meticulously maintained - and then you end up with a partially polished bike if you are meticulous.
Gloss is easy for a wash and a wipe to look spruce.

My CBR back in SA was black with a mother of pearl touch, in some lights is was black/purple... other black/greenish...or black/blue it was a stunning bike. I loved it and I received a lot of compliments about the pain work.

If you have everything painted at the same time - black is black and you won't notice - motus point is only important when repainting damged panels eg.
If it's the whole bike ......I want my baby back, grey is grey, since the day...

Yeah its going to be the whole bike... All the fairings and Tank... not the rims...
At the moment the top/front fairing looks matt black (thanks to a dry spray paint look), and I think it looks nice... but I'm more concerned about "Sale" value for when I upgrade...

what about a combo of matt and gloss

I tried Matt Black for about a month - made the bike look really ratty - even when clean. After I was sick of Matt Black I put Decals on it and put lacquer over the matt to get a deep gloss effect. I prefer the gloss. (shiny black)

I like matt black with a copper metalic flake.

yeah, you really want a sheen with the back on a zxr.
An mv or somethign would get away with a matt black, but the bike needs to have something else really spectacular to pull off the 'industrial' matt black look...

Blacker than a black thing. So black that even the white bits were black.

For resale value I would go for a gloss with maybe a pearl added as I think a matt would look tatty pretty quick.

The SR-71 Blackbird aircraft is painted black.
But it isn't. It is "high emissivity blue" which is indistinguishable from black by the naked eye...
Just thought you should know this....
OK. Going back to my corner now.

Whatever you do, don't go for matt black as it looks revolting, like it is waiting for the top coat! My Goose is a great colour - looks plain (but shiny!) black from a distance but when you get it in the sun it is metallic and can sometimes look almost dark blue. Very purdy!
Speaking of bike paint jobs, I still have two favourites - the gang member's Triumph painted metallic pink and that gorgeous tangerine colour Triumph had a few years ago - just gorjus!

Matt black - the chrome can be the shiny bits. Chrome shines brighter against matt black.

16th September 2006, 16:03
if you want matt black, put some accents on it, at a minimum some shiney black patterns or stickers up the tank and stuff..
Otherwise it looks like it has been binned too many times.

I like the shiney look. With sparkles I dunno, sounds like evening wear.
Or that mother of peal someone mentioned sounds like good compromise

Thanks all for the suggestions... I did a lot of looking around this weekend, at different blacks in bike mags and spoke to a few more people...
I'm just waiting back on a quote or two... If the price comes back right I may just be getting it done black (shiney... some sort) and blue. If that comes back as too expensive or no-can-do then it'll be a shiney black of some sort... I like the sound of the "Pearl" black, so again we'll see :)
Thanks again :)

by all accounts matt black, whilst looking cool, is a bitch to put on, keep clean and it wears real badly, 'cus you can't lacquor it to protect the paint

SOmething that i looked at for my bike, is matt black frame with gloss black bike and *maybe* a few white decals. The matt black frame looks really good, i just did one in the garage and it acutally looked really good. (use a good paint though)
Add to that a tinted windscreen and it will look sexy.

I won't be doing the paintjob myself, i wouldn't know where to start, and because i'm paying to get it done, getting the frame done would cost extra because they would have to remove the enigine and stuff right?
I love that idea, but its not in my budget at the moment :)

My last bike was black, but had a charcoal frame and wheels. Looked surprisingly good, and split up the black on the body work and engine rather well.
I think the only chrome was on the fork stanchions, pipe, and footrest heel plates.
The black was gloss with metallic blue/purple specks (Suzuki).

Well the rims are staying the colour they are... which is a dark grey/black-ish type colour. See the pic in my profile... those are the rims, so thats the colour...

I had a Harley that was black with a magenta pearl. It looked blacker than black except in certain lights... kinda gave the paint more depth.

I just spoke to the mechanic, and he reckons the bike won't be ready for another 3 weeks (I was hoping to have it back this weekend :() I asked him about the guy he was sourcing to do the paintjob... and he said approx $700 for one colour, and it doesn't include the rims.
If I decide to get the paint job through him I won't have the bike back for another 4-5 weeks.
*is tired of waiting... its been over 10 months now*
Anyway... yeah.
I'm leaning towards the shiney black.

PF, go and find a black Subaru legacy or wrx and have a close look (on a sunny day helps). Some are an incredibly deep metallic red (but look black)
